The article examines the striking conceptual similarities between the personality-theory approach of Dr Carl Rogers and the television-programming approach of Mr. Fred Rogers. Their similarities in background and early training, their basic concern for children, and their focusing on concepts of acceptance, feelings, sensitivity and growth-experience are examined and discussed.

Though professionally unaware of each other, Carl and Fred Rogers had much–including religious upbringings, early career interests in child well-being, and primary aspects of their philosophies on life and human potential–in common. Carl Rogers became one of the most influential American psychologists to date, in formulating person-centered approaches to psychotherapy and life, and as a children’s television host Fred Rogers was–and has remained, in the eyes of generations of kids and adults alike over the last 50 some-odd years–in many ways perhaps the most exemplary late 20th century embodiment of Carl Rogers’ proposed way of being. Here, I–a mentor to motivated students in the meteorological and psychological sciences, and others in wider life–discuss my discovery of the person-centered approach, via childhood exposure to Fred Rogers; and provide perspective on the ways the person-centered approach can be utilized to foster more effective and meaningful mentorship and learning-based relationships.

Abstract The aim of the article is to propose a connection between the construct of self as thought by the psychologist Carl Rogers in his personality theory and the notion of being-here, developed by Martin Heidegger's Existential Analytic. With reference to these authors, we discuss the possibility of a new vision of self from the contributions of the client-centered approach of Eugene Gendlin. Despite the recognition of differences in epistemological and ontological fields in which the authors are located, a rapprochement between self and being-here is considered possible. We expected that the debate on this issue will contribute to the enrichment of Phenomenological Psychology.

Field research was designed to test the efficacy of television programming strategies based on task analysis and social learning theory for teaching a complex conceptual behavior, seriation, to Papago Indian children. Sesame Street has been effective in teaching associative learning skills, but has not met its objectives relating to more complex cognitive skills. In the present study the effectiveness of an alternative programming approach was assessed. Forty subjects aged three to five years were randomly assigned to two conditions. Experimental subjects viewed video tapes depicting seriation concepts; control subjects viewed placebo tapes. Highly significant differences between groups were revealed. The conclusion is drawn that sequentially arranged instruction can be effective in teaching a complex conceptual behavior to preschool children in culturally different environments.

Single electron band structure techniques have been applied successfully to the interpretation of the near edge structures of metals and other materials. Among various band theories, the linear combination of atomic orbital (LCAO) method is especially simple and interpretable. The commonly used empirical LCAO method is mainly an interpolation method, where the energies and wave functions of atomic orbitals are adjusted in order to fit experimental or more accurately determined electron states. To achieve better accuracy, the size of calculation has to be expanded, for example, to include excited states and more-distant-neighboring atoms. This tends to sacrifice the simplicity and interpretability of the method. In this paper. we adopt an ab initio scheme which incorporates the conceptual advantage of the LCAO method with the accuracy of ab initio pseudopotential calculations. The so called pscudo-atomic-orbitals (PAO's), computed from a free atom within the local-density approximation and the pseudopotential approximation, are used as the basis of expansion, replacing the usually very large set of plane waves in the conventional pseudopotential method. These PAO's however, do not consist of a rigorously complete set of orthonormal states.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of special education practitioners (i.e., speech-language pathologists, special educators, para-educators, and other related service providers) on their role as communication partners after participation in the Social Communication and Engagement Triad (Buckley et al., 2015 ) yearlong professional learning program. Method A qualitative approach using interviews and purposeful sampling was used. A total of 22 participants who completed participation in either Year 1 or Year 2 of the program were interviewed. Participants were speech-language pathologists, special educators, para-educators, and other related service providers. Using a grounded theory approach (Glaser & Strauss, 1967 ) to data analysis, open, axial, and selective coding procedures were followed. Results Three themes emerged from the data analysis and included engagement as the goal, role as a communication partner, and importance of collaboration. Conclusions Findings supported the notion that educators see the value of an integrative approach to service delivery, supporting students' social communication and engagement across the school day but also recognizing the challenges they face in making this a reality.
