Purpose: An important cause of avoidable childhood blindness is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in countries with high human development index and also in some emerging economies countries. To date, no research have been conducted on analyzing data of ROP prevalence in Babol, and this is the first research performed on ROP in this area. Methods: All VLBW babies who referred to Babol ophthalmology center over the seven years, from February 2007 to December 2013 were enrolled in this descriptive cross-sectional research. A team of researchers recorded patients’ information completely in check lists. A single experienced ophthalmologist performed ophthalmologic examination of patients. Result: The incidence of ROP of any stage in Babol was determined to be 306 (45%) of all babies enrolled in this study. In present study, key risk factors of ROP were low gestational age, oxygen therapy more than five days and low birth weight. Conclusion: The findings of current study demonstrate that the main risk factors of developing ROP in newborns are multiple gestation, low birth weight, oxygen therapy for more than five day. Therefore, the progression of ROP to blindness will be prevented by a high index of suspicion, suitable screening, prompt diagnosis, and early treatment.

Abstract Background: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is defined as a vaso-proliferative retinal disorder that leads to childhood blindness; and persists as the main cause of preventable childhood blindness. The impact of ROP in developing countries is heavier as term infants can develop ROP because of inadequate awareness of the disease development and the risk factors. Hence, the aim of the study is assessing the prevalence and risk factors for retinopathy of prematurity in the specific study area.Methodology: An institutional based cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted on 301 samples of the pediatrics out-patient eye clinic medical records, at Minilik II referral hospital, from March to April 2020. Study subjects were selected using systematic random sampling method. Data was collected from medical records of all infants visiting the hospital for eye problems from January 2018 to December 2019, using a structured check list. The collected data was entered and cleaned using Epi data 6.4.2.0 and then exported & analyzed using SPSS version 25. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was computed to distinguish the statistically significant factors. Result: The prevalence of ROP among infants in this study showed 39(13%). Of these, more than half (56.4%) were Zone II + Stage 1, followed by Zone II + stage-2, and Stage-5; 12.8% and 10.2% respectively. Birth weight, oxygen therapy and sepsis were the factors significantly associated with ROP [AOR= 39.28; 95% CI: 3.204- 481.658], [AOR= 5.317; 95% CI:1.009- 28.019] and [AOR=9.805; 95% CI:1.592- 60.388] respectively. Conclusions: the prevalence of ROP in the current study is (13%). Birth weight, oxygen therapy and sepsis were the determinant risk factors for development of ROP. Regular ANC, and maternal education may be important to reduce the risk of low-birth weight, and sepsis that results in long-term oxygen therapy leading to childhood blindness.

Background: Retinopathy of prematurity is a multifactorial vasoproliferative retinal disease that increases in incidence with decreasing gestational age and is one of the leading causes of preventable childhood blindness in India. Advances in neonatology have led to dramatic increase in survival of preterm neonates and in turn, to the risk of developing ROP. Since most of the risk factors associated with ROP mentioned above arise in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) itself and most of them are avoidable, cautious monitoring of the risk factors, early screening, follow up and surgical intervention have been shown to reduce the incidence and improve the outcome of ROP.Methods: This was a prospective observational study conducted for a period of 2 years. A total of 151 infants admitted in NICU /SNCU who satisfied the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. Initial and follow up screening was conducted in three phases the results were documented in proforma after ethical clearance.Results: Comparison of risk factors between eyes with and without ROP was done using Chi-square test. A p-value of<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Incidence of ROP in centre is found to be 33.8%. Among maternal risk factors, multiple gestation and PROM/PPROM is found to be significant in the development of ROP from this study. However, mode of delivery and gestational hypertension, were found to be not significant in ROP. Among neonatal risk factors, low birth weight, lower gestational age, prolonged oxygen exposure, blood transfusion, mechanical ventilation, sepsis, phototherapy was found to be significant in this study.Conclusions: ROP, being an emerging cause for potentially blinding visual disability, needs to be diagnosed early. Due to the advancements in neonatology and better survival of preterm babies, timely screening, regular follow up, early detection and intervention is mandatory. A multidisciplinary approach is required in diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Proper counselling and motivation for parents of preterm and low birth weight babies for regular follow up is also essential.

