Four novel Mn(II), Co(II), Cu(II) complexes with nitrogen containing ligand (L) i.e. N,N-((Z)-ethane-1,2-diylidine)bis(2-amino benzo hydrazide) have been synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, spectral, thermal (TG/DTG), molar conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. From the spectroscopic and magnetic studies it has been concluded that all complexes have a six coordinated octahedral geometry. The Schiff base and their metal complexes have also been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities by using a modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method.

Two new manumycin-type derivatives named as cornifronin A and cornifronin B, and one known analogue antibiotic SW-B were isolated from the liquid fermentation of Streptomyces sp. OC1401 obtained from body surface of a meson bee Osmia cornifrons. The structures of all isolates were identified by spectroscopic methods (HRESIMS, IR, 1D and 2D NMR) and comparison with literature data. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of these manumycin-type derivatives were evaluated by disc diffusion method and more accurate data on the antibacterial activity were obtained through the MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) and MBC (Minimal bactericidal concentration) values.

Novel metal complexes of Co(II) and Ni(II) have been  prepared from reaction of their different salts with previously prepared ligand (L) namely (N,N'-(1,2-phenylene)bis(2-aminobenzamide). Synthesis ligand and its metal (II) complexes (1-5) were reported and characterized with the help of analytical and physiochemical analysis as elemental, IR spectra, thermal (TG/DTG), UV-Vis, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductance in DMF, On the view of the previous data and measurements, the structure and composition species behave as mononuclear and octahedral geometry has been proposed for all the complexes except for complex (1) adopted tetrahedral structure. Furthermore, the in vitro antibacterial Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) as Gram-positive strain, Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) as Gram-negative strain and antifungal Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) have been studied for all samples using disc diffusion method against Ampicillin and Fluconazole as positive controls, respectively. The results show that complexation facilitates the activity of most studied metal complexes than the free ligand.

Indole motifs are one of the most significant scaffolds in the discovery of new drugs. We have described a synthesis of new N-substituted indole derivatives (1-3), and their in vitro antimicrobial activities were investigated. The synthesis of titled compounds has been demonstrated by utilizing commercially available starting materials. The antibacterial and antifungal activities were performed using new strains of bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans using the disc diffusion method. Notably, the compound 4-(1-(2-(1H-indol-1-yl) ethoxy) pentyl)-N,N-dimethyl aniline (1) was found to be most potent than the other analogues (2 and 3), which has shown higher inhibition than the standard drug chloramphenicol.

The chemical composition of the essential oil of Saccocalyx satureioides Coss. et Dur. (Lamiaceae) was analyzed by chiral and achiral GC/MS and 42 components were identified. The main constituents were (+)-α-terpineol (35.9%), thymol (15.6%) and borneol (12.4%). The in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities of the essential oil were assessed by the disc diffusion method, and were significant on the six microorganisms tested. A moderate inhibitory activity against hepatitis C virus polymerase was also evidenced.

New metal complexes of Mg(II), VO(II), Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pd(II) with cyanex 301(L) i.e., bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) dithiophosphinic acid were synthesized. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, molecular mass determination, magnetic measurements, infrared and electronic spectral studies. The prepared metal complexes have the compositions: 2. [MgL2].H2O, 3. [VOL2], 4. K[MnL3].H2O, 5. [FeL3], 6. K[CoL3].H2O, 7. K[NiL3], 8. K[CuL3] and 9. [PdL2]. The complexes 2, 3 and 9 are assumed to have tetrahedral, square pyramidal and square planar geometries, respectively but the complexes 4 - 8 are octahedral based on experimental data. From magnetic measurements the complexes 2 and 9 are found to be diamagnetic and others are paramagnetic. Measured molar conductance showed that the complexes 2, 3, 5 and 9 are non-electrolytes and rest are electrolytes. Besides, some complexes have shown good antibacterial and antifungal activities. Mixed ligand (diphenic/ adipic as primary Ligand and quinoline / 8 - hydroxyquinoline as secondary) transition metal complexes of Cobalt (II), Cupper (II), Rhodium (III) and Platinum (IV) ions were synthesized and characterized. Their antibacterial activities against ten bacteria had been evaluated by the disc diffusion method,whilst their antifungal activities against two fungi had been also evaluated by the same method. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) had been evaluated against six bacteria. The MIC of the complexes against Shigella dysenteriae, Samonella typhi, Streptococcus-β-haemolyticus and Bacillus megaterium were 32 μg/ml; whilst Escherichia coli and Samonella typhi-A the MIC of Co (II) and Pt (IV) were 32μg/ml and those of Cu(II) and Rh(III) complexes were 64 μg/ml. It was found that Cobalt (II), Cupper (II) & Rhodium (III) complexes had pronounced antibacterial and antifungal activities. Platinum (IV) complex had moderate antibacterial and antifungal activity. These values indicate that these are active compounds. Four novel binuclear copper(II) complexes [1–4] of (2E)-2-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)-4N-substituted hydrazinecarbothioamides, (OH)(OCH3)C6H4CH=NNHC(S)NHR, where R = H (L1), Me (L2), Et (L3), or Ph (L4), have been synthesized and characterized. The FT-IR spectral data suggested the attachment of copper(II) ion to ligand moiety through the azomethine nitrogen, thioketonic sulphur, and phenolic-O. The spectroscopic characterization indicates the dissociation of dimeric complex into mononuclear [Cu(L)Cl] units in polar solvents like DMSO, where L is monoanionic thiosemicarbazone. The DNA binding properties of the complexes with calf thymus (CT) DNA were studied by spectroscopic titration. The complexes show binding affinity to CT DNA with binding constant (Kb) values in the order of 106 M−1. The ligands and their metal complexes were tested for antibacterial and antifungal activities by agar disc diffusion method. Except for complex 4, all complexes showed considerable activity almost equal to the activity of ciprofloxacin. These complexes did not show any effect on Gram-negative bacteria, whereas they showed moderate activity for Gram-positive strains.

