This research seeks to explore and reveal students' mathematical problem solving abilities by analyzing student answers. The research subjects were seventh grade students taken from a public junior high school in Purwakarta Regency. The results of the study show that students' mathematical problem solving ability is still very weak and far to be complete even though the level of difficulty of the instrument is in the medium category. In general, the ability of these study subjects in mathematical problem solving is still below 50%. It is time for teachers to apply problem-based learning, in addition to conventional learning models, to provide opportunities and experiences for students to see and experience mathematical problem solving in the classroom. This qualitative study exposes students' responses in dealing with story questions in a rectangular building material. In addition the students are given the questions shown to reveal whether the students are using a systematic solution or can answer directly without a sequence, judging by the ability to solve mathematical problems. There were 6 heterogeneous students who were the subjects in this study. Based on the analysis that has been done, the results obtained are (1) students answer the problem is not systematic, (2) lack of understanding of the sequence of problem solving, (3) students are too hasty in doing math problems.

Problem-solving and mathematical connections are two important things in learning mathematics, namely as the goal of learning mathematics. However, it is unfortunate that the ability of students 'mathematical connections is very low so that it impacts on students' failure in solving mathematical problems. The writing of this paper aims to discuss the understanding of mathematical problems, mathematical problem solving, mathematical connections, and how they play a role in solving mathematical problems. The method used in writing this paper is a method of studying literature, which is reinforced by the example of a qualitative research result. The research subjects consisted of two eighth grade students of junior high school in Jember East Java, Indonesia, in 2017/2018. The research data consisted of written test results solving the mathematical problem as well as interview results. Data analysis uses descriptive qualitative analysis. From the results of literature studies and research results provide a conclusion that mathematical connections play an important role, namely as a tool for students to use in solving mathematical problems where students who have good mathematical connection skills succeed in solving mathematical problems well, while poor mathematical connection skills cause students to fail in solving mathematical problems.

ABSTRACT Mathematical problem solving ability is one of the abilities that must be mastered by students in order to be able to mathematically solve problems often found in real life. Indicators of mathematical problem solving capabilities include being able to understand problems, plan problem solving strategies, perform strategies or procedures for problem solving, and check the truth of answers or results obtained. This study aims to determine the mathematical problem solving abilities of junior high school students in terms of Early Mathematical Ability (KAM). The method used in this study is descriptive. The research subjects were class VIII F Space Junior High School Sulaiman Air Base which numbered 30 people. The instrument used in the study was a test of the questions about the mathematical problem solving abilities of 5 questions. Analysis of the data used in this study is to classify students based on the results of the Middle Semester Assessment (PTS) as students' initial abilities. Students are divided into three groups, namely the upper KAM group, the middle KAM group and the lower KAM group. The results showed that students had difficulty working on the number 5 questions and both the upper KAM group students, the middle KAM and the lower KAM students, students did not master the 4th indicator, namely checking the correctness of the answers. Keywords: initial mathematical abilities, mathematical problem solving abilities.

This study aims to improve students’ mathematical problem-solving ability through the Problem-Based Learning Model in Fractions learning material at grade VII of Junior High School SMP Negeri 10 Gorontalo. This classroom action research (CAR) involved 25 students as the subject and were conducted collaboratively between the researcher and teachers. This research was carried out in two cycles, and the first and second cycle consisted of three meetings, respectively. The instruments applied were an observation sheet of the teacher’s ability to manage the Problem-Based Learning Model, the observation sheet of students’ activity using the model above, and the ability tests to solve mathematical problems in the Fraction material. Further, the data were collected from observation and written tests. The results show an enhancement of the teacher’s ability in managing the Problem-Based Learning model and students’ activity using this model and the outcomes of mathematical problem-solving skill in the fractions learning material from cycle I to cycle II. Therefore, this finding indicates that the Problem-Based Learning model can be accepted as an alternative in learning Fractions at the research site.

The purpose of this study was to describe the critical thinking process of junior high school students with choleric personalities in solving mathematical problems. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The subjects in this study were two students of MTs Hasanuddin Sidoarjo class VIII who had choleric personalities obtained from the results of personality tests. The research stages used by the researchers consisted of three stages, namely the preparation stage, the implementation stage, and the analysis stage. The data collection technique in this research is the technique of giving the Mathematical Problem Solving Test (TPMM) and interviews later to obtain valid and credible data, researchers use source triangulation. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that the choleric subject in solving mathematical problems shows the criteria for critical thinking: focus, reason, inference, situation, clarity, overview at the stage of understanding the problem. At the stage of making a plan for the completion of the choleric subject, it fulfills the criteria for critical thinking, focus, reason, inference, situation, clarity, overview. Likewise, at the stage of implementing the completion plan, the choleric subject meets the criteria for critical thinking, focus, reason, inference, situation, clarity, overview. Meanwhile, at the stage of re-examining the completion plan, the choleric subject only met the criteria for critical thinking, focus, reason, inference, situation, clarity, did not meet the criteria for critical thinking overview. Keywords: Critical Thinking, Mathematical Problem Solving, Choleric Personality
