Large scale underground caverns are under construction in high in-situ stress field at Houziyan hydropower station. To investigate deformation and damage of surrounding rock mass, a elastoplastic orthotropic damage model capable of describing induced orthotropic damage and post-peak behavior of hard rock is used, together with a effective approach accounting for the presence of weak planes. Then a displacement based back analysis was conducted by using the measured deformation data from extensometers. The computed displacements are in good agreement with the measured ones at most of measurement points, which confirm the validities of constitutive model and numerical simulation model. The result of simulation shows that damage of surrounding rock mass is mainly dominated by the high in-situ stress rather than the weak planes and heavy damage occur at the cavern shoulders and side walls.

In order to compare the influence of rock mass parameters weakening on the deformation and stability of excavation caverns in layered rock mass, based on power generation system caverns of a hydropower station, the stability and deformation of the caverns is analyzed. The results show that the mechanical characteristics of the structure surface play a major role in controlling the stability of caverns. And the displacement and yield zone value of plan 3, which adopt elastic-plastic softening model, are significantly larger than other two. The method which consider the residual strength of structure surface is more suitable for the excavation calculation of layered rock mass cavern.

Under complicated geological conditions, the vibration in the dam foundation caused by blasting can lead to further deterioration of the foundation rock mass and adversely affect the safety of foundation. In order to effectively control the vibration in dam foundation rock mass, a new bench blasting technique with shock-reflection device is proposed. It introduces a shock-reflection device consisting of high wave impedance block and cushion material, which is placed at the bottom of vertical borehole. This shock-reflection device can effectively reflect the explosion shock wave from vertical direction to horizontal direction after detonation, which can make blasting energy concentrated on the rock mass above dam foundation, so the vibration in the foundation can be controlled. Field blasting experiment was carried out to contrast the blasting induced vibration in foundation rock by bench blasting with shock-reflection device and conventional bench blasting. The results indicate that the vibration in the foundation rock can be reduced by 30%~57%. In addition, the vibration at the bottom of the borehole is also demonstrated by numerical simulation, with results similar to the field experiments. The production experiment results show that the new blasting technique can replace the conventional excavation method of dam foundation in complicated geological conditions, and the new blasting technique has been successfully applied to the Baihetan dam foundation excavation.

The distribution of hydraulic pressure in fractured rock mass surrounding caverns after excavation and technique of stochastic generation of joint network are investigated based on discrete element method. In order to seal the oil in underground caverns with water in the actual engineering, a water curtain with water pressure is installed, and the changes of hydraulic pressure are simulated with a series of curtain pressures. It is shown that some joints that have been drained out during excavation can not be saturated if the water curtain pressure is less than a certain value. Water curtain pressure with a certain value gives a strong safe guarantee of saving oil in the underground petroleum storage caverns.
