Clinical education is a cornerstone of undergraduate nursing education programs. Although protecting patient safety in clinical learning experiences is a standard of practice, no standard definition of the “unsafe” student exists. The purpose of this study was to describe the viewpoints of undergraduate student nurses and their clinical educators about unsafe clinical student practices. Using Q methodology, 57 students and 14 clinical educators sorted 39 unsafe student practice statements. These statements were generated from an integrated review of nursing and related literature and two undergraduate student focus groups. The use of centroid factor analysis with varimax rotation produced three dimensions of unsafe student practices. An unsafe student was characterized by his/her Compromised Professional Accountability, Incomplete Praxis, and Clinical Disengagement. A shared attribute among these three features was violated professional integrity. While students’ affective, cognitive, and praxis competencies were priority elements in the conceptualization of unsafe student practice, this study also identified the salient role of educators as active participants in preparation of safe practitioners.

Background: This study explored the experiences of undergraduate nursing students during clinical practice at healthcare facilities in the Boland Overberg area in Western Cape, South Africa. Few studies have been done on experiences of nursing students during clinical practice. However, there are still inadequacies, which lead to the deterioration of clinical practice quality.Objectives: To explore and describe the experiences of undergraduate student nurses during clinical practice in healthcare facilities in Boland Overberg, in Western Cape, South Africa.Method: A qualitative, exploratory descriptive design was applied. Data collection was done using focus-group interviews to ascertain the undergraduate student nurses’ experiences during clinical practice in healthcare facilities in the Boland Overberg area in Western Cape Region. Thirty-eight undergraduate nursing students from Boland Campus were selected, using purposive sampling. The sample size was based on data saturation. Colaizzi’s method of coding and thematic content analysis was used to interpret the data. Ethical principles were adhered to.Results: After data analysis, the following themes emerged: clinical learning environment, challenges and inability to reach objectives.Conclusion: During clinical practice in healthcare facilities, students were confronted with dilemmas which must be addressed with proper planning to decrease the challenges in clinical education of future nurses. The findings can be used in planning of nursing education, could provide help to develop effective clinical teaching strategies in nursing education and to support these undergraduate nursing students.

Clinical experience is an integral aspect of nursing education as it transforms the theoretical knowledge into practice and the cornerstone of nursing as a health profession. The experience gained through a good and supportive clinical environment includes the atmosphere of the clinical placement unit, and the relationships shared with clinical staff supervisors (staff nurses) and mentors (Clinical instructors) that will affect the students learning. Elements like good teaching, relationship with the clinical staff and opportunity to practice, need to be assessed to have an understanding of the student’s perception regarding clinical learning environment. The aim of the present study was to assess the clinical learning environment among undergraduate nursing students of various colleges of Punjab. Materials and methods: A non experimental, descriptive research design was used to assess the perception regarding clinical learning environment among undergraduate nursing students. SECEE inventory (student evaluation of clinical education environment) by Kari Jecklin - Sand was used to determine the clinical learning environment. Five Nursing institutions were selected conveniently to select 500 under graduate nursing students randomly. Results and Major Findings: The findings of the study revealed that Majority (68%) of the study subjects were satisfied with their clinical learning environment followed by 30.8% who were moderately satisfied and only 1.2% were unsatisfied with their clinical learning environment. As per the Personal Profile of the study subjects, age and gender were found highly significant with the perceived clinical environment score at the 0.01 level of significance whereas no significant association was found out with the habitat, marital status, type of family, place of stay during study and financing during study. As per the family background, mother’s occupation was found highly associated with the clinical learning environment score whereas no association was found with the annual income of parents, education of mother, education of father, father’s occupation and number of siblings.

Breastfeeding is an important health topic worldwide, although lack of breastfeeding knowledge is noted among health-care professionals. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes in undergraduate nursing students at the beginning and end of their clinical education. An electronic survey, based on the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale and the Breastfeeding Knowledge Questionnaire, was administered. Attitude scores did not differ significantly between groups. Total knowledge scores between groups differed modestly (p = .006). Correlations between total knowledge and total attitude scores were found (r[89] = .482, p < .000). Respondents reported that nursing education effectively teaches breastfeeding and that breastfeeding advocacy through patient education is a crucial nursing role.

This study aimed to explore the cluster patterns of female nursing students’ perceptions of the effects of menstrual distress during clinical practice. This study adopted the Q-methodology study design. We recruited female nursing students from a college in northern Taiwan. Forty-seven Q-statements were constructed to explore participants’ experiences of the impact of menstrual distress on clinical learning. In total, 58 participants subjectively ranked Q-statements concerning menstrual distress experiences during clinical practice and were classified. After Q-sorting, the subjective ranking process PQ Method (version 2.35, Schmolck, Emmendingen, Germany) was employed for factor analysis. Four patterns of shared perspectives, accounting for 46.6% of the total variance, were identified: (a) influencing clinical learning and making good use of painkillers; (b) responsible attitudes and diversified relief of discomfort; (c) seeking peer support and effect on mood; (d) negative impact on learning ability and conservative self-care. Clinical practice is a major component of nursing education; menstrual distress affects female nursing students’ clinical learning and performance. The exploration of clustering different nursing students’ perceptions may facilitate customized strategies to enable more appropriate assistance.

The aim of this is paper is to propose Benner’s “Novice to Expert” Framework to underpin learning for students as they progress through the clinical components of an undergraduate nursing educational program. Steinaker and Bell’s “Experiential Taxonomy” is presented as a practical medium for itemizing the nursing activities novices are exposed to at the initiation of clinical experience and to the clinical competencies expected of nurses on completion of their educational program. The authors also propose a range of theories of learning applicable to the clinical education of undergraduate nursing students, which can be maximized to enhance clinical learning.

