Essential oils from leaves with young branches of Cotinus coggygria Scop. from two localities in Serbia (Deliblatska pescara and Zemun), obtained by hydrodistillation, were analyzed by GC-MS. Thirty-one component were identified from both oils and among them monoterpenic hydrocarbons were the dominant class (87.4 and 93.1 %). The dominant constituent in both essential oils was limonene (47.0 and 39.2 %). Both oils were also tested for antibacterial and antifungal activities. In comparison to streptomycin, both oils showed slightly higher activity (against most Gram-positive bacteria) in the disc diffusion method and slightly lower activity when the microdilution method was employed. They also exhibited antifungal potential higher than that of the commercial fungicide bifonazole.

Abstract The aim of study was to determine the antimicrobial activity of ten essential oils against ten microorganisms isolated from fish. The following essential oils were tested: Cymbopogon nardus Rendle, Citrus limon, Leptospermum petersonii Bailey, Gaultheria procumbens, Pelargonium graveolens, Citrus paradisi, Citrus aurantifolia, Litsea cubeba Pers., Citrus reticulata Blanko, Vetiveria zizanoides. The disc diffusion method and microdilution method were used for determination of antimicrobial activity. Rhodotorula spp., Aerococcus spp., Aerococcus viridans, Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus moraviensis, Aeromonas spp., Delftia acidovorans, Pseudomonas gessardii, Yersinia spp., Yersinia ruckeri, Yersinia enterocolitica were tested in the present study. The best antimicrobial activity of Leptospermum petersonii Bailey were found against Aerococcus spp., Enterococcus faecium, E. moraviensis, Delftia acidovorans, Pseudomonas gessardii, Yersinia ruckeri and Y. enterocolitica. Litsea cubeba Pers. was effective against Delftia acidovorans, Yersinia enterocolitica, Enterococcus faecium using the disc diffusion method. The best minimal inhibition concentration (MIC 50 - 1.5 µL/mL resp. MIC 90 - 1.6 µL/mL) was found for Litsea cubeba Pers. against Aerococcus spp. and Yersinia spp. using microdilution method.

Two new manumycin-type derivatives named as cornifronin A and cornifronin B, and one known analogue antibiotic SW-B were isolated from the liquid fermentation of Streptomyces sp. OC1401 obtained from body surface of a meson bee Osmia cornifrons. The structures of all isolates were identified by spectroscopic methods (HRESIMS, IR, 1D and 2D NMR) and comparison with literature data. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of these manumycin-type derivatives were evaluated by disc diffusion method and more accurate data on the antibacterial activity were obtained through the MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) and MBC (Minimal bactericidal concentration) values.

AbstractCertain phenolics have been recognized to possessing antibacterial and antifungal activities and high levels of flavonoids and tannins have been reported in several varieties of Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. Antimicrobial activity and phenolics contents were investigated in five Algerian sorghum seeds. AS20 sorghum extract showed the highest levels of: total phenolics (3214.46±263.64 mg/100 g), flavonoids (32.03±1.64 mg/100 g) and tannins (615.35±6.10 mg/g) contents; however, comparable flavonoids content was recorded in I27 extract. FZ40 and AS12 flavonoids contents were comparable. Screening for antimicrobial activity, carried out by the disc’s diffusion method revealed an antimicrobial potential of sorghum crude extracts against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and candida albicans yeast. Minimal inhibition concentration determined by microdilution method varied between 0.2 and 2 mg/ml. the lowest value was recorded with F11 and FZ40 extract against Streptococcus pneumoniae and F11 against Escherichia coli. Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus ATTCC6538 and MRSA strains showed sensitivity to all extracts. The results show these sorghums as a potential source of natural anti-streptococcal, anti-staphylococcal and anti-candida substances.

Four novel Mn(II), Co(II), Cu(II) complexes with nitrogen containing ligand (L) i.e. N,N-((Z)-ethane-1,2-diylidine)bis(2-amino benzo hydrazide) have been synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, spectral, thermal (TG/DTG), molar conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. From the spectroscopic and magnetic studies it has been concluded that all complexes have a six coordinated octahedral geometry. The Schiff base and their metal complexes have also been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities by using a modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method.

Abstract More than 85% yield of (E)-1,2,3-triphenylprop-2-en-1-ones were synthesized using disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4) catalyzed ultrasound assisted aldol condensation of 1,2-diphenylethanone and various substituted benzaldehydes. Synthesized (E)-1,2,3-triphenylprop-2-en-1-ones were examined by their spectroscopic data, yield, micro analysis and physical constants. The effect of solvent on the yield was investigated. The pharmacological effects such as antibacterial and antifungal activities of synthesized enones were evaluated with Bauer-Kirby disc diffusion method.

