Crossing Borders, Writing Texts, Being Evaluated

2021 ◽

This book examines both writing norms and assessment, and proficiency development, and suggests that scholars need to critically examine testing regimes and develop research-based perspectives on tests and testing practices, so that educational institutions can prepare learners with differing cultural experiences for tests and assessments.

Chapter 2 discusses Nietzsche’s relationship to the Bildung tradition in German thought, a tradition running, in its heyday, from Weimar classicism through the German Romantics and beyond. The chapter investigates two texts primarily, Nietzsche’s “David Strauss” essay and his lectures “On the Future of Our Educational Institutions.” A key theme from the “David Strauss” essay, and elsewhere in the Untimely Meditations, is that true Bildung will not be a mere accumulation of cultural experiences, but rather will involve a kind of inner transformation. The chapter charts the way this ideal continues into Nietzsche’s later work as a model of self-shaping for individuals to undertake. Nietzsche, in “On the Future of Our Educational Institutions,” is pessimistic that such genuine Bildung is possible for most people.

Although research on migrant students and their education exists, there is a lack of knowledge in Finland about the experiences and perceptions of successful First-Generation Migrant Family Students (FGMFS) in their educational path and transition from school to higher education. Therefore, this study aims to identify the main factors by which these students can successfully shape their educational pathway. Fifteen FGMFS pursuing higher education in Finland were interviewed, and, with the help of Grounded Theory (GT), three main categories — Individualism and Collectivism, Gender Role, and Critical Thinking — were identified as significant in coping with cross-cultural challenges and continuing their study in higher education successfully. The results of this study can help educational institutions create empowering environments to enhance the learning of FGMFS.

Summary: The two main sources of errors in educational and psychological evaluation are the lack of adequate technical and psychometric characteristics of the tests, and especially the failure to properly implement the testing process. The main goal of the present research is to study the situation of test construction and test use in the Spanish-speaking (Spain and Latin American countries) and Portuguese-speaking (Portugal and Brazil) countries. The data were collected using a questionnaire constructed by the European Federation of Professional Psychologists Association (EFPPA) Task Force on Tests and Testing, under the direction of D. Bartram . In addition to the questionnaire, other ad hoc data were also gathered. Four main areas of psychological testing were investigated: Educational, Clinical, Forensic and Work. Key persons were identified in each country in order to provide reliable information. The main results are presented, and some measures that could be taken in order to improve the current testing practices in the countries surveyed are discussed. As most of the tests used in these countries were originally developed in other cultures, a problem that appears to be especially relevant is the translation and adaptation of tests.
