The corrosion resistance of laser-welded composite arch wire (CoAW) with Cu interlayer between NiTi shape memory alloy and stainless steel wire in artificial saliva with different acidities and loads was studied. It was found that both the solution pH and the stress had a significant influence on the corrosion behaviors of the CoAW samples. Decreasing the solution pH or increasing the loading stress caused the increase of Cu release and weight loss. The corroded morphology formed on the surfaces of the CoAW was the consequence under the combined effect of corrosion and stress.

The effects of the duration of potentiostatic anodizing on the corrosion resistance and surface morphology of anodic oxide films formed on Mg-Al alloy (AZ91) in 1 M NaOH were investigated. With the formation of an anodic film, the current density decreased gradually, started to stabilize at 300 s, and was relatively constant at 600 s. These results may be related to the increased time for catalysis of the active dissolution reaction, which not only enlarges the area covered by the anodic film, but also produces a more coherent, thicker film. The reference corrosion potentials of the anodic oxide film for AZ91 shifted in the noble direction with time. In general, the corrosion resistance characteristics were improved with anodizing time.

A final thermomechanical treatment (FTMT) including peak aging and subsequent dynamic aging was proposed to prepare 7055 Al alloy sheets. The optimization was based on nine well-planned orthogonal experiments. Three main processing conditions in the thermomechanical treatment for obtaining the optimum synthetic properties of 7055 (i.e. preheating temperature, final rolling temperature and deformation degree) were investigated. It was shown that the final rolling temperature is the most important factor among the three parameters, and the optimum properties (yield strength: 651 MPa, ultimate tensile strength: 660 MPa) of 7055 Al alloy sheet can be gained with preheating at 140oC and 40% deformation at 170oC. With dynamic aging, grain boundary precipitates became discontinuous without much coarsening of matrix precipitates, while they were continuously distributed after T6 aging. The present optimal FTMT process can improve the intergranular / exfoliation corrosion resistance without sacrificing the strength compared to T6 tempering. The present FTMT process as a good alternative can produce high-strength Al alloy sheets with high strength and good corrosion resistance efficiently and economically.

Corrosion resistance of Zr that has been added to an Al alloy (U1070) is higher than that of a commercial Al alloy (A1070). A decreasing number and size of Al3Fe intermetallic particles (IMPs) were observed by electron microprobe analysis and transmission electron microscopy. Based on the numerical corrosion simulation, it was confirmed that decreasing the number and size of IMPs was favorable for improving the corrosion resistance of the Al alloy due to the reduction of the galvanic effect. In addition, Al3Zr was found to be insignificant in promoting galvanic corrosion within the Al matrix. Thus, Zr is an advantageous alloying element for improving the corrosion resistance of the Al alloy.
