BACKGROUND Continued use of mHealth apps can achieve better effects in health management. Gamification is an important factor in promoting users’ intention to continue using mHealth apps. Past research has rarely explored the factors underlying the continued use of mobile health (mHealth) apps and gamification’s impact mechanism or path on continued use. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the factors influencing mHealth app users’ intention to continue using mHealth apps and the impact mechanism and path of users’ feelings induced by gamification on continued mHealth app use. METHODS First, based on the expectation confirmation model of information system continuance, we built a theoretical model for continued use of mHealth apps based on users’ feelings toward gamification. We used self-determination theory to analyze gamification’s impact on user perceptions and set the resulting feelings (competence, autonomy, and relatedness) as constructs in the model. Second, we used the survey method to validate the research model, and we used partial least squares to analyze the data. RESULTS A total of 2988 responses were collected from mHealth app users, and 307 responses were included in the structural equation model after passing the acceptance criteria. The intrinsic motivation for using mHealth apps is significantly affected by autonomy (β=.312; P<.001), competence (β=.346; P<.001), and relatedness (β=.165; P=.004) induced by gamification. The intrinsic motivation for using mHealth apps has a significant impact on satisfaction (β=.311, P<.001) and continuance intention (β=.142; P=.045); furthermore, satisfaction impacts continuance intention significantly (β=.415; P<.001). Confirmation has a significant impact on perceived usefulness (β=.859; P<.001) and satisfaction (β=.391; P<.001), and perceived usefulness has a significant impact on satisfaction (β=.269; P<.001) and continuance intention (β=.273; P=.001). The mediating effect analysis showed that in the impact path of the intrinsic motivation for using the mHealth apps on continuance intention, satisfaction plays a partial mediating role (β=.129; P<.001), with a variance accounted for of 0.466. CONCLUSIONS This study explored the impact path of users’ feelings induced by gamification on the intention of continued mHealth app use. We confirmed that perceived usefulness, confirmation, and satisfaction in the classical continued use theory for nonmedical information systems positively affect continuance intention. We also found that the path and mechanism of users' feelings regarding autonomy, competence, and relatedness generated during interactions with different gamification elements promote the continued use of mHealth apps.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report a study investigating the impact of personal innovativeness in information technology (PIIT) and social influence on user continuance intention toward mobile commerce (m-commerce) in the USA. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was conducted among undergraduate and graduate mobile users in a regional university. Structural equation modeling procedures were deployed to analyse 323 valid data points. Findings – The study found that among well-educated m-commerce users, user personal innovativeness as measured by PIIT and perceived usefulness, the determinants of initial adoption, remain as strong determinants of user continuance intention. PIIT also remains as the antecedent of perceived ease of use. Social influence has changed the pattern of influence on continuance intention. Research limitations/implications – This study is unable to investigate m-commerce user expectations and satisfaction levels. The small and convenient sample does not offer guarantee of the findings. Practical implications – M-commerce providers should pay adequate attention to personal innovativeness, since it affects mobile user willingness and capability to welcome and adapt to new services and features. They should always utilize social channels to gather feedback, to distribute new changes or features, and to exert positive influence. Originality/value – This study is one of the few examining the effect of PIIT in a post-adoption context and confirms its long-term psychological influence on continuance intention toward m-commerce. This study is also one of the initial to use discursive power perspective to study social influence on continuance intention in the mobile context.

Organizations have invested heavily in implementing Information Systems (IS) such as enterprise systems (ES) but experienced significant challenges in realizing the potential benefits from these systems. Despite the maturity of research in ES, little research has examined the impact of continued use of ES on job satisfaction. With increased use and dependency on systems such as ES, recent research has shown that system use can impact employees’ satisfaction especially during the earlier stages of the system implementation. This is because the implementation of this system is usually accompanied with drastic change in work duties and tasks in which employees might have to learn new skills to navigate the new system. This disruptive event can influence employees’ attitudes about their jobs following ES implementation. However, past the initial stage of implementation not much is known about the impact of continued use of ES on employee job satisfaction. This research, by drawing on theoretical models on IT continued usage and IT adoption (e.g., Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology [UTAUT]), theorizes the impact of perceived usefulness (PU) on user satisfaction, IS continuance intention, and job satisfaction, and tests a model through a survey of 108 ES users at a manufacturing company in Canada. The results suggest that facilitating conditions are a salient predictor of perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness and user satisfaction. Additionally, the results support that user satisfaction has a positive and significant effect on continuance intention and employee job satisfaction.

Based on technology acceptance theory, the authors examined the effect of perceived enjoyment and gender on the intention to continue using mobile Internet services (MIS) in an everyday life context. A survey was conducted among 623 current MIS users to test the structural equation model. Their findings confirm the effect of perceived enjoyment on MIS continuance intention as well as the moderating effect of gender. Women expressed a stronger need for perceived usefulness and ease-of-use than men, while men expressed a significant need for perceived enjoyment. Interestingly, and somewhat contrary to previous findings, the effect of perceived usefulness on MIS continuance intention was stronger for women; whereas the effect of perceived enjoyment was significantly stronger for men. The authors findings suggest that MIS developers and providers should consider the gender of users when designing and offering MIS. The paper provides some guidelines regarding how MIS can be designed and customized for gender segments.

