Introduction: Although, several factors have been identified as significant determinants in online learning, the human interactions with those factors and their effect on academic achievement are not fully elucidated. This study aims to determine the effect of self-regulated learning (SRL) on achievement in online learning through exploring the relations and interaction of the conception of learning, online discussion, and the e-learning experience. Methods: A non-probability convenience sample of 128 learners in the Health Professions Education program through online learning filled-out three self-reported questionnaires to assess SRL strategies, the conception of learning, the quality of e-Learning experience and online discussion. A scoring rubric was used to assess the online discussion contributions. A path analysis model was developed to examine the effect of self-regulated learning on achievement in online learning through exploring the relations and interaction among the other factors. Results: Path analysis showed that SRL has a statistically significant relationship with the quality of e-learning experience, and the conception of learning. On the other hand, there was no correlation with academic achievement and online discussion. However, academic achievement did show a correlation with online discussion. Conclusion: The study showed a dynamic interaction between the students’ beliefs and the surrounding environment that can significantly and directly affect their behaviour in online learning. Moreover, online discussion is an essential activity in online learning.

Objectives: To determine the relationships between the use of self-regulated learning strategies and academic achievement among Vietnamese medical students. Methods: An accelerated prospective cohort study among 623 students at a public medical university, Vietnam was conducted during the academic year 2012-2013. Fourteen self-regulated learning subscales including intrinsic/extrinsic goal orientation, task values, self-efficacy for learning, control of learning beliefs, rehearsal, elaboration, organization, critical thinking, meta-cognitive strategies, time and study environment, effort regulation, peer learning, and help seeking were measured using the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. The Grade Point Average was recorded through two consecutive semesters of the academic year 2012-2013. Data were collected at two points in time (once each semester). Generalized Estimating Equation was applied to explore any relationships between the use of self-regulated learning subscales and Grade Point Average, adjusting for the effects of within cluster correlation, National Medical Admission Test scores, and times of measurement, depression, anxiety, stress, and demographic covariates. Results: Results from multivariate analysis revealed that extrinsic goal orientation, time and study environment, and effort regulation were found to be significantly positively associated with Grade Point Average (mean difference: 0.932; 95%CI: 0.344 to 1.528). Conclusions: The use of self-regulated learning strategies can be helpful for improving of academic achievement among Vietnamese medical students. Challenges students face in the online component of blended learning, especially in the areas related to self-regulation challenges, have deferred them in achieving their learning goals. Besides, improper utilization of online peer learning strategy has also been identified as an inherent problem related to self-regulation challenges in the blended learning environment. Therefore, this study adopted Zimmerman's perspective of SRL which draws from social cognitive theory and Bandura's self-efficacy theory to determine the influence of self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies and peer learning on students' learning satisfaction and academic achievement. This study proposes an integrated and actionable framework covering a variety of constructs, including SRL, peer learning, learning satisfaction, and academic achievement in the context of blended learning. In addition, it also provides insights for universities as to where future efforts need to be directed, especially in the areas related to the improvement of the facilities and infrastructure for blended learning implementation.

The ability for students to self-regulate their learning and to learn effectively with peers become two distinctive competencies in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution. These competencies also affect academic achievement, an important variable used to measure attainment of learning outcomes. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the influence of peer learning and self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies on students’ academic achievement. Of the 409 respondents, only 347 were valid for data analysis, forming a usable case of 84.84%. The instruments used was an online questionnaire, which was adapted from pre-existing reliable multi-item instruments. Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis was used to examine the relationship between the constructs in the hypothesised model. Given that the structural model exhibited a good fit to the data (χ2/df = 1.697; CFI = 0.916; IFI = 0.917; TFI = 0.912; and RMSEA = 0.045), the results unveiled that students’ ability to learn with peers were found to have a positive and significant effect on academic achievement (β = 0.478, C.R. = 3.628, p = 0.000), and significantly influenced students’ SRL strategies (β = 0.793; C.R. = 6.991; p = 0.000). This study also discusses the practical implications to facilitate the development of students’ self-regulated learning (SRL) and peer learning competencies in blended learning courses.

Abstract Introduction Recent conceptualizations of self-regulated learning acknowledge the importance of co-regulation, i.e., students’ interactions with others in their networks to support self-regulation. Using a social network approach, the aim of this study is to explore relationships between characteristics of medical students’ co-regulatory networks, perceived learning opportunities, and self-regulated learning. Methods The authors surveyed 403 undergraduate medical students during their clinical clerkships (response rate 65.5%). Using multiple regression analysis, structural equation modelling techniques, and analysis of variance, the authors explored relationships between co-regulatory network characteristics (network size, network diversity, and interaction frequency), students’ perceptions of learning opportunities in the workplace setting, and self-reported self-regulated learning. Results Across all clerkships, data showed positive relationships between tie strength and self-regulated learning (β = 0.095, p < 0.05) and between network size and tie strength (β = 0.530, p < 0.001), and a negative relationship between network diversity and tie strength (β = −0.474, p < 0.001). Students’ perceptions of learning opportunities showed positive relationships with both self-regulated learning (β = 0.295, p < 0.001) and co-regulatory network size (β = 0.134, p < 0.01). Characteristics of clerkship contexts influenced both co-regulatory network characteristics (size and tie strength) and relationships between network characteristics, self-regulated learning, and students’ perceptions of learning opportunities. Discussion The present study reinforces the importance of co-regulatory networks for medical students’ self-regulated learning during clinical clerkships. Findings imply that supporting development of strong networks aimed at frequent co-regulatory interactions may enhance medical students’ self-regulated learning in challenging clinical learning environments. Social network approaches offer promising ways of further understanding and conceptualising self- and co-regulated learning in clinical workplaces.
