With this number of Anatolian Studies we begin the publication of the Sultantepe tablets, as foreshadowed in Volume II, p. 35. The general nature of the hoard of tablets has already been described in the previous article. We present here three texts which are of some historical importance: the two eponym lists, and the tablet from “ M.2 ” (nos. 150, 18 + 21, and 331, of the 1952 season). All three provide some additional information about the series of limmu officials or eponyms, whose names were used by the Assyrians for dating their years and therefore form the basis of Assyrian chronology; the first two referring to the period covered by the “ Eponym Canon ” (911–648 B.C.) and the third to the short period between 648 and the fall of Nineveh (612 B.C.), for which there are no lists. It is hoped to continue the publication of the tablets in succeeding volumes.

ABSTRACT The Kepler spacecraft observed the hot subdwarf star PHL 417 during its extended K2 mission, and the high-precision photometric light curve reveals the presence of 17 pulsation modes with periods between 38 and 105 min. From follow-up ground-based spectroscopy, we find that the object has a relatively high temperature of 35 600 K, a surface gravity of $\log g / {\rm cm\, s^{-2}}\, =\, 5.75$ and a supersolar helium abundance. Remarkably, it also shows strong zirconium lines corresponding to an apparent +3.9 dex overabundance compared with the Sun. These properties clearly identify this object as the third member of the rare group of pulsating heavy-metal stars, the V366-Aquarii pulsators. These stars are intriguing in that the pulsations are inconsistent with the standard models for pulsations in hot subdwarfs, which predicts that they should display short-period pulsations rather than the observed longer periods. We perform a stability analysis of the pulsation modes based on data from two campaigns with K2. The highest amplitude mode is found to be stable with a period drift, $\dot{P}$, of less than 1.1 × 10−9 s s−1. This result rules out pulsations driven during the rapid stages of helium flash ignition.

Since over 80 new ministers have entered French cabinets subsequent to the period covered in a previous article in this REVIEW, the figures supplied therein may well be brought down more closely to date. During the 805 months between February 19, 1871, and March 13, 1938, 434 persons, under-secretaries excluded, have formed the 106 separately appointed or reappointed councils of ministers. The question as to how many different cabinets France has had under the Third Republic may be left to metaphysicians. Almost every newly-appointed Conseil contains a large percentage of those who served in its predecessor. Cabinets which resign upon the election of a new president of the Republic are frequently reappointed in toto. Some cabinets have served for only a few days.

FOR the present publication the Society have to thank the liberality of Sir Rainald Knightley, Bart., the manuscript from which it was taken having been preserved in the library at Fawsley. Some years ago it was examined by our late Director, whose opinion has been carefully preserved on a sheet of paper lying amongst the first leaves of the book, and has since been printed in the third Report of the Historical MSS. Commission, p. 254. A more lengthened examination than Mr. Bruce appears to have been able to give to the MS. only served to corroborate the favourable opinion which he formed of it; and, even though much of its contents are anticipated by the considerable extracts from Eliot's Negotium Posterorum, printed by Mr. Forster in his biography of Sir John Eliot, there is even now quite enough of independent information to be gained from it to warrant its publication, especially as the debates reported in it are of such extreme historical importance.

Abstract This is the third of a series of papers that presents an algorithm to search for close binaries with massive, possibly compact, unseen secondaries. The detection of such a binary is based on identifying a star that displays a large ellipsoidal periodic modulation, induced by tidal interaction with its companion. In the second paper of the series we presented a simple approach to derive a robust modified minimum mass ratio (mMMR), based on the observed ellipsoidal amplitude, without knowing the primary mass and radius, assuming the primary fills its Roche lobe. The newly defined mMMR is always smaller than the actual mass ratio. Therefore, a binary with an mMMR larger than unity is a good candidate for having a massive secondary, which might be a black hole or a neutron star. This paper considers 10,956 OGLE short-period ellipsoidals observed towards the Galactic Bulge. We re-analyse their modulation and identify 136 main-sequence systems with mMMR significantly larger than unity as candidates for having compact-object secondaries, assuming their observed periodic modulations reflect indeed the ellipsoidal effect. Obviously, one needs follow-up observations to find out the true nature of these companions.

The article presents the results of an archaeoparasitological and palynological study of a sample taken from the sewage drain of the Chorgun Tower. This is a fortification on the territory of the village of Chernorechie (South-Western Crimea). According to archaeological research, the construction of the keep dates back to the third quarter of the 15th century. Four types of eggs of intestinal parasites infecting humans and synanthropic animals were identified in the sample. Regarding parasitic and infectious gastrointestinal diseases, human whipworm and roundworm eggs found in the sample are indicative of relatively unfavorable sanitary conditions of the fortification. Based on the features of the archaeoparasitological spectrum, it can be concluded that anthelminthic agents were used or food with antiparasitic effects against roundworms was consumed. The difficult sanitary and epidemiological situation was also complicated by synanthropic rodents, such as rats and domestic mice, which could be a constant source of dangerous infections in the Chorgun Keep. A palynological study of the contents of the sewage runoff made it possible to obtain additional information on the nutrition of people who used the latrine facilities in the Chorgun Keep. What is equally important is that the study demonstrates the possibilities of methods for the study of canalization as a source of bioarchaeological information.

