Solar-shading systems play various roles to the users of public buildings and may vary from user to user but some of the common user’s needs for these systems include; thermal comfort, energy-saving, daylight, and glare reduction. Understanding these needs can help Designers and Architects select from a wide array of Solar-Shading types and see which of them serves the needs of the users better. The Types of Solar-Shading Systems include either internal systems which are placed inside the building or can include external systems which are placed to the outside of buildings. To clearly understand the role Solar Shading Systems, play to satisfy Users’ needs, a case study of a Public Building in Nairobi, Kenya; Britam Towers, was selected. The case study found out that architects, designers, and developers play a preeminent role in coming up with projects that can better serve the User’s needs by creating designs that better suit the needs of the users have for using such Solar-Shading Systems. These designs may vary from building to building, region to region but the main withstanding factor to be noted is the functionality issue, as the Solar-Shading Systems should be able to meet the needs of users effectively and in turn, increase the user’s satisfaction.

The implementation of the mechanism of Energy Management Contract is of great significance in promoting the energy saving for buildings in China. Combining relevant contents in the Twelfth Five-year Plan of Shaanxi Province, this dissertation introduces the operating mode of the mechanism of EMC, analyses the main problems existing in the field of energy saving in large-scaled public buildings in Shaanxi Province, brings forward the innovative mode for developing market-oriented energy saving with Shaanxi Provincial characteristics based on EMC mechanism, and hopefully provides theoretical bases for the applications of EMC mechanism in the field of energy saving in large-scaled public buildings in our province.

This research aims to study the design and thermal insulation performance of detached houses in Taiwan through the analysis of 55 detached houses. The research shows that 85% of detached houses are built using reinforced concrete (RC) construction, and the rest mostly using lightweight steel framing (LSF) construction. The thermal insulation performance of envelope construction of RC housing is poorer than LSF housing. More than 80% of the case study sample could not meet the roof thermal insulation requirements of Taiwans latest regulations on housing building energy saving. The most commonly used thermal insulation materials are polystyrene board, glass wool and rock wool, which are nearly all applied in LSF housings for the internal thermal insulation layer or the structural body layer of envelope construction. Polystyrene board has the widest range of use, including both internal and external thermal insulation layers of the envelope construction. If improving thermal insulation performance of the common envelope construction concluded from case study samples to meet Taiwans latest regulations on housing building energy saving, of the savings on air-conditioning energy during the summer could potentially be 11.5%. However, above improvement project is not economically beneficial due to the too long payback period.

This paper responds to the article by Pietrapertosa et al., doi:10.3390/ijerph17124434, published previously in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. Its aim is to discuss the appropriateness of the studied method, to analyze its weak sides and to propose its robustness improvement. Thus, data presented in the above study were examined and recalculated, yielding, among others, indicators of annual energy savings (in kWh per m2 of total heated area) and specific proposals investment costs (in € per m2 of total heated area). By analyzing the obtained data for all public buildings, a significantly simplified approach to this problematic has been suggested while several other features of the research method and some presented results lack proper reasoning and discussion. Individual approach to each public building has been proposed and discussed point-by-point to enhance the method’s applicability. As a result, more realistic outcomes are obtained, and suitable investment actions can be proposed.

The example of energy effect integrated assessment for public building using the methods proposed by Russian Scientific and Technical Civil Engineers Organisation is presented. Comparative analysis of energy saving scopes for some public buildings with calculation of a recoupment for the specified cases using investments and operating costs discounting has been made.

Large-scale public buildings have high energy density, which take big part of the gross energy consumption in buildings in China. It is still in attempting stage about the strategy of energy conservation in air conditioning systems. The objective of this study is to investigate that how to appropriately divide central air conditioning system zoning by using simulation software to calculate the basis dynamic temperature and load in typical large-scale public buildings. Effects of weather conditions, building envelope conditions and building structure on large-scale public building energy consumption were analyzed in this simulation. The results show that the building load is the fundamental factor involved in air conditioning system zoning. Surplus heat recovery in inner zone is also recommended to maintain inner zone comfort and energy conservation. This work provides the theoretical and technological basis for study on central air conditioning system zoning and thermal comfort for large-scale public building.
