Malaysia is a developing economy which is one of the corporate leaders in South East Asian countries. Practicing audit committee is mandatory for public listed firms in Malaysia according to Bursa Malaysia Listing Requirements as well Malaysian Code of Corporate Governance. The purpose of this paper is to examine the association between audit committee characteristics and firm performance among public listed firms in Malaysia. This study employed EVA as performance measurement tool. The sample is 75 firm year observations and covers fiscal years 2008-2010. The study found that audit committee independence is positively associated with firm performance while audit quality is negatively associated in Malaysia. Overall, audit committee characteristics have a positive effect on firm performance. This study contributes to the literature as well as in empirical evidence on audit committee characteristics and firm audit quality. The results suggest that Big 4 firms have a negative impact on value based measure in Malaysia.

Gender diversity is a new and challenging issue of research in business. Women on boards are a heavily discussed topic in developed countries, though this issue has recently appeared to gain the attention of researchers in developing economies as well. However, research on gender diversity in Malaysia is limited. This study aims to examine whether female directors on boards can affect firm performance based on selected public listed companies in Malaysia. In examining the effect of gender diversity on firm performance, Pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis tests are employed using economic value added (EVA) as a measurement tool. This study found no relationship between gender diversity and firm performance. Given this, future studies should try to consider other aspects of corporate governance.

This study is about examining the influence of Intellectual Capital and Corporate Governance to EVA. Data used in this study were collected from a sample of 121 consumer goods companies in Indonesia and Malaysia from 2010 to 2017. Panel data multiple regression was performed to examine the research framework. The intellectual capital was measured by VAIC value, while the corporate governance was explained by the audit committee, remuneration board, and auditor quality and tenure. This study found that HCE, SCE, audit committee gender, remuneration size and remuneration gender had no effect on EVA in both Malaysian and Indonesian companies. In contrast, the audit committee size was found to affect the EVA of the companies in both countries. The CEE affected the company value of Malaysian companies while it had no effect on Indonesian companies. Audit quality and audit tenure had a positive effect only on Malaysian companies and none on Indonesian companies. This study used limited variables and a narrow business sector, thus the future research may expand the research model for other types of industries and apply the model in other countries.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of intellectual capital (IC) on financial performance (FP) for Indian companies listed on the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy Overall Share Price Index (COSPI). Design/methodology/approach Hypotheses were developed according to theories and literature review. Secondary data were collected from Indian companies listed on the COSPI between 2001 and 2016, and the value-added intellectual coefficient (VAIC) of Pulic (2000) was used to measure IC and its components. A dynamic system generalized method of moments (SGMM) estimator was employed to identify the variables that significantly contribute to firm performance. Findings Indian listed firms appear to be performing well and efficiently utilizing their IC. Overall, human capital had a major impact on firm productivity during the study period. Furthermore, the empirical analysis showed that structural capital efficiency and capital employed efficiency were equally important contributors to firm’s sales growth and market value. The growing importance of the contribution of IC to value creation was consistently reflected in the FP of these Indian companies. Practical implications This study has robust theoretical grounds and employs a validated methodology. The present study extends knowledge of IC among academicians and managers and highlights its contribution to value creation. The findings may help stakeholders and policymakers in developing countries properly reallocate intellectual resources. Originality/value This study is the first study to evaluate IC and its relationship with traditional measures of firm performance among Indian listed firms using dynamic SGMM and VAIC models.

This  research  aims to find empirical evidence  about the impact  of  workload  and  audit tenure  on  audit quality  and  using audit  committee  as  a  moderating  variable. This  research  focused  on  manufacturing companies  that  listed  on  the  Indonesia Stock Exchange. Sample was collected using   purposive sampling method and resulted 31  companies as a final sample.  The  data are analyzed by using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The results of  this research indicate  that the  workload  has a negative  impact on  audit quality.  Audit tenure has a positive impact on audit quality. Audit committee reduces the negative impact of workload on audit quality. And audit committee reduces the positive impact of audit tenure on audit quality.

This paper investigates the effect of corporate governance practices on the extent of voluntary disclosure in France. Using a panel of 206 non-financial French listed firms during the period 20062009, we find evidence that voluntary disclosure in annual reports increases with managerial ownership, board and audit committee independence, board meeting frequency, and external audit quality. We also find that frequency of audit committee meetings and diligence of board and auditing are associated with decreased disclosure. Additional findings show that larger, more profitable, and less indebted firms have greater voluntary disclosure.

This study explores which metrics are considered important in measuring marketing performance in Turkish firms. In addition, the study examines the effects of sectoral differences and market dynamism, and the relationship between the importance attached to metrics and firm performance. The data collected from a sample of 145 Turkish firms via a structured questionnaire derived from the literature reveals that the most importance is attached to consumers’ attitudes metrics. Economic value added and customer lifetime value are the least important metrics in performance evaluation. No significant relationship occurs between the importance that executives attach to metrics and firm performance. Managerial implications and future research opportunities will be presented at the end. The study is, as far as is known, the first attempt at aiming to explore marketing metrics in Turkey, and one of a limited number of studies in emerging economies.

ABSTRACT This paper investigates how the presence of female directors on corporate boards impacts the performance of family firms. This study enriches the literature on gender diversity on corporate boards and its effects on firm performance by focusing on a country in which family businesses are dominant. The empirical analysis is conducted on a sample of 165 Italian-listed firms from 2011 to 2016, representing the period during which the mandatory gender quota law was introduced and implemented in Italy. The results show a positive relationship between the presence of women on corporate boards and firm performance, specifically in family owned businesses. These findings lead to the conclusion that female directors do not have a negative impact on firm performance. And, given the domination of family businesses and a mandatory gender quota law in Italy, this study makes a regulatory and performance assessment not previously examined in the literature. Compliance to tax payment generally results in mitigating fiscal deficit and public debt, and in turn, provides funding to meet the economic and social development. However, regardless of the directed efforts of the government to increase sales tax compliance (or value added tax as it is referred to globally), Jordanian listed firms on the Amman Stock Exchange, compliance remains an issue in light of its negative impact on the government revenues. Literature dedicated to tax rate effects on sales tax compliance in the context of listed Jordanian firms on the Amman Stock Exchange has largely been lacking and as such, the study’s main objective is to examine the effect of tax rate on sales tax compliance among such firms. The study adopted a survey method with questionnaire copies distributed to 191 listed Jordanian firms. In the tabulation of data, only 169 questionnaire copies were deemed to be valid for the analysis. The formulated study hypotheses were tested using PLS-SEM and based on the results, tax rate has an insignificant effect on sales tax compliance. Future studies are recommended to provide further insight into the study determinants. The study contributes by furnishing information to and guiding policymakers and the listed Jordanian firms in enhancing sales tax compliance.

This study analyses the relationship between gender diversity on the board of directors' executive roles and the firm economic value. Based on a sample of Portuguese non-financial listed firms, between 2010 and 2018, results show that executive female contribute to decrease the firm economic value-added, and CEO gender diversity to decrease market value added, while no impact is found to traditional performance measures. Since the presence of women on the board of Portuguese firms is still scarce, female presence is not seen as relevant to add value to firms. These results are pioneer since previous studies found no impact of female presence on boards on value added measures. Moreover, findings show the relevance of value-added measures to analyze performance and singularities compared to profitability measures.