Abstract This study examines cross-speaker repetition in triadic conversations in the Japanese language. For the analysis, three sets of triadic conversations between close friends taken from a TV talk show are used. The results reveal that repetition in triadic conversations performs distinctive functions that are not observed in dyadic conversations: repetition often takes place between only two participants of the triad and allows the two to team up and strengthen their bond exclusively (teaming repetition), or even playfully tease the third participant (teasing repetition). Repetition is also shared between the three participants. In such cases, it allows the participants to create an instant bond by joking or referring to shared circumstances (immediate threefold repetition), or to gradually establish rapport by connecting their utterances and co-constructing a story (repetition relay). All these types of repetition express the participants’ points of view and contribute efficiently to their relationships that shift from moment to moment. The study further demonstrates cases in which one participant makes good use of various repetition types in a short period of time and efficiently allocates thoughts and feelings to the other two participants. The study concludes that repetition plays a significant role in Japanese conversation, helping speakers to converse smoothly and manage the dynamic relationships efficiently.

Prostate cancer is the third highest cause of male mortality in the developed world, with the burden of the disease increasing dramatically with demographic change. There are significant limitations to the current diagnostic regimens and no established effective screening modality. To this end, research has discovered hundreds of potential ‘biomarkers’ that may one day be of use in screening, diagnosis or prognostication. However, the barriers to bringing biomarkers to clinical evaluation and eventually into clinical usage have yet to be realised. This is an operational challenge that requires some new thinking and development of paradigms to increase the efficiency of the laboratory process and add ‘value’ to the clinician. Value comes in various forms, whether it be a process that is seamlessly integrated into the hospital laboratory environment or one that can provide additional ‘information’ for the clinical pathologist in terms of risk profiling. We describe, herein, an efficient and tissue-conserving pipeline that uses Tissue Microarrays in a semi-automated process that could, one day, be integrated into the hospital laboratory domain, using seven putative prostate cancer biomarkers for illustration.

The general progressive disease in the structure of the nervous centres, and the steady deterioration of their functions, that constitute by far the chief part of general paralysis, are attended in their course in some cases by various nervous symptoms that closely imitate many of the neuroses of sensibility and motion; such as neuralgia, amaurosis, locomotor ataxy, glosso-pharyngeal paralysis, hemiplegia, apoplexy and epilepsy. Indeed, it is not uncommon for cases of the disease to be diagnosed as epilepsy and glosso-pharyngeal paralysis. I have lately had three cases of the disease under my care, in two of which the ordinary symptoms of aphasia were present for a short period in one stage of the disease, and in the third the symptoms of unilateral chorea were well marked.

Contact binary stars coupled by a common convective envelope in which the entropy is constant, the Lucy model, are unstable against mass exchange: if either component begins to transfer mass, it will continue to do so. A detailed sequence of models is calculated which follows the thermal evolution of a 2M⊙ contact binary of normal Population I abundances (X=0.70, Z = 0.02), starting at nearly equal mass. The initial instability develops into a cyclic mass-exchange with the mass fraction oscillating between 0.56≤m2/(m1 + m2)≤0.62 with a period of ~107yr. Throughout the cycle the component stars are not in thermal equilibrium. The instability is of a general nature, and such oscillating systems can satisfactorily populate the short period, red region of the period color relation for WUMa stars.

Abstract 1SWASP J161335.80$-$284722.2 (hereafter J161335) is an eclipsing red-dwarf binary with an orbital period of $0.229778\:$d, which is around the short-period limit for contact binaries. Three sets of multi-color light curves of J161335 were obtained from different telescopes in 2015 and 2016 and are analyzed using the Wilson–Devinney method. We discovered that the system is a W-type contact system with a contact degree of 19% and a high mass ratio of 0.91. By using all available eclipse times, we found that the observed $-$ calculated $(O-C)$ diagram displays a cyclic oscillation with an amplitude of 0.00196($\pm 0.00006)\:$d and a period of 4.79($\pm 0.14)\:$yr while it undergoes a downward parabolic change. This downward variation corresponds to a continuous decrease in the orbital period at a rate of $dP/dt = -4.26(\pm$0.01) $\times$ 10$^{-7}\:$d$\:$yr$^{-1}$. The small-amplitude oscillation is explained as the light travel-time effect from the gravitational influence of a third body with a lowest mass of $M _{3}$ = 0.15($\pm 0.01)M_{\,\odot }$. In solving the light curves, we found that the third light is increasing, with the wavelength suggesting that the third body may be a cool red dwarf. This is in agreement with the results obtained by analyzing the $O-C$ diagram. The tertiary red dwarf is orbiting the central red-dwarf binary at an orbital separation of 2.8($\pm 0.2$) au. These results suggest that the J161335 system may be formed through early dynamical interaction where the original low-mass component was replaced by a higher-mass third body and the lower-mass component was kicked out to a wider orbit. In this way, a hierarchical triple system similar to J161335 with a high-mass-ratio binary and a small close-in third body is formed.
