Since the passage of the 1974 Health Care Amendments to the National Labor Relations Act, an implicit premise of public policy has been that multiple bargaining units in hospitals would lead to an increased incidence of wage leapfrogging, jurisdictional disputes, and strikes. This examination of two sets of hospitals in 1988, which had bargaining units ranging in number from zero to ten, finds little support for these assumed relationships. Only hospitals with five or six units had wage settlements that were higher than in hospitals with one unit, and then only for two of six occupations studied. Only hospitals with three or four units had more work assignment disputes than hospitals with one unit. Hospitals with four, six, or seven units averaged one more strike than hospitals with one unit over the 1980–88 period, but strikes per contract were higher only for hospitals with six units.

RÉSUMÉÀ partir des expériences d'un échantillon de femmes adultes prenant soin deleurs parents âgés, dans le contexte social et économique actuel des États-Unis, Abel démontre l'impossibilité de comprendre la notion de soins prodigués par la famille sans y inclure les politiques sociales qui s'y rattachent. Son travail est une contribution de taille à la recherche féministe sur le lien filial et les soins. Son étude s'applique en outre très bien au contexte canadien, où bon nombre de thèmes et d'orientations en matière de politiques sociales sont comparables à celles que l'on retrouve aux États-Unis. Dans son introduction, Abel expose toutes ses questions et explique son choix pour la méthode qualitative, offrant au lecteur une excellente critique de l'accumulation des recherches effectuées en gérontologie sur les soins apportés aux personnes âgées. Cette étude fournit un modèle précieux de la contribution que la recherche qualitativepourrait apporter à la politique sociale. Il a d'autant plus de valeur qu'il prend ses sources dans les expériences mêmes des gens troppeu souvent représentés dans les débats entourant les politiques sociales, mettant ainsi au défï les idées et les pratiques déjà prises pour acquises.

The emergence of a new pattern labor relations in a time of globalization and digitalization of an economy is a difficult and uncertain phenomenon, and therefore many researchers have expressed serious concern about the fate of labor and labor relations. This article explores how the forming of a network economy influences labor relations. It identifies the organizational foundations and principles of labor relations in the emerging new economy in Russia. It reviews the influence of cultural values on how networked labor relations are formed. The paper uses a multidisciplinary approach to the study of labor relations based on systems theories. The article promotes a new technique for understanding labor relations in an organization based on an extended systems approach, which provides an opportunity to assess the organizational principles of the system of labor relations, to build it in such a way that its different parts interact, respond to changes and send feedback signals, affecting the operation of the system. The paper discusses ways to solve problems in the field of social and labor relations on both organizational and theoretical levels.