Abstract Essentials oils have been used over time in the food and cosmetics industry, but also in the medical and pharmaceutical industry. Environmental factors such as temperature, radiation and photoperiod play an extremely important role in the quantity and quality of volatile oils. It is also known that the vegetation stage can play an important role in the chemical composition of volatile oils. The purpose of this paper is to establish the antibacterial and antifungal activity of volatile oils of Thymus pannonicus, taking into account the ontogenetic stage in which the plants were collected, highlighting the compounds of therapeutic importance. To test the antimicrobial activity of essential oils two methods of work were used: Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method and microplate method. The essential oils studies were tested on Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Candida albicans. It was find that all essential oils tested have antimicrobial activity at all stages of development tested. The maximum antimicrobial activity has been recorded for the oils extracted from individuals collected at the anthesis stage.

The essential oil from the aerial parts of Stachys cretica L. subsp. smyrnaea Rech. fil. (Lamiaceae), endemic to Turkey, was investigated by using GC and GC-MS. Thirty-four of 37 components, represented 99.7% of the total oil, were identified. The major components of the essential oil were trans-β-caryophyllene (51.0%), germacrene-D (32.8%), α-humulene (3.1%), δ-cadinene (2.1%) and δ-elemene (2.1%). The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil, trans-β-caryophyllene and five different extracts of the aerial parts of S. cretica L. subsp. smyrnaea were investigated by the standard disc diffusion method. The essential oil and trans-β-caryophyllene exhibited antibacterial and antifungal activities. The activity increased with increasing concentrations of the essential oil and the extracts. The essential oil showed antimicrobial activity, particularly against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis. The extracts exhibited either moderate or no activity.

Triazoles and triazoles with different substituent groups are found to possess diverse application in the  field of medicine and industry. A series of 4-(substituted) ethanoylamino-3-mercapto-5-(4-substituted) phenyl-1,2,4-  triazoles were synthesized as novel antimicrobial agents starting from different 4-substituted benzoic acids. The  chemical structures of these newly synthesized compounds were elucidated by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FAB+-mass  spectral data and elemental analyses. The antimicrobial activity of title compounds were examined against two gram  positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis), two gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli,  Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and three fungi (Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger and Fusarium oxysporum) using disc  diffusion method. <p>The purpose of this study was to assess <em>in vitro</em> the activity of four essential oils (<em>Cymbopogon citratus, Eucalyptus citriodora, Lippia multiflora, Melaleuca quinquenervia</em>) and the biobactericide Neco® on Gram-positive bacteria.</p><p><strong>T</strong>he aromatogram and antibiogram were assessed by the agar well diffusion method and the Muller Hinton disk-agar diffusion method, respectively. Also, the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum bactericidal concentration were determined by the microdilution method in liquid medium.</p><p>The aromatogram showed that the biobactericide Neco® induced the largest inhibition diameters (34.53 ± 11.82 - 43.92 ± 5.38 mm) of all strains combined, followed by the essential oils of <em>Eucalyptus Citriodora</em> (30.01 ± 3.02 - 41.89 ± 1.77 mm) and <em>Lippia multiflora</em> (20.72 ± 4.72 - 37.61 ± 2.80 mm). However, the essential oils of <em>Melaleuca quinquenervia</em> (19.99 ± 3.93 - 26.20 ± 13.27 mm) and <em>Cymbopogon citratus</em> (13.52 ± 3.59 - 29.08 ± 2.35 mm) had the smallest inhibition diameters. Moreover, the comparison of the activities of the aromatogram and antibiogram revealed generally that activities were higher with essential oils than with antibiotics.</p><p>At the end of this study, the essential oils of <em>Cymbopogon citratus</em>, <em>Eucalyptus citriodora, Lippia multiflora, Melaleuca quinquenervia</em> and the biobactericide Neco® had an antibacterial activity on Gram+ bacteria.</p><p><strong><br /></strong></p>

Possible antimicrobial properties of essential oils isolated from Tanacetum vulgare L., and Salvia officinalis L., harvested from five different locations in Slovakia, were examined using the disc agar diffusion method and by the microdilution method. GC/MS analysis of the essential oil from Tanacetum vulgare L. resulted in the identification of 16 compounds constituting 82.1% of the total oil. Gram-positive bacteria, mainly Bacillus subtilis, were more susceptible to essential oils from both plants than were gramnegative species. Tested essential oils posses also anti-yeast activity. The shares of the constituents in the essential oils as well as their antimicrobial activity differed in dependence on the locality.
