During the evaluation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) from 2000 to 2015, it was discovered that there was no country managed to meet the envisioned goal of eradicating poverty. However, it was observed that China is the only country that managed to half its poverty levels. Just like other developing countries, South Africa is one of the countries whose performance in the attainment of the first goal of MDGs was not satisfactory. Through the utilization of secondary data in a qualitative approach, this paper argues that South Africa can perform better if it can learn and follow the strategies used by China to shrink its poverty levels. The study shows that China mostly supports State Owned Enterprises, which make the economy to grow and help in poverty alleviation. For that reason, the study recommends that in order for South Africa to attain the poverty eradication goal by 2030 more SOEs have to be established.

This chapter examines important lessons for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Nigeria. It first provides a synoptic overview of MDG implementation in Nigeria before discussing the socio-economic and political challenges associated with achieving the MDGs in the country as well as the some of the efforts made by Nigerian governments at different levels to achieve the MDGs in the face of such challenges. It then outlines three major imperatives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria by 2030 and concludes with some recommendations for overcoming the current challenges in relation to future poverty reduction and development strategies in the country. The chapter argues that Nigeria made little progress with respect to the MDGs, which were characterised by considerable stasis and undeniable reversals in some parts of the country.

Exterminating poverty and inequality is a present challenge that the SDGs want to overcome. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) itself is a continuation of the previous platform of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which was designed by the United Nations and agreed upon by 193 countries. SDGs applied with universal principles, integrity, and inclusive to ensure that all  arties can involve without exception, with the name No One Left Behind. The SDGs have 17 goals and 169 achievement targets,  hich expected to realize in 2030. Zakat contribution to support SDGs is also supported by Law No. 23 of 2011 concerning Management of Zakat, which states that zakat is a religious institution that aims to improve justice and welfare of the community. Besides, specifically in Article 3 of the same Act, it explains that the management of zakat intended; 1) Increase the effectiveness and efficiency of services in the management of zakat, 2) Increase the benefits of zakat to realize community welfare and poverty reduction.

Zakat as a wealth distribution mechanism has an impact on reducing poverty as the most important point in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). An important role can be played by zakat institutions in reducing poverty levels, especially zakat institutions in regions in Indonesia. This study aims to explain the mechanism of zakat as an instrument of Islamic economy in order to contribute to the achievement of SDGs in Aceh Province by optimizing the role of the Aceh Baitul Mal. With the grounded research method, this research is carried out by collecting data through interviews with academics of Islamic studies, Islamic boarding school scholars and zakat practitioners who are competent to assess the role of zakat in poverty alleviation in Aceh. The results showed that to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) Baitul Mal Aceh must optimize zakat as a transfer of wealth from muzakki to mustahik, both optimizing the collection and optimizing the distribution of zakat. Optimization of zakat collection is carried out by means of education, socialization, and good zakat services, while optimization of distribution is carried out by prioritizing zakat for poverty alleviation programs, ensuring the accuracy of zakat recipients, and distribution using consumptive and productive methods. The participation of organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) is crucial at each stage of policy processes at the local, regional, and international levels. However, decision-making mechanisms have traditionally excluded OPDs, failing to consult with them on decisions that impact on their daily lives. The overall aim of this study was to examine the participation of persons with disabilities and OPDs in development programmes and policies by exploring recommendations from a sample of OPDs on ways to strengthen their participation with government and the UN. Secondary data analysis was conducted using a global survey on the participation of OPDs, administered by the International Disability Alliance to OPD representatives. Two open-ended items were analysed, which explored participants’ recommendations on ways to strengthen their participation with government and the UN. Data were analysed using the descriptive and interpretive qualitative methods. Respondents provided recommendations on how to strengthen their participation with their national government and the UN, focusing on several issues including accessibility, human rights, and the need for inclusion of all OPDs and all groups of persons with disabilities. The synergy between the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Sustainable Development Goals presents opportunities for OPDs to increase their participation in development policies and programmes. It is vital, however, to dismantle the barriers to participation in decision-making by OPDs and persons with disabilities.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted during the United Nations meeting in 2015 to succeed Millennium Development Goals. Among the health targets, SDG 3.2 is to end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age by 2030. These 2 targets aim to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1000 live births and under-5 mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1000 live births. Ethiopia is demonstrating a great reduction in child mortality since 2000. In the 2019 child mortality estimation which is nearly 5 years after SDGs adoption, Ethiopia’s progress toward reducing the newborns and under-5 mortality lie at 27 and 50.7 per 1000 live births, respectively. The generous financial and technical support from the global partners have helped to achieve such a significant reduction. Nevertheless, the SDG targets for newborns and under-5 mortality reduction are neither attained yet nor met the national plan to achieve by the end of 2019/2020. The partnership dynamics during COVID-19 crisis and the pandemic itself may also be taken as an opportunity to draw lessons and spur efforts to achieve SDG targets. This urges the need to reaffirm a comprehensive partnership and realignment with other interconnected development goals. Therefore, collective efforts with strong partnerships are required to improve the determinants of child health and achieving SDG target reduction until 2030.

There is no gainsaying the fact that one of the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals is to end poverty in all its form by 2030. However, the continuous increase in poverty level has generated a lot of debates among policymakers and scholars while government keeps formulating policies to avert the situation. Thus, with SDGs in view, the study took into cognizance the MDGs before it and what hindered it from the full actualisation of its goal, specifically MD Goal 1a “eradicate extreme poverty”. Using quantitative data, the study examined the implementation of MDGs and pinpointed the factors that affected the implementation of the MDG poverty reduction strategy. These factors include corruption, lack of awareness, politics of poverty, non-poor targeted, etc. On this basis, the paper suggests that, if Ogun State will achieve SDG1 by 2030, factors such as good leadership, identification of the poor, awareness and infrastructural opportunities will need to be addressed.

Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was implemented in 2000 ostensibly to accelerate development within its 15 years plan of action. In the credence of this notion, Nigeria was one of the early countries that adopted the rational policy. Prior to the introduction of MDG, the country had implemented diverse developmental policies which are said not to have delivered the expected dividend. Hence, no sooner, the MDGs came to an end; the impulse of another developmental goal became necessary. Sustainable development Goals (SDGs) succeeding MDGs reiterates questions such as, how well did MDGs perform in developing countries? Where the aims of the MDGs met? If MDGs struggle to achieve 8 goals, how possible will SDGs 17 goals be realized? It is in this light, that the study using secondary data evaluate the MDG era in Nigeria, how far and how well they achieved their set target. The study suggests that although MDGs era in Nigeria recorded slight progress with regards to targeted goals, it did not meet the required plausible targets. Hence, as a very effective way of achieving sustainable development, the study recommends good governance and prioritizing of goals according to the country needs.