In this study, we investigate the influence of two external influences i.e., Ease of finding and Computer anxiety on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the continuance intention of using a popular course management system (CMS): WebCT. The study used a sample of 72 students that have experience using the software. The students came from four local higher education institutions. In order to study nature of the relationships among the constructs, eight (8) hypotheses were formulated and tested using a structural equation modeling technique: Partial Least Squares (PLS). The predictive power of the model was adequate and the study found support for seven of eight hypotheses. Regarding the impact of the antecedents on continuance intention in the use of technology, the results offer the following insights: when computer anxiety is low, students are able to use the system without much difficulty, and are likely to continue to use CMS in the future. Similarly, students will continue the tool as long as they find it easy to navigate. Perhaps due to contextual factors, the data did not support the relationship between Perceived usefulness and Usage. This particular finding is at variance with the TAM’s results and viewpoint. The study’s implications for research and practice are succinctly outlined.

The purpose of this paper was to investigate what factors influence learners’ continuance intention in massive open online courses (MOOCs) for online collaborative learning. An extended expectation confirmation model (ECM) was adopted as the theoretical foundation. A total of 435 valid samples were collected in mainland China and structural equation model (SEM) approach was adopted. The descriptive statistics show that platforms from abroad, such as Coursera and Khan, are more popular than native ones in mainland China. The empirical results show that the effects of three ECM factors (satisfaction with prior learning experience, confirmation with prior learning experience, and perceived usefulness) are significant. Different factors have different predicting power. Knowledge outcome is the first powerful indicator of learners’ continuance intention of MOOCs, followed by social influence, learners’ satisfaction with prior learning experience, and performance proficiency. The effects of knowledge outcome, performance proficiency, and social influence are significant, showing the success of extended ECM.

The study investigates the underlying motives facilitating users’ continuance intention for digital content in academic settings. Extending the expectation confirmation model of IS continuance (ECM-ISC), the study proposes a conceptual model by incorporating personal and technological antecedents of users’ continuance intention for digital content. In addition, users’ environmental concerns and price value are considered as potential moderators in the relationship between their satisfaction and continuance intention for digital content. An online survey was used to collect data from 311 digital content users of a large public university in Saudi Arabia. Structural equation modeling was used to test the relationships in the conceptual model. The results obtained from SmartPLS 3.2 confirm that compatibility, convenience, self-efficacy, and facilitating conditions are the predictors of confirmation and usefulness of digital content. The confirmation of expectations and perceived usefulness result in greater satisfaction with the digital content, which in turn leads to users’ continuance intention. In addition, the article provides empirical evidence for the impact of environmental concerns on the satisfaction–continuance intention relationship, thus opening a novel research debate. The study is expected to offer new insights both for academicians and managers of digital content.

BACKGROUND Mobile health (mhealth) applications (apps) promotion has been increasingly used year after year. They have recently played an important role in preventing an unhealthy society. Mhealth apps have been developed in different health areas, increasingly satisfying user goals. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore and understand important factors that contribute to use behavior and the intention to continue using mhealth apps, in combination with the self-determination theory, and produce well-being and consciousness in health. This study extends the findings to continue usage, along with the intrinsic motivation of each consumer that drives well-being. METHODS The proposed model was empirically tested using data from a survey. We obtained 306 valid responses through an online questionnaire created in Qualtrics from participants that use mhealth apps. We applied the partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique to test the research model. RESULTS The results show that the drivers of intrinsic motivation with statistical significance were perceived autonomy ((β ) ̂= 0.23; P < .001), perceived relatedness (β ̂ = 0.11; P = 0.049) and perceived competence (β ̂ = 0.50; P < .001). The drivers of perceived usefulness with statistical significance were confirmation (β ̂ = 0.74; P < .001). The precursors of satisfaction that were statistical significance were confirmation (β ̂ = 0.66; P < .001) and perceived usefulness ((β ) ̂= 0.22; P < .001). Use behavior was significantly influenced by intrinsic motivation (β ̂ = 0.58; P < .001) and perceived usefulness (β ̂ = 0.32; P < .001). The drivers of continuance intention to use with statistical significance were intrinsic motivation (β ̂ = 0.12; P = .018), perceived usefulness (β ̂ = 0.14; P = .004), satisfaction (β ̂ = 0.48; P < .001) and use behavior (β ̂ = 0.22; P < .001). Well-being was significantly influenced by use behavior (β ̂ = 0.62; P < .001) and continuance intention to use (β ̂ = 0.19; P = .001). The moderation effect of health consciousness in the relationship between use behavior and well-being (β ̂ = 0.14; P = .006) was statistically significant but the relationship between continuance intention to use and well-being (β ̂ = -0.06; P = .22), was not statistically significant. Therefore, the model explained over 50.8% of the total variance in intrinsic motivation, 54,4% of the variance in perceived usefulness, 69.6% of the variance satisfaction, 62.2% of the variance use behavior, 73.6% of the variance continuance intention to use, and 65.6% of the variance well-being. CONCLUSIONS Our study contributes to the continuance theory of the use of mhealth apps. The model found that intrinsic motivation, satisfaction, perceived usefulness, and user behavior significantly affect continuance intention. Our study demonstrates a significant role in a society that uses mhealth apps and that their use reflects well-being with the moderation effect of health consciousness.
