Abstract Pharmaceutical substances such as propranolol (PRO) are an emerging class of aquatic contaminants that have increasingly been detected in ground and surface water. For this reason, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of advanced oxidation systems for the PRO degradation. The tests started with anodic oxidation (AO), using 0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 M Na2SO4 as the supporting electrolyte and 16, 32, 48, and 64 mA cm−2 as current density. Under the best conditions obtained in AO, the electro-Fenton (EF) process was reviewed, where the effect of Fe2+ was analyzed with 5, 10, 15, and 20 mg Fe2+ L−1. The Fenton reaction (FR) was studied using the Fe2+ concentration that promoted the highest percentage of PRO removal and initial concentration of 16 mg L−1 of H2O2, in addition to these conditions, in the photo-Fenton (PF) system, the effect of UV light with wavelengths 254 and 365 nm were evaluated. The results obtained showed that the degradation efficiency of the EF > AO > PF > FR system along with a percent removal of 94.52, 90.4, 25.97, and 4.4%, respectively. The results showed that PRO can be removed through the studied systems, with the EF system being the most efficient.

The removal of cationic Blue X-BL in aqueous solution by adsorption of silica gel was investigated. Effects of pH, initial concentration of dye solution and temperature on the adsorption of Cationic Blue X-BL onto silica gel were studied. When the initial concentration of the blue dye was 100 mg/dm3, silica gel is 0.6 g at pH 9.3 and at 303 K, adsorption reached equilibrium after 2 h with the final adsorption quantity 16.38 mg/g. Fenton reaction with UV light was applied in the regeneration operation of silica gel which can transmit most of the UV light. The concentration of Fe2+ and H2O2 was evaluated and when the concentration of Fe2+ and H2O2 were 0.05 mmol/dm3 and 0.132 mol/dm3, the first, second, third and forth regeneration efficiency were 84.68 %, 82.05 %, 65.26% and 50.73 %, respectively. In order to improve the regeneration capacity and silica gels reuse times, acid washing was introduced in the forth regeneration after Fenton reaction, which can enhance the regeneration efficiency to 92.19%.

The antioxidant activity of Polyrhachis vicina wine extract was investigated: The IC50 of scavenging effect on superoxide radical generated by Pyrogallol autoxidation was 0.37 mg/mL; the maximum scavenging rate was 81.4%. The IC50 of scavenging effect on hydroxyl free radical generated by Fenton reaction was 0.66 mg/mL; the maximum scavenging rate was 91.8%. The IC50 of DPPH· scavenging effect was 0.48 mg/mL; the maximum scavenging rate was 91.4%. The results indicated that Polyrhachis vicina wine extract showed activity both in scavenging free radicals and antioxidation.

The antiradical and hydroxyl free radical scavenging activities were estimated in twenty-five, aged red wines from different areas in Greece. The antiradical activity (AAR) was determined by means of the wellknown DPPH• method, and its values ranged from 24.7 to 125.1. A novel, chemiluminescence-based, highly sensitive assay was applied for determination of the hydroxyl free radical scavenging activity (SAHFR), which varied from 1.62 to 12.22 mM quercetin equivalents. The values from the two assays correlated very well (r2 =0.8542, P<0.001), which confirmed an important relationship between SAHFR and AAR. This tendency in aged red wines, which may be significant in evaluating the antioxidant behaviour of red wine polyphenols, is discussed on the basis of previous research and relevant data.

This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of samples extracted from Jinhua ham by using such chemical assays as DPPH, scavenging hydroxyl free radical and ABTS. The results demonstrate that antioxidant capacity of the extracted sample is lower than oxidation capacity of Vc. The IC50 spot of samples ranges between 0.6 % and 2.5 % (mass fraction of solute).