Background: Clinical facilitation is an essential part of the undergraduate nursing curriculum. A number of studies address the issue of clinical facilitation in South Africa, but there remains a lack of knowledge and understanding regarding what students perceive as best practice in clinical facilitation of their learning.Objective: To determine what type of clinical facilitation undergraduate students believe should be offered by clinical facilitators (nurse educators, professional nurses and clinical preceptors) in the clinical area in order to best facilitate their learning.Method: A qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study was conducted. Purposive sampling was performed to select nursing students from the second, third and fourth year of studies from a selected nursing education institution in Johannesburg. The sampling resulted in one focus group for each level of nursing, namely second, third and fourth year nursing students. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim, thematic data analysis was used and trustworthiness was ensured by applying credibility, dependability, confirmability and transferability.Main findings: The data revealed that participants differentiated between best practices in clinical facilitation in the clinical skills laboratory and clinical learning environment. In the clinical skills laboratory, pre-contact preparation, demonstration technique and optimising group learning were identified as best practices. In the clinical learning environment, a need for standardisation of procedures in simulation and practice, the allocation and support for students also emerged.Conclusion: There is a need for all nurses involved in undergraduate nursing education to reflect on how they approach clinical facilitation, in both clinical skills laboratory and clinical learning environment. There is also a need to improve consistency in clinical practices between the nursing education institution and the clinical learning environment so as to support students’ adaptation to clinical practice.

Background: Nursing students apply theoretical and evidence-based knowledge on real patients in clinical placements, thus poor clinical education may affect their performance along with patient care. The perceptions of nursing internees may serve as a solid evidence of issues in clinical learning. The objective of this study was to identify issues regarding clinical learning among undergraduate nursing students. Material and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed to collect data from a sample of 72 graduated Nursing Internees from Nursing Colleges in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province of Pakistan. This study was conducted from April 2019 to August 2019. A Questionnaire in the form of Likert scale was developed for data collection regarding past experiences of their undergraduate studies. SPSS 22 was used for analysis. Chi-squared test was used to compare between male/female, public/private clinical placements and public/private colleges, respectively.    Results: Of the participants 79% (n=57) were male and 21% (n=15) were female. Mean age of participants was 24.29±1.72 years. Four barriers in clinical education due to deficiencies in educational institutions included: shortage of clinical teachers (76.4%), clinical teachers rarely visited students (75%), too many students were supervised by a single teacher (81.9%) and students are overloaded with too many written assignments (75%). The P-value for shortage of clinical teachers was statistically significant (P=.016). The main barriers in clinical education attributed to clinical settings or the hospitals were behavior of the hospital staff resulting in the loss of students’ confidence (73.6%) and anxiety of students to perform wrong procedures (73.6%).  However, none of these barriers in clinical education were statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusion: Findings of the study illustrated dissatisfaction of graduate nursing internees regarding the clinical education as almost all the issues received more than 50% responses. Abstract Background Despite the advantages of using active learning strategies in nursing education, researchers have rarely investigated how such pedagogic approaches can be used to assess students or how interactive examinations can be modified depending on circumstances of practice (e.g., in online education). Aims The aim was to compare three interactive examination designs, all based on active learning pedagogy, in terms of nursing students’ engagement and preparedness, their learning achievement, and instructional aspects. Methods A comparative research design was used including final-year undergraduate nursing students. All students were enrolled in a quality improvement course at a metropolitan university in Sweden. In this comparative study to evaluate three course layouts, participants (Cohort 1, n = 89; Cohort 2, n = 97; Cohort 3, n = 60) completed different examinations assessing the same course content and learning objectives, after which they evaluated the examinations on a questionnaire in numerical and free-text responses. Chi-squared tests were conducted to compare background variables between the cohorts and Kruskal–Wallis H tests to assess numerical differences in experiences between cohorts. Following the guidelines of the Good Reporting of a Mixed Methods Study (GRAMMS), a sequential mixed-methods analysis was performed on the quantitative findings, and the qualitative findings were used complementary to support the interpretation of the quantitative results. Results The 246 students who completed the questionnaire generally appreciated the interactive examination in active learning classrooms. Among significant differences in the results, Cohort 2 (e.g., conducted the examination on campus) scored highest for overall positive experience and engagement, whereas Cohort 3 (e.g., conducted the examination online) scored the lowest. Students in Cohort 3 generally commended the online examination’s chat function available for use during the examination. Conclusions Interactive examinations for nursing students succeed when they are campus-based, focus on student preparation, and provide the necessary time to be completed.

Abstract Objectives To explore attitudes about adding genomic content to an undergraduate nursing curriculum. Genomic knowledge is essential to nursing education, but challenges exist for curriculum innovation. Few countries have guiding documents from national nursing organizations on genomic competencies for practice or education. Information on attitudes about genomics may provide guidance for curriculum development. Methods Nineteen undergraduate nursing students and two faculty from a school of nursing with two sites in western Canada participated. Five focus groups and four interviews were conducted using a semi-structured focus group guide. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Coding was inductive. Results Characteristics of participants, eight key themes, and four future focal areas were identified to guide future research and curriculum development. Conclusions Global development of genomics-informed curricula will require a focus on increasing knowledge, defining scope and role, increasing visibility of role models, and preparing to implement precision health.