Objectives: To find out Association with risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) of in-hospital newborns of low birth weight (LBW). Study Design: Cross sectional study. Setting: Department of Paediatrics, Civil Hospital Bahawalpur. Period: March 2017 to May 2018. Material and Methods: Sixty infants having birth weight 800 gram to 2500 gram, gestational age from 28 weeks to 40 weeks, either male or female were selected. Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) was assessed in selected patients. Results: Mean gestational age was 32.67 ± 3.8 weeks, mean weight was 1484.17 ± 532.9 gram and mean duration of hospital stay was 14.52 ± 6.6 days. ROP was noted in 20 (33%) patients. Grade I ROP was noted in 11 (55%) patients followed by grade II 7 (35%) and grade III in 2 (10%) patients. Very low birth weight (VLBW), longer duration of oxygen supplementation and male gender were found to be significantly associated (p value < 0.05) with ROP while other variables turned out to be insignificant. Conclusion: Association and risk factors of ROP in LBW infants is high and most of the cases were found with grade I ROP. ROP developed in all very premature infants. Significant association of ROP was noted with VLBW, prolonged duration of oxygen supplementation and male gender.

BACKGROUND Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is one of the leading causes of ocular morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Prematurity, low–birth, and oxygen therapy are considered to be the common risk factors. The maldeveloped retina in those affected are very much prone to develop refractive error, neo-vasculopathy, and neurosensory detachment. The purpose of our study was to find out the incidence and ascertain the risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity among the neonates attending the sick neonatal care unit and OPD of Calcutta National Medical College & Hospital. METHODS This is an institution based cross-sectional observational study conducted in the sick newborn care unit of a tertiary care hospital. Informed consent was obtained from the parents along with proper birth history. Indirect ophthalmoscopy with a + 20 dioptre (+ 20 D) lens with a paediatric scleral depressor was performed in each eye under the guidance of the neonatologist after pupillary dilatation. If either eye was found to have ROP, the baby was considered as an ROP case in the study and each eye was considered as a single case. RESULTS 50.27 % babies (N = 91) were delivered by Lower Uterine Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) and 55. 24 % babies were < 32 weeks of gestational age whereas 21.45 % (N = 39) babies were having < 1500 gm birth weight. Phototherapy was needed in 50 % of the babies (N = 92) whereas hyperbilirubinemia was present in 59.66 % of total babies. Bradycardia, apnoea, and sepsis were present in 29.83 % (N = 54), 25.41 % (N = 46), 41.98 % (N = 76) of the babies respectively. When compared in the two independent groups (ROP present and absent), low gestational age and low birth weight of the babies were found to be statistically significant (P < 0.05) for the development of ROP. After adjusting with different factors in the regression model we have found that low birth weight and oxygen therapy after birth were statistically significant with the development of ROP (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS ROP screening, specifically for those babies with low-birthweight, low gestational age, and those who received oxygen therapy for other systemic reasons, is mandatory to have an early diagnosis and treatment done. Background: Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is one of the most common causes of preventable blindness in children. Recent advances in the neonatology have increased preterm survival and so has the ROP incidence. Studies all over the world and across the country have shown a wide range for incidence of ROP and so it is difficult to gauge the exact incidence, especially in our region.Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in neonatal units of the Department of Paediatrics, Dr. S. N. Medical College, Jodhpur for a duration of six months. All newborns delivered in hospitals associated with Dr S. N. Medical College with gestation age at birth <34weeks and 34-36weeks associated with risk factors subjected to ROP screening by indirect ophthalmoscope by a trained ophthalmologist. Neonates with congenital cataract, hazy cornea, abnormal anterior chamber and those who expired or lost to follow up before sufficient examination could be done were excluded.Results: Out of 250 newborns screened, 34 (13.6%) were found positive for ROP and out of these 34, 18 (52.94%) had stage I, 11 (32.35%) had stage II, 5 (14.7%) had stage III and none for stage IV and V. Prolonged oxygen therapy, low birth weight, apnoea and sepsis were found to be significant risk factor (p<0.05) with the relative risk of 12.49, 3.71, 3.03 and 1.91 respectively.Conclusions: ROP is a preventable cause of blindness in children. Thus, its screening is indispensable and it has to be intensified in presence of risk factors such as prolonged oxygen therapy, low birth weight, apnoea and sepsis.

