A mathematics framework was developed to integrate problem-solving that incorporated simulation of real-life problems in the classrooms. The framework coined as the RECCE-MODEL emphasised understanding and thinking with a view on mathematics embedded in real-life. The RECCE which stands for Realistic, Educational, Contextual, Cognitive, and Evaluation encompass the underlying principles of teaching problem solving and guide teachers in planning, designing, developing, and facilitating real-life activity tasks in developing students’ problem-solving competencies in mathematics lessons. It also explores students’ cognitive competency in their application of abstract mathematical knowledge into real-life problems based on students’ developmental status of their thinking and reasoning skills correlating to Meanings, Organise, Develop, Execute and Link (MODEL). This study investigated the affective development of the students through activity tasks developed by the sampled teachers using the principles within the framework. In total, 94 students from two high schools in Brunei Darussalam responded to a students’ questionnaire constructed to address the MODEL aspect of the framework. In particular, the analyses involved the students’ affective competencies that corresponded to a 19-item instrument within the questionnaire.  The findings showed that Brunei high school students have stimulated beliefs and positive attitudes towards non-routine problem-solving in the learning of mathematics. Meanwhile, meaningful activities developed by the teachers encouraged the development of cognitive-metacognitive and affective competencies of the students. The RECCE-MODEL framework paved the way towards understanding the relationships between effective pedagogical approaches and students’ learning, and between attitudes and cognitive abilities, and also for teachers to make better-informed decisions in the delivery of the curriculum.

Kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis adalah salah satu kemampuan yang harus dikuasai oleh siswa agar mampu secara matematis memecahkan masalah sering dijumpai di kehidupan nyata. Indikator kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis meliputi mampu memahami masalah, merencanakan strategi pemecahan masalah, melakukan strategi atau prosedur pemecahan masalah, dan memeriksa kebenaran jawaban atau hasil yang diperoleh. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa SMP ditinjau dari Kemampuan Awal Matematik (KAM). Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah deksriptif. Subjek penelitian yaitu siswa kelas VIII F SMP Angkasa Lanud Sulaiman yang berjumlah 30 orang. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian berupa tes soal uraian kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis sebanyak 5 soal. Analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah dengan mengelompokkan siswa berdasarkan hasil Penilaian Tengah Semester (PTS) sebagai kemampuan awal siswa. Siswa dibagi menjadi tiga kelompok, yaitu kelompok KAM atas, kelompok KAM menengah dan kelompok KAM bawah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa kesulitan mengerjakan soal nomor 5 dan baik siswa kelompok KAM atas, KAM menengah maupun KAM bawah, siswa kurang menguasai indikator ke-4 yaitu memeriksa kebenaran jawaban. Kata kunci: kemampuan awal matematika, kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis.   ABSTRACT Mathematical problem solving ability is one of the abilities that must be mastered by students in order to be able to mathematically solve problems often found in real life. Indicators of mathematical problem solving capabilities include being able to understand problems, plan problem solving strategies, perform strategies or procedures for problem solving, and check the truth of answers or results obtained. This study aims to determine the mathematical problem solving abilities of junior high school students in terms of Early Mathematical Ability (KAM). The method used in this study is descriptive. The research subjects were class VIII F Space Junior High School Sulaiman Air Base which numbered 30 people. The instrument used in the study was a test of the questions about the mathematical problem solving abilities of 5 questions. Analysis of the data used in this study is to classify students based on the results of the Middle Semester Assessment (PTS) as students' initial abilities. Students are divided into three groups, namely the upper KAM group, the middle KAM group and the lower KAM group. The results showed that students had difficulty working on the number 5 questions and both the upper KAM group students, the middle KAM and the lower KAM students, students did not master the 4th indicator, namely checking the correctness of the answers. <span lang="EN-US">Mastering of Competency in Explaining Ratio two variables and problem solving that is related to ratio two variables is very important. This competency is needed to understand Mathematics material/ subject for the next steps, and in real life, many problems that is related to ratio. The purpose of this research is to know the problems that are face by junior high school students in studying ratio in mathematics subject. This research methods uses qualitative case studying to know the student’s problem in ratio in this pandemic situation. There are 90 seventh students of junior high scholl 15 Surakarta as the subjects in this research. This instrument that is used in this research is mathematics test of ratio two variables. The test are developed from essay questions the analyze the students answer. The low capability in answering ratio two variables test is caused by the low of conceptual understanding, unaccuration in procedure and principle. </span>

The major aim of teaching Mathematics is to develop problem solving skill among the students. This article aims to find out the problem solving strategies and to test the students’ ability in using these strategies to solve problems. Using sample survey method, four hundred students were taken for this investigation. Students’ achievement in solving problems was tested for their Identification and Application of Problem Solving Strategies as a major finding, thirty one percent of the students’ achievement in mathematics is contributed by Identification and Application of Problem Solving Strategies.

Preparing high school students for engineering disciplines is crucial for sustainable scientific and technological developments in the USA. This paper discusses a pre-college program, which not only exposes students to various engineering disciplines but also enables them to consider engineering as the profession. The four-week long &ldquo;Engineering Innovation (EI)&rdquo; course is offered every year to high school students by the center of outreach, Johns Hopkins University. EI program is designed to develop problem-solving skills through extensive hands-on engineering experiments. A team consisting of an instructor, generally a PhD in Engineering, and a teaching fellow, generally a high school science teacher, closely work with students to pedagogically inculcate basics of core engineering disciplines such as civil, mechanical, electrical, materials, and chemical engineering. EI values independent problem-solving skills and simultaneously promote the team spirit among students. A number of crucial engineering aspects such as professional ethics, communications, technical writing, and understanding of common engineering principles are inculcated among high school students via well-designed individual and group activities. This paper discusses the model of EI program and its impact on students learning and their preparation for the engineering career.
