Objectives: This study was conducted to identify and report the adverse drug reactions (ADRs) which are occurring in pediatric and medicine departments in a tertiary care hospital at Vadodara. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted for 6 months in-patient at a tertiary care teaching hospital. We enrolled the patients based on inclusion criteria and data was analyzed with the help of MS excel 7 and Graph pad Prism. Further, the assessments of type, severity, and preventability of reported ADRs were done using Wills and Brown classification, modified Schumock and Thornton severity scale, modified Hartwig and Siegel preventability scale. Results: Data were collected from a total of two hundred patients of which twenty-six (13%) patients were affected with ADRs. Among twenty-six patients, females (64%) were more affected with ADRs when compared to males (36%). According to the department, most ADRs were observed in the medicine ward than in the pediatric. The highest number of ADRs was associated with antibiotics (46.1%). Based on the type of ADRs, Type B ADRs (77%) were more observed followed by Type A (7%) and Type C (8%). Conclusions: The information obtained from our study will help clinical pharmacists and healthcare professionals to take precautions in the future and adopt certain measures for preventing the ADRs and hence help in promoting safer and rational drug use in institutions and improving the quality of patient care.

Introduction: Pharmacovigilance helps in the detection and prevention of adverse effects of drugs. For the effectiveness of this program, health care professionals should report adverse drug reactions (ADRs) considering it as their moral and professional obligation. The objective of the study was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of the doctors towards ADRs and pharmacovigilance in  National Medical College Teaching Hospital (NMCTH), a tertiary care teaching hospital situated in the Narayani zone. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out using a self-administered questionnaire consisting of four parts; first part included a demographic profile of participants, the second part consisted of ten questions for the assessment of the knowledge about pharmacovigilance, third part comprised of six questions on attitude and fourth part consisted of five questions on practice. The results were depicted in the form of percentages for each KAPs questionnaire.   Results: The response rate of participants was 85.16%. Pharmacovigilance was correctly defined by 52%. Department of drug administration was responsible for monitoring ADRs in Nepal was correctly given by 80%. Only 8% had reported ADRs, although 62% had encountered an ADR in their clinical practice. Conclusion: The doctors at NMCTH had a poor KAP towards pharmacovigilance and educational intervention is needed for the proper functioning of this program.

ABSTRACTObjective: The aim of this study was to carry out adverse drug reactions (ADRs) monitoring in various departments of a tertiary care teaching hospital.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on ADRs reported in the hospital from December 2012 to May 2013 after obtaining InstitutionalEthics Committee approval.Results: A total of 40 ADRs were reported, 47.50% were males and 52.50% were females. The female adult population was 45%. The majority of ADRswere due to antimicrobial agents especially beta-lactam antibiotics (42.5%) followed by NSAIDs (7.50%). A maximum number of patients (75%)were reported with dermatological manifestations. The department of medicine reported the highest number of ADRs (37.5%). As per Naranjo’sprobability scale, 62.5% reports were assessed as probable. 62.5% reports were documented as mild according to Modified Hartwig’s criteria forseverity assessment.Conclusion: This study was done to sensitize the practicing physicians on the importance of adverse drug monitoring and reporting.Keywords: Pharmacovigilance, Adverse drug reactions, Tertiary care teaching hospital, Antimicrobial agents.

Background: The present study was designed to assess awareness regarding rational drug therapy and fixed dose combinations (FDC) amongst interns and II MBBS students in a tertiary-care teaching hospital in Maharashtra, India.Methods: This cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study containing MCQ and analytical questions on rational drug therapy, fixed dose combinations and role of Pharmacist in dispensing correct drug to the patients was carried out in both interns (n=80) and II MBBS students (n=100). The completed questionnaires were then collected and analysed statistically for responses.Results: Mean average score obtained by II MBBS students (score - 36.66marks) was significantly better than interns (score- 20marks) which probably may be due to pharmacology teaching they were undergoing. II MBBS students were found to be better informed as compared to the interns (p<0.05) on questions related to rational drug therapy. On the questions related to rationality of FDC in Yes/No type, interns and II MBBS students were found to be equally informed (p>0.05). However, on question related to justification of FDC, interns were found to be better informed as compared to the II MBBS students (p<0.05). On single question pertaining to role of pharmacist, interns were found to be better informed than II MBBS students possibly due to their better understanding of patient-pharmacist relationship.Conclusions: Our study highlights the significance regarding knowledge of rational drug therapy and fixed dose combination (both rational and irrational), both rational and irrational, amongst both interns and II MBBS students while identifying the possible areas of interventions to make them rational clinicians.
