Zakat as a wealth distribution mechanism has an impact on reducing poverty as the most important point in achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). An important role can be played by zakat institutions in reducing poverty levels, especially zakat institutions in regions in Indonesia. This study aims to explain the mechanism of zakat as an instrument of Islamic economy in order to contribute to the achievement of SDGs in Aceh Province by optimizing the role of the Aceh Baitul Mal. With the grounded research method, this research is carried out by collecting data through interviews with academics of Islamic studies, Islamic boarding school scholars and zakat practitioners who are competent to assess the role of zakat in poverty alleviation in Aceh. The results showed that to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) Baitul Mal Aceh must optimize zakat as a transfer of wealth from muzakki to mustahik, both optimizing the collection and optimizing the distribution of zakat. Optimization of zakat collection is carried out by means of education, socialization, and good zakat services, while optimization of distribution is carried out by prioritizing zakat for poverty alleviation programs, ensuring the accuracy of zakat recipients, and distribution using consumptive and productive methods. Keywords: zakat collection, zakat distribution, SDGs

The article analyses the importance of an active role of the state in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Its starting point is that despite the fact that today there is a growing recognition in the world that for the implementation of sustainable development an active role of the state and local self-governing communities is indispensable and despite the fact that in Slovenia such a role of the state in implementing sustainable development stems from its Constitution, so far, too little has been done in Slovenia to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The purpose of this article is to analyse theoretical arguments and the Constitution in order to show the need for an active role of the state in implementing sustainable development goals, and also to discuss basic steps to be implemented in order to achieve an active role of the state in Slovenia. In this article comparative and analytical methods were used in studying the literature and regulation. The article, based on theoretical arguments and the constitutional analysis, identifies the need for an active role of the state in implementing sustainable development goals, and proposes arguments for it and also basic steps toward an active role of the state. The discussed topic is new and this article contributes to the field some fundamental arguments for the active role of state and for the more comprehensive policy-making. The article offers theoretical and constitutional arguments to be implemented in order to transform the present role of the state from a passive one into an active role and its findings are meant to be used by policy-makers and law-makers as a significant argument to pursue more active role of the state in implementing sustainable development goals.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between business and sustainable development, particularly the role of multinational enterprises (MNEs) as possible driving force for achieving sustainability. By following an inductive case study approach and referring to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, the sustainable undertakings of the Chinese MNE Huawei are explored. Published data on Huawei’s website and online resources like annual reports, news announcements, sustainability and corporate social responsibility reports are used for this purpose. The main findings indicate that Huawei can promote sustainable development internationally on three different levels: (1) products/services, (2) business operations and (3) social contributions. Based on these findings, a systematic framework is derived to help illustrate possible and classify existing MNE’s sustainability activities, as well as the related main stakeholders. This paper is useful for scholars and practitioners alike as it shows the compatibility of success in business with sustainability, as well as the potential of MNEs to contribute to sustainable development. Keywords: Sustainable Development Goals, business, multinational enterprises, emerging markets
