Objective: The objective of the study was to execute systematic heavy metal assessment of the plant to ensure its safe usage in herbal medicine or as nutraceuticals. Blepharis maderaspatensis (L.)Heyne ex Roth commonly called as Nethiramooli in Tamil is a widely distributed medicinal herb with a long history of traditional usage in the treatment of many ailments.Method: The plant material was collected from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India, duly authenticated and heavy metal content investigated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry.Results: Results indicated that the toxic metal, mercury was not detectable even in traces; other metals such as cadmium, chromium, molybdenum, manganese, nickel, and lead were found at very low quantities while trace elements such as iron, zinc, copper, and cobalt in fairly significant concentrations.Conclusions: These results thus substantiate the safe usage of this plant and may be used to set new standards for prescribing the dosage of the herbal drugs prepared from it, ensuring a better understanding of the risks associated with its usage.

 Objective: Ulva reticulata is a marine edible green seaweed widely distributed along the coastal lines of India. The present study was designed to screen the phytochemicals and evaluate heavy metals content of U. reticulata collected from Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, India, in the perspective of assessing their therapeutic value and/or safety in relation to its uses.Method: The seaweed sample was subjected to extraction with solvents of different polarities (methanol, ethanol, acetone, chloroform, and petroleum ether) and screened for phytochemicals according to standard methods. Heavy metal analysis was also performed with the dried sample powder using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES).Result: Preliminary phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of reducing sugar, proteins, flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, and anthraquinones. ICP-OES indicated the seaweed to contain relative amount of heavy metals in the order of iron (Fe) > chromium (Cr) > Zinc (Zn) > nickel (Ni) > copper (Cu) > lead (Pb) - cadmium (Cd) and is within the permissible limits set by the WHO/FAO, except Fe and Cr.Conclusion: The different solvent extracts of U. reticulata showed the presence of the number of phytochemicals. Furthermore, the present study has revealed the presence of heavy metals in U. reticulata which can be a representative picture of the dissolved metals in the aquatic phase.

Costume jewelry may expose skin to toxic metals due to sweat and friction, causing intoxications. An investigation was conducted over costume jewelry rings to study its behavior and verify its safety throughout their use, regarding toxic metal contamination. Qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of the internal and external layers of the ring samples (costume jewelry) were made through X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES). The ring samples were also immerged in a synthetic sweat solution for 30 days. The lixiviated solution and post treated surfaces were analyzed by ICP-OES and Search Electron Microscopy (SEM), respectively.  Metals such as Cu, Cd, Cr and Ni were identified in the surface composition, as well in the composition of the digested samples. The synthetic sweat eroded the rings surfaces, and metals such as Cd and Mn were lixiviated by it. The results indicate the presence and lixiviation of harmful metals that may cause health and environmental problems.

Abstract For the characterisation of the environmental mobility of heavy metal contamination in aquatic sediments, the EU Bureau of Reference has proposed a fractionation by sequential extraction procedure. For its validation, the CRM-701 sample is available containing Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn. In this paper, the matrix-matched calibration problems are presented. A multi-elemental inductively coupled plasma-optical emission technique is employed for the detection of heavy metals in the extracts. It was established that the sensitivities are strongly influenced by the extractants, which causes significant matrix effects: the sensitivities are strongly influenced by the solvents applied in extraction steps; the summarised recoveries show an acceptable agreement with the certified values; however, in the individual extraction steps for certain elements significant differences may occur due to the neglected interferences. Therefore, further optimisation is required utilising the flexible line selection possibility offered by the HORIBA Jobin Yvon ACTIVA-M instrument.

The metal contents of 19 tea leave samples, Camellia sinensis L., from Yen Bai and Tuyen Quang provinces were determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Total 18 elements in tea leaves were determined including macroelement such as Al, Ca, K, Mg, Mn; trace element such as Na, Ba, Fe, Cu, Sn, Zn, Se, Ni, B and heavy metal (Pb, Hg, Cd and metalloid As). The results show that, K content was the highest among the macroelement, followed by Mg, Ca, Mn and Al. There was a wide variation of the trace metal content among the tea leaves coming from different province. The levels of heavy metal content in most of the samples were not detectable or below the acceptable level as required by Ministry of Health.

In order to evaluate the effects of different transportation hubs on cultivated soil and apricots, macro and micro elements and heavy metal contents of fruit, leaf, kernel and soil samples collected from apricot orchards located at the border of the railroad, the motorway, the airport, and an orchard far from transportation modes were detected by ICP/OES (inductively coupled plasma / optical emission spectrometry). The results indicated the highest Cd, Pb and Ni contents of soil, fruit, and kernel samples under impacts of railroad transportation modes, whereas the highest contents of leaf were found under motorway side. All fruit samples contained higher amounts of Cd and Pb compared to permissible limits of FAO/WHO, and contents differentiated between sampling locations. There were no correlative relations found between transportation modes and macro-micro element contents. As a conclusion, in terms of heavy metal contamination, the orchards located at railway sides have the highest risk and this was followed by motorway side.

Abstract Pet owners often don’t acknowledge the need for home-prepared diet formulation by a trained professional and may use recipes from sources such as the internet. Macronutrient and mineral composition of home-prepared diets were analyzed and compared to NRC and FEDIAF recommendations, and heavy metal concentrations were analyzed and compared to FDA maximum tolerable levels (MTL) for dogs and cats. Recipes of home-prepared diets for adult dogs (n = 75) and cats (n = 25) were evaluated. Analyses of protein, fat, and fiber were performed according to AOAC, and mineral and heavy metal analyses were performed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). None of the diets supplied recommended levels of all nutrients evaluated, and more than 84.0% of diets presented three or more nutrients below recommendations. Nutrients with most levels below recommendations were calcium and potassium in recipes for dogs and iron and zinc in recipes for cats. As for heavy metals, levels of lead, cobalt, mercury, uranium, and vanadium were above MTLs. Results suggest that home-prepared diets may be a health risk to dogs and cats if not properly formulated. Furthermore, the chronic heavy metal intake must be better elucidated in order to understand the full impact of results.