 2',4',5'- and 2',3',4'-trimethoxy flavanones have been synthesized starting with 2-hydroxyacetophone and substituted aldehyde. Antibacterial activities of the flavanones have been tested along with their corresponding chalcones against two human pathogenic bacteria (Streptococcus-b-haemolyticus and  Klebsiella sp. (G-)). Antifungal activities of the flavanones have also been investigated against  two plants pathogenic mold fungi (Rhizactonia solani Sclerotium rolfsii). The structures of the synthesized compounds have been characterized with the help of  UV, IR and 1H NMR and 13C-NMR spectra. The antibacterial and antifungal screening were performed in vitro by the filter paper disc diffusion method and poisoned food technique. The flavanones showed antibacterial activity while no activity was observed to their corresponding chalcones against the tested bacteria. On the other hand, chalcones and their corresponding flavanones both showed fungicidal activities.

Aims: To determine chemical constituents of the Leaf extracts of Centella asiatica using the LC-MS and GC-MS and their antimicrobial activities. Study Design: Structural determination of compounds from the leaf extracts was done using GC-MS and LC-MS analysis. The antimicrobial properties of the extracts were done using disc diffusion method. Place and Duration of Study:  Pure and Applied Chemistry Department, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kenya: Between 2016-2019. Methodology: Plant materials of C. asiatica were sequentially extracted separately based on the polarity viz., hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol. Determination of chemical constituents was done using LC-MS and GC-MS analysis and phytochemical screening. The extracts were assayed against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. Standard antimicrobials viz. ampicillin and Nystatin were used as the control. Disc diffusion method was used and zones of inhibition, after respective incubation periods, were used to quantify antibacterial and antifungal activity. Results: Phytochemical screening of the hexane, ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts showed that terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, steroids, amino acids and proteins, reducing sugars and carbohydrates were present. LC-MS and GC-MS analyses of the methanolic extracts identified 22 and 33 compounds, respectively, by use of the national institute of standards and technology (NIST) library. The extracts showed appreciable activity against common microbes tested. Conclusion: This study forms the basis for the biological characterization and significance of the compounds identified in the leaf and stem extracts of C. asiatica. These compounds are known to possess antibacterial and antifungal activities that could be established as potential candidates for future drug development. However, these extracts, need to be subjected to further chromatographic procedures to isolate the identified compounds and their bioactivities determined.

Some lanthanum(III) complexes have been synthesized by reacting lanthanum(III) metal salt with Schiff bases derived from 3-substituted-4-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole and glyoxal/biacetyl/benzyl. All these complexes are not soluble in common organic solvents. However sparingly soluble in DMF and DMSO. The chemical analysis of the complexes confirmed to the stoichiometry of the type La(III)LNO3·H2O. La(III)LCl·H2O and La(III)LNCS·H2O respectively. The chelation of the complexes has been proposed in the light of analytical, spectral studies. The measured molar conductance values indicate that, the complexes are non-electrolytes. The Schiff bases and their complexes have been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. The results of these studies show the metal complexes to be more antibacterial and antifungal as compared to the uncomplexed coumarins.
