Purpose This paper aims to investigate the moderating influence of religiosity on the effect of taxpaying attitudes on the tax compliance behaviour of entrepreneurial firms in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach Using a cross-sectional survey design, we collected primary data from 368 owner managers of entrepreneurial firms in Southwest Nigeria using structured questionnaires. Respondents were purposefully selected based on the purposive sampling technique. The data collected with the structured questionnaires were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Two linear regression models were compared. Findings Estimations in Models 1 and 2 suggest that taxpayers’ attitudes and religiosity (intra- and interreligiosity) have significant effects on the tax compliance behaviour of firms, but the influence of intrareligiosity is insignificant. Estimations in Model 3 suggest that taxpaying attitudes without the moderating influence of religiosity exerted a significant effect on tax compliance behaviour by 13%, while taxpaying attitudes with the moderating influence of religiosity exerted 17%. Estimations in Model 4 suggest that taxpaying attitudes with the moderating influence of the interreligiosity dimension had a more significant contribution to the changes in tax compliance behaviour than the intrareligious dimension. Research limitations/implications From the findings, the following policy implications can be deduced: (i) if taxpayers’ attitudes improved and religiosity was leveraged by the tax authorities, tax compliance behaviour of entrepreneurial firms would be induced in Nigeria; (ii) the consistent positive influence is a strong indication that religious values are critical elements of tax compliance interventions that should be considered by policymakers when designing public policies on tax evasion and avoidance in developing countries. Originality/value We bridge the gaps in the literature because our study affirmed that taxes are religiously driven. In addition, the study validates the applicability of theory of planned behaviour in investigating the moderating influence of religiosity on the causality between taxpaying attitude and tax compliance in the developing context.

This research aims to look at the influence of Tax Knowledge, Tax Actionand Tax Compliance. Data collection techniques by disseminating questionnaires, while the data analyst method used is  inferenceal statistics,(inductive statistics  or  probability statistics),is a statistical technique used to analyze sample data and the results are applied topopulations (Sugiyono in Kalnadi 2013). In accordance with the hypothesis that has been formulated, then in this study the analysis of inferential statistical data is measured using  SmartPLS software  (PartialLeast Square)  ranging from model measurements (outermodels), the results of the study obtained a calculated  value  for Tax Knowledge (X1)is smaller  and sig t value for Tax Knowledge (X 1)  0.124  is greater than alpha   (0.05). Based on the results obtained then  receive  H0  and  reject  H1 for Tax Knowledge (X1). Thus, partially Tax Knowledge (X1)  has no positive and insignificant  effect on Tax Compliance (Y),  indicating Tax Knowledge (X1)does not have a positive impact in improving  Tax Compliance (Y). The results ofthe study obtained nilai tcalculated  for Tax Sanctions (X2)  of 2,759  greater than  sig  t value for Tax Sanctions (X2)  of  0.007  smaller than  alpha (0.05). Based on the results obtained, reject    H0  and  receive  H1. Thus partially Tax Sanctions (X2)have a positive and significant effect on Tax Compliance (Y), meaning tax sanctions (X2)have a real impact in improving tax compliance (Y).

Abstract The amount of revenue collected often determines a country's economic growth and development. Taxes continue to be one of the most important constituents in managing nationwide income in emerging and developed nations. In this sense, tax evasion might have serious effects, especially because the global cost of non-compliance by taxpayers is quite significant. Small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) are the backbone of economies around the world, driving economic progress and growth, as well as innovation and wealth creation. The high incidence of tax non-compliance among SMEs, on the other hand, stymies the progress that SMEs are meant to bring to many nations. Thus, the study aim at assessing the effects of taxation on economic development with its moderating role of tax compliance. The descriptive research design with quantitative approach was employed. The population of the study consist is 10,000 SMEs operating in Kumasi currently with a sample size of 400 SMEs. The instrument for data collection in this study was questionnaire. The data that was collected was analysed using SPSS. The findings demonstrated that in formulating strategies to enhance voluntary compliance, it is crucial for the relevant authorities to be aware of, understand and appreciate taxation taxpayers’ compliance behaviour and the need to provide tax education services. The results indicated that tax compliance enhanced the effectiveness of taxation to impact on economic development. The moderating role of tax compliance in the relationship between taxation and economic development was low but positive.

