The purpose of this article is to present the results of a pilot study in which the new instrument was developed and tested to measure the formation of entrepreneurial intentions in multi-country context. The developed instrument was largely based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen (1991). In the pilot study, the authors were also paying attention to two issues, namely (i) whether the level of entrepreneurial intentions varies as a function of country of origin, (ii) whether the relative importance of the three antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions varies as a function of country of origin, and (iii) whether the background variables exercise similar effects on the formation of entrepreneurial intentions in different countries. The empirical context of the pilot study is made of two higher education institutions (one in Finland, one in Spain) and concerns their first-year students at undergraduate programs. In the end of this paper, the authors will discuss the implications of the empirical observations of their pilot study.

This article reports on a pilot study, conducted by the Visually Impaired Infants Research Consortium, of 21 developmental milestones achieved by 82 visually impaired children in New York City. Some delays in visual-motor activities were found, as well as differences in the sequence of acquiring skills. The subgroup of visually impaired children with multiple handicaps acquired milestones at a slower rate than did the subgroup of visually impaired children with no additional handicapping conditions.

All students, but especially freshmen, must understand their personal characteristics (interests, abilities, and values), learn the characteristics of academic programs, and use this information to develop their educational plans. In addition, they must learn about academic rules, procedures, and deadlines. We describe the development, implementation, and assessment of a systematic academic-advising program, The DUS Navigator, for exploratory freshmen. After a 1-semester pilot study, the program was delivered and assessed through five iterations. The results indicate that the program helps exploratory students take an active and productive role with advisors to make informed decisions about their educational plans.

This paper reports on a pilot study of theassessment of CEAB (Canadian EngineeringAccreditation Board) graduate attribute 3.1.12 “life-longlearning” in a first year design course. We proposeequating life-long learning with self-directed learning, and use the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale(SDLRS) developed by Guglielmino. The results of oursurvey show our first year students’ readiness for selfdirectedlearning is very consistent with the adult averagereported by Guglielmino and that the SDLRS instrumentappears to be a good choice for the assessment of lifelonglearning.

The pilot study described in this paper builds on existing studies of lexical diversity to determine the extent to which learners’ L2 vocabulary proficiency affects the lexical diversity of the texts they produce across three modes of production. To do this, the researcher examined the relationship between first-year students’ (n = 17) L2 vocabulary knowledge, as measured by Webb, Sasao, and Ballance’s (2017) updated Vocabulary Levels Test (uVLT), and the lexical diversity of their academic writing, academic presentations, and academic discussions. The results showed that even learners with higher scores on the uVLT tended not to use those low-frequency words in their academic writing and presentations. As a result, there was no statistically significant correlation between students’ uVLT scores and the lexical diversity of their essays or presentations. However, the analysis did show a statistically significant correlation between vocabulary knowledge and the lexical diversity of their academic discussions.

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate (1) students’ interest in reading English books, (2) students’ interest in using an online Virtual Library (VL), and (3) students’ experiences and preferences relating to the implementation of an online VL within an Academic English Program (AEP). First-year students (N=136) from a public university in southwest Japan participated in this study. The preliminary results provide a deeper understanding of student interest, experiences, and preferences relating to the implementation of a VL within an AEP.

Purpose Dog-assisted interventions (DAIs) are conducted by universities around the world as innovative methods that improve students’ quality of life. The purpose of this paper is to assess the DAI program’s effect on the stress levels, well-being and social skills of first-year students from different degree programs at Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). Design/methodology/approach The study was conducted with 64 first-year students (M=19.20, SD=1.57). The intervention consisted of three weekly sessions of 1-h duration interacting with a therapy dog. The investigation followed a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design with measures of attitudes toward DAI, perceived stress, well-being and social skills. Findings The results indicated significant improvements in all studied variables. Research limitations/implications This study presents some limitations. In the design, the authors lack a control group. Another limitation is related to the sample, which was small. The authors also acknowledge that only one measure of each outcome variable was administered. Likewise, during the interventions, external observations should be added that generate qualitative records focused on student–dog interactions. In addition, physiological measures of stress, such as cortisol levels, should be included in the analysis to further support the obtained results. Nevertheless, as this was a pilot study, future investigations should aim to create a program using a larger sample of both participants as well as and dogs, with a linear/longitudinal design to measure both the mid- and long-term effects. Practical implications In addition, this pilot study was implemented to assist in the validation and adjustment of the DAI program for UCM students. Social implications By using a DAI program, college students have had the opportunity to reduce their stress and develop their social skills, as well as improve their quality of life as individuals and students. Although the implementation of Compludog was small, it was also promising as a pedagogical practice at UCM. Originality/value It was applied for the first time in a Spanish university and provided access to therapy dogs within this context.
