We report on experimental study of the photoconductive antennas (PCA)-emitters featuring conventional topology as well as metallic metasurface with plasmonic grating, based on the InGaAs/InAlAs superlattices. We measure and determine the photocurrents and the emission spectra of the PCAs, as well as the energy characteristics of the terahertz (THz) radiation, and the efficiency of the optical-to-THz conversion for different bias voltages and average laser excitation power. The integral THz emission power of 10 μW as well as conversion efficiency of 0.2% are demonstrated for the PCA with the metasurface, which are not reachable for the conventional due to thermal breakdown of the antenna. Therefore, the PCAs with the metasurface can be considered to be the attractive THz emitters that can potentially become among the elemental base for modern THz spectroscopic systems for biomedical applications.

ABSTRACTWe applied laser THz emission spectroscopy to study the effects of monolayer graphene on the THz emission from InAs. THz emission from graphene/InAs varies linearly with the laser excitation power in the low-intensity excitation regime. We found that unlike in graphene/SI-InP junctions, graphene and O2 adsorbates on graphene have no significant effect on the THz emission from graphene/InAs junctions because the THz radiation mechanism in InAs is by the photo-Dember effect, whereas for SI-InP is by the surge current effect. There is also a slight enhancement in the THz emission from both bare InAs and graphene/InAs by UV illumination, which is probably due to the additional photoexcited carriers by UV that somehow enhances the photo-Dember field.

AbstractWe have studied the photoluminescence of CdTe crystals doped with two elements, Cu and Cl, that are frequently used in CdTe-based solar cells. Ions were implanted into high-quality single crystals of CdTe at the Toledo Heavy Ion Accelerator Lab in our Department. We used a standard Monte Carlo simulation program to plan an implant dosage at three different energies. The lattice damage was removed by thermal annealing in an inert atmosphere using a proximity cap to avoid surface deterioration. The PL spectra at 40K were obtained at 488 nm or 752nm to match the absorption depth with the implant profile. Using implant densities typically of 1016, 1017, and 1018 /cm3, and laser excitation power densities ranging over several orders of magnitude, we have identified band-to-band transitions, free-to-bound transitions, bound-exciton lines, and donor-acceptor pair transitions related to these species.

A variety of fluorescence spectra have been measured interferometrically, demonstrating the feasibility of Fourier Transform Fluorescence Spectrometry (FT-FS). Emission spectra have been measured with the use of a monochromatic source and an interferometer as the emission selector. Excitation spectra have been measured with the use of a multi-line laser. Fluorescence polarization spectra have also been recorded with the use of laser excitation. The analytical characteristics of working curves are discussed.
