In this study, the deposition of three heavy metals (Cu, Fe and Hg) in four moss taxa (Bryum argenteum, Bryum capillare, Brachythecium sp. and Hypnum cupressiforme) in the county of Obrenovac (Serbia) is presented. The distribution of average heavy metal content in all mosses in the county of Obrenovac is presented on maps, while long-term atmospheric deposition (in the mosses Bryum argenteum and B. capillare) and short-term atmospheric deposition (in the mosses Brachythecium sp. and Hypnum cupressiforme) are discussed and given in a table. Areas of the highest contaminations are highlighted.

Determination of heavy metal deposition in forests by use of modelling and moss biomonitoring Atmospheric deposition of elements such as heavy metals, to which environmental systems are exposed, can be determined by means of technical samplers, biological samplers such as moss and deposition modelling. This article aims at comparing heavy metal deposition as computed by two chemical transport models with empiric measurements of respective concentrations in moss collected in 2005. For Cd and Pb, the correlations (Spearman) were between 0.31 and 0.81 across Europe and across Germany. Thereby, highest correlations were determined for specific land use classes. For As, Cr, Cu, Ni, V and Zn lower correlations were found. It could be shown that heavy metals emission inventories should be complemented by spatial and ecosystem type-specific biomonitoring with moss and modelling at high spatial resolution. This should apply even if emission and atmospheric deposition of heavy metal are low since heavy metals are persistent and, therefore, accumulate in ecosystems.

Determination of  heavy  metal  content  (Hg, Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr, Zn) in some seafoods collected from  Muara  Angke  Fish  Auction  Place  were carried out during February to July 1979. The results showed  that Zn  content  in seafoods a nalyzed  was always much higher than the other heavy metals. The concentration levels of  the  six  heavy  metals observed were low. It is almost of the same level as the metal concentration of  other  seafoods  observed  in various parts of the world oceans, but still lower  than the maximum standard set  for human  consumption  as  established  by   Tasmania, Australia and  World Health Organization. The  mean  per capita  consumption of  fish  in Jakarta is only  about 165 g  per week, while  the  Provisional Tolerated Weekly Intake for Hg, set by WHO/FAO at 300 ug level, would be attained by consuming 1500 g Rastrelliger sp., or 698 gPenaeus setiferus, or 545 g Sepia sp., and or 1250 g Pecten sp.  Therefore,  at   present the  level of metal content in fishes sold at TPI  Muara  Angke  can be  considered  as  not  dangerous  to human health as long as these quantities are not surpassed.

Nowadays, the use of formalin as a preservative in fish is often found in society. Besides, the consumption of fresh fish products containing heavy metals will potentially cause various diseases both short and long-term. The aims of this study were to assess the knowledge of society about formalin, detect the presence of formalin, and analyze the heavy metal content of Pb, Cd, and Hg in Yellow striped fish, Tuna and Mackerel fish. The qualitative detection was done using Schiff reagents, while the quantitative detection was done by using the Spectrophotometry based on the reaction of formaldehyde and Nash reagents. The results showed that 50 percent of society did not know about the use of formaldehyde and its characteristics in fish. The Qualitative testing on 9 samples found that 2 samples contained positive formalin, while 7 samples were negative. The quantitative test showed that the highest formalin content was found in Tuna and Mackerel fish with concentration of 3.36 ppm, and 1.26 ppm, respectively. Also, mercury was found as the highest concentration in fish roughly 1 to 1.60 ppm for those samples from three different markets.                                                                                                                                                 Keywords: formalin, heavy metal, fresh fish, market, Kupang city

The objective of the study was the determination of the characteristics and the potential of remediation As polluted soil of three different biochars and straws. Results showed that biochar has better properties and microstructure for heavy metals remediation. Short-term incubation remediation experiments showed that biochars could decreased biological toxicity and mobility of As.

Heavy metal toxicity can either be acute or chronic effects. Long-term exposure of the body to heavy metal can progressively lead to muscular, physical and neurological degenerative process. In this research, a total of 30 representative chocolate samples were collected from local shops and markets in Lahore. All the samples were analysed to assess the levels of Lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr) and Cadmium (Cd) by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer in Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR), Lahore. It was observed that the majority of chocolate samples contain heavy metals levels higher than the permissible limits as recommended by Punjab Food Rules (PFR) 2011. The levels of Pb ranged between 0.375 and 3.4 mg/kg with 90% samples having concentrations exceeding PFR allowable limit (0.5 mg/kg). Whereas, Ni concentrations varied from 0.005 to 0.28 mg/kg and 80% samples were above the PFR limit (0.025 mg/kg). Further, Cr levels analysed between 0.005 to 0.28 mg/kg and 53% samples had Cr concentrations higher than PFR limit (0.02 mg/kg). Similarly, Cd levels were observed between 0.50-3.25 mg/kg with 53% samples having Cd concentrations exceeding the PFR limit (1.0 mg/kg). Investigation indicates that the quality of available chocolates is not recommendable for eating because of the higher concentrations of toxic heavy metals.

Abstract The aim of this study was to identify a suitable lichen species for the long−term monitoring of heavy−metal atmospheric pollution in Svalbard. Cladonia and Cetraria s.l. species that have been widely used until now for assessing heavy−metal deposition in the Arctic are in decline over extensive areas of Svalbard, mainly due to climate change and over−grazing by reindeer. Cetrariella delisei, rarely used for biomonitoring, is still common and widespread in this area. Levels of Cr, Ni, Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and Mn were measured in three lichen species: Cetrariella delisei, Cladonia uncialis, Flavocetraria nivalis and in a moss Racomitrium lanuginosum from Sørkapp Land, South Spitsbergen. The results imply that Cetrariella delisei can be safely compared to Cladonia uncialis for identifying the levels of heavy metals, but direct comparison between Cetrariella delisei and other species studied is more difficult owing to differences in levels of heavy metals even in samples from the same site.
