ABSTRACT

The objectives of this research was to study the fruit production and quality of strawberry grown under different irrigation system. The trial was arranged in a completely randomized design. Four irrigation systems were examined: drip irrigation applied daily, drip irrigation applied every 2 days, manual irrigation applied daily and manual irrigation applied every 2 days . The result showed that the treatments gave significant effects on vegetative growth. Plants irrigated daily produced more runn er than those irrigated every 2 days. Plants irrigated manually every 2 days lowered flower production. The drip irrigation applied daily gave the highest response on growth and yield without any difference on fruit quality. The system could be considered for hydroponic
strawberry production.

Key words: strawberry, irrigation, fruit production, fruit quality

Huanglongbing (HLB) is one of the most devastating diseases of citrus, which is associated with Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (Las) in the United States. To date, no effective antimicrobial compound is commercially available to control the disease. In this study, we investigated the effects of different antimicrobial chemicals with suitable surfactants on HLB-affected matured citrus trees with emphasis on the fruit yield and quality. Each treatment was applied three times in a 2-week interval during the spring flush period, one time in summer and three times during the autumn flushing period. We extensively examined different parameters such as pathogenic index, disease index, tree canopy, fruit yield, quality, and nutritional status. The results showed that among the treatments, penicillin (PEN) with surfactant was most effective in suppressing Las titer in infected citrus trees, followed by Fosetyl-Al (ALI), Carvacrol (CARV), and Validamycin (VA). Fruit quality analysis revealed that PEN treatment increased the soluble solids content (SSC), whereas Oxytetracycline (OXY) treatment significantly reduced titratable acidity (TA) level and increased the SSC/TA ratio compared to the control. Nutrient analysis showed increased N and Zn levels in ALI and PEN treatments, and OXY treatment increased leaf P, K, S, and Mg levels compared to untreated control. Furthermore, B, Ca, Cu, Fe, and Mn in leaves were reduced in all chemical treatments than that of the untreated control. These findings revealed that some of the chemical treatments were able to suppress Las pathogen, enhance nutritional status in leaves, and improve tree growth and fruit quality of HLB-affected trees.

The present investigation on “Soil characterization, leaf nutritional status and fruit quality of Acid Lime orchards in Patur block of Akola district” was undertaken during the year 2018-19. Twenty healthy lime orchards were selected on the basis of their yield performance and visual observations from five locations of Patur block viz., Wadegaon, Sasti, Patur, Mazod and Goregaon. The study was framed to evaluate the soil characteristics, leaf nutritional status and fruit quality of Acid Lime. Twenty soil samples were collected from 0-30 and 30-60 cm depth in randomly selected acid lime orchards. Similarly, the leaf and fruit samples were collected and analyzed for quality parameters. The results indicated that, the soil reaction was neutral to slightly alkaline with pH value varied from 7.35 to 8.14, EC ranges from 0.23 to 0.32 dS m-1 indicating the non-saline nature of these soils. Free calcium carbonate varied from 5.63 to 9.42%, Organic carbon showed decreasing trend with soil depth and having medium to moderately high in organic carbon. The available nitrogen was found to be low to medium, phosphorus was low, potassium was high to very high and sulphur was low to moderate. The DTPA extractable micronutrients in soil were moderately high in zinc, iron, copper and manganese. The leaf nutrient status was found to be low to optimum in total nitrogen, phosphorus and micronutrient and optimum to high in potassium. Fruits of acid lime were found to be of good quality. Since, the correlations obtained in the present studies did not show any consistent trend.

Abstract Background Antioxidants or vitamins are organic compounds that are needed in tiny quantities and have stimulatory role on growth and productivity of different plants. Two field experiments were conducted in two summer seasons to investigate the role of two irrigation systems (spraying and dripping) and α-tocopherol foliar treatment with different concentrations (0, 100 and 200 mg/L) on some growth indices and physiological aspects, yield and its components of sweet corn plants. Results The results show that dripping irrigation system was more effective than Sprinkler system on increasing the studied growth indices and biochemical attributes as well as yield quantity and quality. The results also show the enhancing effect of different α-tocopherol treatments on growth indices, and yield quantity and quality of the sweet corn varieties via enhancing photosynthetic pigments, indole acetic acid, phenolics, carbohydrates constituents, free amino acids and proline contents. Moreover, the interaction between the two irrigation systems and different concentrations α-tocopherol showed that, dripping irrigation with 200 mg/L α-tocopherol was the most effective treatment on increasing growth, yield and yield components of sweet corn plants. Conclusion It could be concluded that dripping irrigation system was more effective than Sprinkler system on increasing the studied growth indices and physiological aspects, yield and its constituents. Moreover, treatment of maize plant with α-tocopherol could improve the studied growth indices, physiological aspects and consequently yield.
