PurposeThis paper attempts to identify the biases in decision-making of individual investors. The paper aims to develop and validate a higher-order behavioral biases scale.Design/methodology/approachScale development is done by identifying the relevant items of the scale through existing literature and then, adding new items for some biases. In phase 1, using a structured questionnaire, data was collected from 274 investors who invest in financial markets. The major dimensions of the scale have been pruned by using exploratory factor analysis administered on data collected in phase 1. Higher-order CFA is used to analyze the data and to validate the scale on another set of data (collected in phase 2) containing 576 investors.FindingsThe study reveals that the scale for measuring behavioral biases has many dimensions. It has two second-order factors and 13 zero-order constructs. Two second-order constructs have been modeled on the basis of cause of errors in investment decision-making, that is, biases caused due to cognition, biases caused due to emotions.Originality/valueBehavioral biases are yet to receive a due attention, especially, in the Indian context. The present research is focusing on providing an empirically tested scale to test the behavioral biases. Some of the biases, which have been analyzed using secondary data in previous studies, have been tested with the help of statements in this study.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of cinema education services in career decision-making skills to improve career decision-making skills in SMK Al-Ishlah students. The design of this study uses Single Subject Design (SSD) with multiple treatments and is supported by a repeated measure model. The subjects of this study were eight students of class X of SMK Al-Ishlah Palangka Raya who indicated as students behaving lack of career decision-making skills tended to be low, moderate, and high from the basics observation phase, intervention 1, intervention 2, and intervention 3. Analysis data uses visual analysis by paying attention to changes in levels and trends. The results of the study showed that the eight subjects in the baseline phase had a lack of behavioural career decision-making skills that tended to be low. In the intervention phase, 1 using education cinema to eight subjects experienced an increase in categories from low to moderate categories.

BackgroundDecisions about prenatal screening to assess the risk of genetic conditions such as Down syndrome are complex and should be well informed. Moreover, the number of available tests is increasing. Shared decision making (SDM) about testing could be facilitated by decision aids powered by mobile technology.ObjectiveIn this mixed methods study, we aim to (1) assess women’s needs and preferences regarding using an app for considering prenatal screening, (2) develop a decision model using the analytical hierarchy process, and (3) develop an analytical app and assess its usability and usefulness.MethodsIn phase 1, we will assess the needs of 90 pregnant women and their partners (if available). We will identify eligible participants in 3 clinical sites (a midwife-led birthing center, a family practice clinic, and an obstetrician-led hospital-based clinic) in Quebec City and Montreal, Canada. Using semistructured interviews, we will assess participants’ attitudes toward mobile apps for decision making about health, their current use of apps for health purposes, and their expectations of an app for prenatal testing decisions. Self-administered questionnaires will collect sociodemographic information, intentions to use an app for prenatal testing, and perceived importance of decision criteria. Qualitative data will be transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method. In phase 2, we will develop a decision model using the AHP whereby users can assign relative importance to criteria when deciding between options. We will validate the model with potential users and a multidisciplinary team of patients, family physicians, primary care researchers, decision sciences experts, engineers, and experts in SDM, genetics, and bioethics. In phase 3, we will develop a prototype of the app using the results of the first 2 phases, pilot test its usefulness and usability among a sample of 15 pregnant women and their partners (if available), and improve it through 3 iterations. Data will be collected with a self-administered questionnaire. Results will be analyzed using descriptive statistics.ResultsRecruitment for phase 1 will begin in 2019. We expect results to be available in 2021.ConclusionsThis study will result in a validated analytical app that will provide pregnant women and their partners with up-to-date information about prenatal screening options and their risks and benefits. It will help them clarify their values and enable them to weigh the options to make informed choices consistent with their preferences and values before meeting face-to-face with their health care professional. The app will be easy to update with the latest information and will provide women with a user-friendly experience using their smartphones or tablets. BACKGROUND Many women with HIV (WWH) have suboptimal adherence to oral antiretroviral therapy (ART) due to multilevel barriers to HIV care access and retention. A long-acting injectable (LAI) version of ART was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in January 2021 and has the potential to overcome many of these barriers by eliminating the need for daily pill-taking. However, it may not be optimal for all WWH. It is critical to develop tools that facilitate patient-provider shared decision making about oral versus LAI ART modalities to promote women’s adherence and long-term HIV outcomes. OBJECTIVE This study will develop and pilot test a web-based patient decision aid, called i.ART+support (iARTs). This decision aid aims to support shared decision-making between WWH and their providers, and help women choose between oral and LAI HIV treatment. METHODS The study will occur in three phases. In Phase 1, we will utilize a mixed-methods approach to collect data from WWH and medical and social service providers to inform i.ARTs content. During Phase 2, we will conduct focus groups with WWH and providers to refine i.ARTs content and develop the web-based decision aid. In Phase 3, i.ARTs will be tested in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with n=180 women in Miami, FL and assessed for feasibility, usability and acceptability, as well as to evaluate the associations between receiving i.ARTs and viral suppression, ART refills, and clinic attendance. RESULTS Phase 1 participant recruitment began in September 2021. CONCLUSIONS This study is the first to develop a web-based patient decision aid to support WWH choices between oral and LAI ART. Its strengths include the incorporation of both patient and provider perspectives, a mixed-methods design, and implementation in a real-world clinical setting. CLINICALTRIAL We will apply for Clinicaltrials.gov registration prior to Phase 3 when we enroll our first participant in the RCT. This is anticipated to occur in April 2023.

In Chapter 7, David Reader observes that the introduction of the Enterprise Act 2002 formally ended a much maligned public interest approach to merger control in the UK, oft-criticized for the uncertainty permeated by ministerial decision-making. In its place came a new competition-based test to be applied by independent competition authorities with new powers and resources at their disposal. Despite encountering some teething problems as the authorities sought to interpret their respective roles at Phases 1 and 2, the reforms have proven largely successful in delivering one of the most transparent and predictable merger regimes in the world. This chapter reflects on the evolution of UK merger control under the Enterprise Act, observing that a combination of major—and finer-tuning of the competition authority’s Phase 1 enforcement powers has enabled it to effectively deliver upon its mandate. New challenges lie in wait, however, and Reader stresses that the CMA must be allocated the resources and statutory remit to contend with the increased workload implications presented by Brexit and the novel theories of harm associated with mergers in the digital sector. Of further concern are recent reforms to extend the national security public interest ground, which risk a return to the ‘dark ages’ of opaque ministerial decision-making if further safeguards are not implemented.
