The study aimed to investigate the Indonesian high school science learners’ Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE), which is a second language (L2) anxiety construct, Ought to L2 Self (OL2S), an L2 motivation construct, and the relationship between FNE and OL2S. The study employed a survey method with 190 learners from a private high school participating in it. Based on the descriptive statistics, the learners generally had a moderate level of FNE and OL2S. The FNE analysis showed that they had self-perception of low English competence and were afraid to speak without preparation. In OL2S, the analysis suggested that the learners believed that people around them did not consider their English mastery a priority. Through correlation formula, the study found a positive yet weak correlation between learners’ FNE and their OL2S. It suggested that the higher learners’ FNE, the higher they perceived responsibility to avoid negative outcomes. Besides, the finding also suggested that English instruction could be designed in such a way to attract the interest of learners from non-English language streams to give their best and promote active collaboration to lessen self-comparison among them. The limitations and contributions of the study were also discussed to provide possible directions for future studies.

The training was held for five days, from 22 to 26 June 2021 and was attended by ten junior high school science teachers in East Kalimantan. The indicators for the success of the activities were formulated: 1) 80% of participants or as many as 8 participants attended the training, 2) the implementation of all training activities, 3) 70% of participants or as many as 7 participants were able to do STEAM projects and compile reports, and 4) positive response from activity participants. The instruments used include pre-test and post-test questions on understanding STEAM-based learning and participant response questionnaires. Implementing the training activities includes 1) Preparation stage; 2) Implementation stage; 3) Monitoring, evaluation and reporting stages. The results of the evaluation show that the training activities achieved all indicators of activity success, namely: 1) all participants invited to attend the training were 10 participants, 2) all training activities were carried out according to schedule, 3) 80% of participants were able to do projects and compile reports, which amounted to 8 participants, and 4) a positive response was obtained from the activity participants, the results of the response questionnaire were in the very good category with a percentage of 95%.

AbstractIn this paper, we report ethnicity trends in student participation and experience in high school science and engineering fairs (science fairs). Science fair participation showed significant ethnic diversity. For survey students, the approximate distribution was Asian-32%; Black-11%; Hispanic-20%; White-33%; Other-3%. Black students made up only 4.5% of the students who participated in science fairs beyond the school-only level, whereas students from other ethnic groups were more equally represented. The lower percentage of Black students resulted from a combination of lower science fair participation and lower percentage of students advancing to science fairs beyond the school-only level. Students who advanced to science fairs beyond the school-only level frequently received help from scientists, coaching for the interview, and were not required to participate in science fair. Black students received the least help from scientists and were most likely to be required to do science fair. They also were most likely to receive no help from parents, teachers, or scientists. Asian and Hispanic students (63.8% and 56.8%) indicated greater interest in careers in science and engineering (S&E) compared to Black and White students (43.7% & 50.7%). The most important experiences that correlated with students indicating that science fair increased their interests in S&E were getting help from the internet and/or books and magazines; getting help fine tuning the report; and overcoming obstacles by doing more background research, making a timeline, and perseverance. Black students did not report a positive effect of any of these strategies but experienced time pressure as more of an obstacle than did other students. Our findings identify a wide range of student experiences associated with positive science fair outcomes that could be enhanced for all students but especially Black students. More involvement of scientists in helping science fair students would be particularly valuable.

Measuring the ability of teachers is part of the evaluation in the national education system. The development of the instrument in the form of essay questions has become an alternative because the instrument is considered to have better authenticity than the form of multiple choice questions. The implications of using the essay instrument were scored consistency and efficient resources. The purpose of this study was to examine the inter-rater reliability between the automated essay scoring system and human raters in measuring teachers’ knowledge using the essay instrument. The research was conducted randomly with 200 junior high school science teachers. The quantitative method design was applied to investigate the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and Pearson's correlation (r) as indicators of the ability of automated essay scoring (UKARA) that had been used. The main data in this study were test answers from participants in the form of limited essay answers that have been distributed online. The inter-rater reliability coefficient between the UKARA and the human rater in this study was in the high category (more than 0.7) for all items or means that the score given by UKARA has a strong correlation with the score given by human rater. These results mean that UKARA has adequate capability as an automated essay scoring system on the measurement of science teacher knowledge.

Abstract The development of Worksheets based on the STEM approach pays attention to the elements of writing, the hierarchy of materials, and the selection of questions as an efficient and effective stimulus. This research aims to produce Worksheets based on the STEM approach that meets the feasibility of improving students’ critical thinking skills. The development model in this research refers to the 4D (four-D) research and development model by taking sample data from high school science students in the former Besuki Residency, namely Jember, Situbondo, Banyuwangi, and Bondowoso Regencies. The research instrument uses tests, observations, and documentation. The research results show that Worksheets based on the STEM approach meet the valid, practical, and effective criteria for improving students’ critical thinking skills. This research implies that the availability of Worksheets is expected for students to research teaching materials independently. In Worksheet, students will get materials, summaries, and assignments related to the material.
