The world economic crisis that paralyzed the world economy in 2008 and 2009 had a profound impact on all countries in the world. Due to the interconnectedness of national economies the crisis spread rapidly from its centre in the United States to the world. There were two main transmission channels for the spread of the crisis between countries - international trade and the exchange of private capital between states in the form of foreign direct investment (FDI). This economic downturn has greatly influenced the domestic economic stability of the Western Balkan economies. The Western Balkan countries have shaped their economic policy towards European Union (EU) membership, resulting in a high degree of liberalization in international economic relations accompanied by a commitment to free international capital movement. Since this region has close economic ties with the EU the crisis spread to the region very quickly, manifesting itself in decreasing regional exports to the EU market and a downward trend of FDI inflow to the region. This paper will focus on the impact of the world economic crisis on the Western Balkan economies and especially on their exports and FDI inflow. Our empirical analysis, based on panel data, uses a wider sample of Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) which includes the Western Balkans, since we wanted to analyze if the effects of the economic crisis in the Western Balkans are specific or are common to most countries in transition. The analysis shows that Western Balkan exports have suffered due to the crisis, but reveals some interesting results on the different dynamics of export flows which depend on regional trade integration for their destination.

The article examines how the deepening of the world economic crisis impacts global financial flows and performance of international financial institutions, with focus on two issues: 1) did the decrease of the Euro means the beginning of the global currency war?; 2) is there any sort of banks? ?conspiracy? in the world gold market? Long-term financial crisis demands a decisive reform measure to mend the functioning and structure of the IMF, World Bank Group and other global and regional financial institutions. This means that the outcome of their policies has been inadequate, so far, and that their role is subjected to a critical observation in finding an efficient performance of financial markets. Beijing is becoming more generous lender for a large number of the low-performing countries, offering them the significant support in Yuans due to Chinese geopolitical interests. China and Russia in the field of economic development are strongly complemented: the scope of cooperation is very broad, and there is a strong potential for the establishment of other world currencies, which would suppress the U.S. dollar as the dominant currency in global commodity and financial transactions. The authors conclude that the struggle to increase the competitiveness of the national state, at the expense of others, continues in the era of the deepest global financial crisis.

A tanulmány fő célja a gazdasági világválság termelésre gyakorolt hatásainak bemutatása volt a versenyképesség-kutatás adatainak elemzésével. Mivel a vállalatokra a válság különbözőképpen hat, ezért érintettségük alapján a szerzők három csoportba sorolták őket. A válság egyik vállalatcsoportnál sem eredményezte a megmaradó munkaerő fejlesztésének ugrásszerű növekedését. A folyamatfejlesztés erősödése, illetve a globális irányba mozdulás csak a legkevésbé érintett csoportnál volt jellemző. ___________________ The objective of this article is to describe the impact of the world economic crisis on operations using the data of the competitiveness survey. Since the crisis affects companies differently, the authors classified them into three groups: the most affected, the moderately affected and the least affected group, accordingly. Relying on the literature they formed hypotheses about the impact of crisis on operations strategy and its everyday operational consequences. Based on the authors’ results the most affected companies have the most stable operations strategy and practices. Nevertheless, due to the crisis the importance of prices and services increased, while the importance of innovation decreased in each group. At the level of everyday practice the crisis has not led to extraordinary increase in work force development. Process improvement and turning to globalization became stronger only in the least affected group.

In the second half of 2008, significant impacts of the world economic crisis became evident in the Czech labour market. In 2009, employment and the number of vacancies gradually declined and the number of the unemployed continually increased. This paper aims to show the impact of the crisis on the development (2008–2009) of the structure of employment according to industries and sectors of national economy in South Moravia as revealed by the unique “Survey of Employment in the South Moravian Region on the date of 31 December 2009”. This paper is a presentation of the general parameters of this survey – the number of companies participating in this survey, the number of their employees and regional differences of these characteristics are evaluated. Brief attention is also paid to the expected development of employment in 2010, which is compiled on the basis of the assumed recruitment/release of employees of businesses participating in the survey.
