Purpose. To evaluate the role of microperimetry and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the morphofunctional analysis of the retina after surgical treatment of idiopathic macular holes (IMH). Materials and methods. A retrospective study of 33 patient's treatment results (33 eyes) with IMH was carried out. All patients underwent minimally invasive with 25G or 27G vitrectomy. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), macular photosensitivity, fixation stability, macular neuroepithelial (NE) volume and minimal macular hole diameter were analyzed. Follow-up period: 6 months. Results. A complete closure of the macular hole was achieved in all cases post-op. The patients had reliable improvement of BCVA, retinal photosensitivity and decrease of macular NE volume. Based on a multifactor correlation analysis with the purpose to predict the results of surgical treatment, the dependence of post-op BCVA on the pre-op photosensitivity of the retina and the minimal diameter of the macular hole was revealed. Conclusions. Microperimetry and OCT are modern non-invasive research methods allowing to estimate anatomical and functional results of surgical IMH treatment. The study of retinal photosensitivity in the macula and minimal macular hole diameter pre-op allows to predict post-op BCVA, which has a practical importance. The evaluation of the state of choroid in the patients presenting with uveitis is one of the promising directions in modern ophthalmological diagnostics because it provides the opportunity for obtaining the objective quantitative characteristics of the activity of the inflammatory process and thereby makes it possible to more accurately estimate the effectiveness of the treatment. It has been shown that the thickness of choroid considerably increases during the acute phase of Vogt-Koyanangi-Harada disease, active uveitis associated with Behcet’s disease, sarcoidosis, and toxoplasmosis and returns to the normal value under the influence of the treatment. In certain cases, the thickness of choroid decreases in comparison with that in the healthy eyes. The thinning of choroid was documented also at the stage of the clinical remission of birdshot retinochoroidopathy, Fuchs syndrome-associated uveitis, posterior non-infectious and idiopathic pan-uveites. It can possibly be the result of the atrophy of choroid due to the inflammatory and ischemic processes. Unfortunately, the available literature data have been obtained in disconnected studies of the choroid of the patients suffering from uveitis that involved only the small number of the patients and were confined to a few selected etiological and pathogenetic structural variants of this condition.

The paper presents the results of a study of the female urethra in cases of urethral pain syndrome (UPS) and inflammatory diseases of the lower urinary tract using cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP OCT). Urethral wall structure was studied in 86 patients; 233 CP OCT images were collected. A comparative qualitative analysis of three groups of CP OCT images — “norm”, “Inflammation” and “UPS” — identified that despite the absence of a clear inflammatory factor in the patient’s examination, the urethral tissues in UPS were in an altered state. The changes in the urethral wall with UPS and in cases of inflammation were similar. Using a point scale, three experts independently performed visual scoring of the CP OCT images. Three parameters: epithelial contrast, cavities and the minimum signal depth in the co-channel were evaluated. It was found that, individually, the parameters correlate only weakly with the diagnosis. Area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was from 0.51 to 0.78. The joint use of a number of visual signs has a greater diagnostic value than the use of the criteria individually. Area under the ROC curve using the developed cumulative criterion reached up to 0.87–0.89. This study could form the basis of a scoring system for assessing the state of the urethral tract using CP OCT images in real time. The CP OCT method provides information on the state of urethral tissues that cannot be obtained with traditional cystoscopy.
