TiO2/C-dot composites were synthesised by sol-gel method and  investigated as catalysts for photocatalytic degradation of persistent organic pollutants (perchloroethylene, PCE). The composites photoluminescence properties was shown by visual analysis and the synthesis product was characterized by XRD, FTIR, fluorescence spectrophotometer, and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Degradation of PCE 0.1% (v/v) in the aqueous phase was investigated under sunlight irradiation for 2 h. Photodegrade efficiency of PCE was determined by GC. Composites of TiO2/C-dot 2.5% (w/w) was succesfully to degrade PCE under sunlight irradiation and its photodegrade efficiency was up to 89.45%.

Magnetic-field-accelerated photocatalytic degradation of the phenol red (PR) as a model organic pollutant was studied using rare-earth elements modified BiFeO3 (Bi1−xRxFeO3 (R = Ce, Tb; x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15); BFO: RE) nanostructures. The nanostructures were prepared via the hydrothermal process and their morphological, structural, functional, optical and magnetic features were investigated in detail. The effect of magnetic fields (MFs) on photocatalysis were examined by applying the different MFs under visible light irradiation. The enhanced photodegradation efficiencies were achieved by increasing the MF up to 0.5T and reduced at 0.7T for the compositions x = 0.10 in both Ce and Tb substituted BFO. Further, mineralization efficiencies of PR, reproducibility of MF-assisted photocatalysis, stability and recyclability of BFO: RE nanostructures were also tested.

Bismuth oxyhalides have recently gained attention for their promise as photocatalysts. Due to their layered structure, these materials present fascinating and highly desirable physicochemical properties including visible light photocatalytic capability and improved charge separation. While bismuth oxyhalides have been rigorously evaluated for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes and many synthesis strategies have been employed to enhance this property, relatively little work has been done to test them against pharmaceuticals and pesticides. These persistent organic pollutants are identified as emerging concerns by the EPA and effective strategies must be developed to combat them. Here, we review recent work directed at characterizing the nature of the interactions between bismuth oxyhalides and persistent organic pollutants using techniques including LC-MS/MS for the determination of photocatalytic degradation intermediates and radical scavenging to determine active species during photocatalytic degradation. The reported investigations indicate that the high activity of bismuth oxyhalides for the breakdown of persistent organic pollutants from water can be largely attributed to the strong oxidizing power of electron holes in the valence band. Unlike conventional catalysts like TiO2, these catalysts can also function in ambient solar conditions. This suggests a much wider potential use for these materials as green catalysts for industrial photocatalytic transformation, particularly in flow chemistry applications.

The incidence of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases worldwide has dramatically increased over the last decades. Although the aetiology remains uncertain, evidence is now growing that exposure to persistent organic pollutants during sensitive neurodevelopmental periods such as early life may be a strong risk factor, predisposing the individual to disease development later in life. Epidemiological studies have associated environmentally persistent organic pollutant exposure to brain disorders including neuropathies, cognitive, motor, and sensory impairments; neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In many ways, this expands the classical “Developmental Origins of Health and Disease” paradigm to include exposure to pollutants. This model has been refined over the years to give the current “three-hit” model that considers the individual’s genetic factors as a first “hit.” It has an immediate interaction with the early-life exposome (including persistent organic pollutants) that can be considered to be a second “hit.” Together, these first two “hits” produce a quiescent or latent phenotype, most probably encoded in the epigenome, which has become susceptible to a third environmental “hit” in later life. It is only after the third “hit” that the increased risk of disease symptoms is crystallised. However, if the individual is exposed to a different environment in later life, they would be expected to remain healthy. In this review, we examine the effect of exposure to persistent organic pollutants and particulate matters in early life and the relationship to subsequent neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. The roles of those environmental factors which may affect epigenetic DNA methylation and therefore influence normal neurodevelopment are then evaluated.
