The suggestion has been put forward that the oligodynamic action of certain heavy metals is the result of the destruction or inactivation of substances essential for cellular respiration. In a study of the effect of copper sulphate solutions on the oxygen consumption of Polycelis nigra it is found that solutions of concentration 0.001-0.01 N, fatal in 2 hr. or less, induce a marked preliminary rise in the respiration rate; this appears to be due to the inhibition of ciliary locomation and increased muscular activity. A similar increase is produced by increasing the activity of the animals by mechanical means, or by a muscle stimulant (barium chloride). Over the latter part of the survival time the respiration rate drops rapidly and disintegration of the animals begins when it falls to about 60% of the normal value. A 0.0004 N copper sulphate solutions does not inhibit ciliary locomotion, does not stimulate muscular activity, and the oxygen consumption undergoes a stedy decline. A 0.0002 N NaCN solution rapidly depresses the respiration rate to less than 20% of the normal value, but is not fatal, the animals surviving over 4 days. Hydrogen ions, at the concentrations resulting from the hydrolysis of the salt, have no appreciable effect on the oxygen consumption, but at lethal concentrations (pH 2.6, 2.8) effect a speedy depression. The results suggest that the depression of respiration rate observed is insufficient to account for the death of the animals, and is no more than a symptom of the toxic process. A similar general result was obtained in experiments with silver nitrate and mercuric chloride, and also in experiments on the comparative effect of copper sulphate and sodium cyanide solutions on the oxygen consumption of Gammarus pulex.

The main aim of this study was to screen the selected fruit peel extracts and their polyherbal mixture (PHM) for hepatoprotective activity. Male wistar albino rats (180-200 g), divided into 12 groups after induction of hepatotoxicity, were treated with selected fruit peel extracts and PHM and at the end of 14th day blood and liver samples were collected and analysed. The aqueous peel extract of Malus pumila was a better hepatoprotective among the selected peel extracts. The activities might be due to the conditioning of hepatocytes by protecting the integrity of the membrane from CCl4 induced leakage of serum markers into circulation. All the selected plant extracts and PHM were shown to revert back the liver enzymes to the normal values in diseased rats in a dose dependent manner. In conclusion, the selected fruit peel extracts and poly herbal mixture can be a potent hepatoprotective agent due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions.

Objective: The objective of this study is to assess the activity of Ulva lactuca polyphenols fraction in protecting the myocardial infarction induced by a high dose of isoproterenol. Methods: This study was carried out using Wistar albino rats divided into six groups. Group 1 was the normal group. Groups 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 received isoproterenol (85 mg/kg) i.p. twice at an interval of 24 h on the 14th and 15th day. In addition to isoproterenol, Group 3 received verapamil (5 μmol/kg) as a single dose intravenously on the 14th day 10 min before isoproterenol and Groups 4, 5, and 6 received U. lactuca polyphenols fraction at the doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, respectively, for 14 days. On the 16th day, serum and heart samples were harvested from the animals and the cardioprotective and antioxidant activities were assessed by studying the levels of cardiac functional heart marker enzymes, lipid profile, reduced glutathione, and antioxidant enzymes. Results: U. lactuca polyphenols fraction, at the tested doses, restored the levels of all serum markers and enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, cholesterol, triglycerides, and reduced glutathione) and heart homogenate antioxidant markers (reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) significantly, in dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: This study suggests that U. lactuca polyphenols fraction has a cardioprotective effect against isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction and possess antioxidant activities.

Summary• The actions of dilutions and potencies of copper sulphate on the growth of Chlorella were studied in order to determine whether a potency of copper sulphate was beneficial to a culture of Chlorella which had been poisoned by copper sulphate.• The growth rate of Chlorella in Chu 10 culture medium was greatly reduced by a concentration of copper sulphate of 10−5 Molar (M). Algae grown in Moyse culture medium, which contain 3·2×10−7 M copper sulphate, were less sensitive to copper sulphate. Chlorella whose growth had been inhibited by copper sulphate was, when resuspended in fresh culture medium, more sensitive to further added copper sulphate than normal algae.• Potencies of copper sulphate prepared in the laboratory, in the concentration range 4c (4×10−8 M) to 15c had no effect on the growth of either normal or poisoned algae.• Several batches of a 15c potency prepared by A. Nelson & Co., Ltd. increased the rate of growth of both unpoisoned and poisoned algae. These results are attributed to the fact that the batches of potency contained a general growth stimulant, rather than to a stimulatory homœopathic action of the potency itself which would have affected the poisoned algae only.