Background: purpose of this study was to determine prevalence of maternal and social risk factors of low birth weight. The purpose of this study is to prevalence of maternal and social risk factors of low birth weight.Methods: The cross-sectional and comparative study was carried out by reviewing medical records of newborn delivered for one year in 250 newborn. Birth weight was categorized into two as low birth weight (birth weight <2500 grams), considered as cases, and normal birth weight (birth weight ≥2500 grams), considered as controls or the reference birth weight.Results: In our study mother’s age, socioeconomic, educational status, occupation as significant variables to be associated with low birth weight. caesarean section increased significantly with decrease in gestational age and maternal weight, history of abortion, iron supplementation Hypertension, anemia, and DM are Predictors of maternal and obstetric with low birth weight.Conclusions: Prompt identification of causes and prevention of premature delivery, proper knowledge of signs and symptoms of pregnancy complications, and preventing any physical trauma or its potential causes are recommended during pregnancy to prevent low birth weight.

Background: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vaso-proliferative retinopathy which occurs mostly in premature babies. The pathological change in ROP is peripheral retinal neovascularisation which may regress completely or leave sequelae from mild myopia to bilateral total blindness. International classification of ROP helped in uniform documentation and staging of ROP. In India, the incidence of ROP is between 38 and 51.9 p.c among low-birth-weight infants. Aim & Objectives: To estimate the incidence of ROP among premature and / or low birth weight babies who were born and admitted to neonatal intensive care unit and attending neonatal follow-up clinic.Subjects and Methods:A hospital based, prospective analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in Department of Pediatrics at Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences, Teaching hospital and research center, Hyderabad, Telangana for a period of 6 months from 1st October 2018 to 31st March 2019. Prior to the study initiation, ethical clearance was obtained and written consent was taken from the parents of the respective babies. The study subjects included premature babies (less than or equal to 35 weeks of gestation) or low birth weight babies (less than or equal to 1500 grams). A predesigned, pre-tested, semi-structured proforma was used to collected the data. The data was collected, entered in Microsoft excel-2013 and analyzed using SPSS version-22 (trial). Data was presented in percentages, proportions and figures.Result:The ROP incidence in the study group was reported among 17.1 p.c of the study subjects.Conclusion:Low birth weight and prematurity are important risk factors for ROP.

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) is an important indicator of reproductive health and general health status of population. Objectives: The present study was aimed to estimate the prevalence of low birth weight (LBW), and to investigate the associations between some risk factors and LBW in Syrian refugee and Turkish population in Kilis, Turkey. Methods: The population of this study constituted of a total of 4379 infants born in Kilis State Hospital in 2016 using a retrospective cross-sectional study design. The data were collected from birth records. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 16.0. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify predictors of low birth weight. Factors with a p-value < 0.05 were deemed to be statistically significant. Results: The prevalence of LBW was 6.7% in all groups. Significant relationships were found between young maternal age, Syrian refugee mother, female infants, cesarean delivery and LBW. Conclusion: The prevalence of low birth weight in the study area was comparatively lower than that of countrywide figure. Maternal related variables like, maternal age, mother's nationality, and mode of birth (vaginal, cesarean) take after up as well as new-born related variables like gender of the neonate were significantly related with low birth weight.