Tax compliance is a major contemporary debate surrounding corporate taxation in the business world. The tax avoidance issue, which remains an ethical problem for companies, has been a general concern in developed and developing countries alike. The main problem of this study is a non-tax compliance behavior of the corporate organization taxpayers in Nigeria. This study examined the influence of tax fairness on the tax compliance behavior of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The paper adopted a survey research method, and four hundred (400) copies of the questionnaire were administered to the selected manufacturing companies of both consumer and industrial goods sectors. The Laffer Curve Theory underpinned this study and Correlation Analysis, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Multiple Regression Analysis were also employed. The study found that there is a significant level of tax compliance among the listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study also shows that the corporate taxpayer’s perception of fairness of –2.765 (0.006) has a significant impact on corporate taxpayers’ willingness to pay taxes and tax knowledge of 4.601 (0.000) significantly influenced tax compliance. Based on tax knowledge, the study recommends that tax authorities must improve the knowledge of taxpayers and tax collection agents through programs, initiatives, and training on tax awareness.

This paper examined the mediating role of trust in government on the influence of public governance quality indicators (accountability, political stability, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption) on tax compliance in Africa. Cross-country data obtained from 38 African countries for 2015 was used and analyzed using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis. The study found that accountability, political stability, control of corruption, and trust have a significant influence on tax compliance among the sampled African countries, but government effectiveness, regulatory quality, and the rule of law and have insignificant influence on tax compliance. The result of the mediating effects revealed that trust mediates the influence of accountability and political stability on tax compliance in Africa. However, it failed to mediate the influence of government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption on tax compliance among sample African countries. The study offers theoretical insights on the role of trust as a mediator on social exchange relationships from the context of public governance quality on tax compliance. It also implies to the policymakers that building trust is an important mechanism through which the impact of public governance on tax compliance would be more pronounced. The study further calls for replication of its findings in other continents such as the Americas, Asia, and Europe.

AbstractAlthough naming-and-shaming (shaming) is a commonly used tax enforcement mechanism, little is known about the efficacy of shaming tax evaders. Through two experiments, this study examines the effects of shaming tax evaders on third-party observers’ perceptions of retributive justice and tax compliance intentions, and whether the salience of persuasion of observers moderates these relationships. Based on insights from defiance theory, the message learning model, and persuasive communications, this study predicts and finds that shaming evaders increases observers’ tax compliance intentions. Furthermore, the results show that higher persuasion, which includes sanction and normative appeals, affects observers’ tax compliance intentions. This study also suggests that shaming has a positive effect on perceptions of retributive justice. Importantly, the results reveal that perceptions of retributive justice in shaming punishment mediate the effect of shaming on tax compliance intentions. The implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Research on the impact of empathy as a non-economic factor on taxpayer compliance has not been studied in Indonesia. Most research still focuses on economic factors that affect tax compliance. To find out whether empathy affects tax compliance, this study uses binary logistic regression analysis because the dependent variable is nominal and categorical. The significance of the regression equation parameters was tested by the Ratio Likelihood Test and the Wald Test. Then, the goodness of fit model was tested using the Hosmer-Lemeshow Test. The likelihood ratio test shows that there is at least one coefficient from the regression model that has an effect on the 5% significance level. Based on the Wald test, there is no independent variable that has a significant effect on tax compliance with a 5% significance level. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test states that the binary logistic regression model in this study is feasible to use. Binary logistic regression analysis shows that only one predictor has a significant effect on the tax compliance variable, namely empathic concern items. The odds ratio value of 1.054 on the empathic concern items variable shows that taxpayers who have empathy will be 1.054 times more tax compliant than respondents who do not have empathy. In other words, respondents who have empathy will tend to be more obedient in paying taxes than those who do not have this trait. Therefore, the government can formulate regulations that support the emergence of empathic concern items in the community so that tax compliance increases.
