The article is devoted to the analysis of the author’s paroimia “If you like printing, you should like to be prisoned”. In the course of working with the sources of the period of the first Russian revolution, the only case of using this paroimia in the rubric “New Proverbs” of the socio-political satirical magazine “Zarnitsy” was revealed. The scientific novelty of the study is that for the first time the author’s paroimia “If you like printing, you should like to be prisoned” is analyzed, which has not previously attracted the attention of researchers. The methods of component, contextual, logical and semiotic analysis, as well as analysis of vocabulary definitions were used in the work. As a result of the study, the following results were obtained: 1) a source paroimia was established; 2) a structural and semantic transformation of the source paroimia was characterized; 3) recognition of the author’s paroimia was scientifically grounded in its system prototype; 4) an analysis of the events of Russian history of the period of the first Russian revolution, which led to the emergence of a new paroimia, was done, 5) the author’s paroimia judgment was formulated, its type was defined. The final part of the article outlines the prospects for further research.

This article is devoted to the scholarly work of the prominent Russian historian Igor Iakovlevich Froianov who died last December. He is a brilliant representative of the Petersburg Historical School, and first and foremost — a well-known specialist in the history of so called Kievan Rus. He created a complex concept of the “obcshinno-vechevaia” civilization of Old Rus. His concept is ultimately comprehensive because he studied in consecutive order practically all sides of such a phenomenon as Kievan Rus: economy, political life, social struggle, culture. His concept emerged in confrontation with the prevalent Soviet vision of this history, and at the same time from the very beginning it became a creative continuation and development of pre-revolution historiography. He also devoted several interesting and important works to the period of Moscow Rus, particularly to the process of formation of the Russian monarchy. These works made an excellent foundation for the new original view of this epoch of the Russian history, different from other concepts. Froianov’s legacy is divided into two parts: before and after the middle of the 1990s when so called “perestroika” took place in the USSR. On the one hand, he continued to study the old time. On the other hand, a number of his later works are devoted to the history of Russian revolution (1917) and to the above-mentioned “perestroika”. These works are closely connected with a publicistic genre which captivated him in those years. However, it is to a certain extent a continuation of his previous interests as these works are dedicated to the same Russian-Orthodox Civilization.

The article deals with the genesis of the definition “the paganism of the Eastern Slavs” in the works of Russian historians in the 18th–19th centuries. The author determines the sources of that terminology and considers its methodological and ideological sense. He compares the definitions of Old Russian antipagan texts and first Russian scientific works on history and mythology. The medieval literature contained a lot of concepts, but one can’t find their any mention about “paganism” as phenomenon as well as the word “paganism”. Old Russian authors mostly wrote about “pagan people” as social and religious group and gave them the concrete features depending of the context. The awareness with “paganism” as a phenomenon should relate to the scientific works on history and mythology. This definition firstly appeared in the lexicons of E. Veisman and I.K. Adelung with their Russian translation of the Latin “gentile” and German “heidentum”. Also one can find it in the “Russian history” of V.N. Tatishchev who used “Cimbrische Heyden Religion” written by Arnkiel Trogilliusas as one of the important source. However, it took a while to make this definition to become central in the scientific literature. At the beginning of the 19th century, a lot of authors preferred to use the word “basnoslovie”. The definition “paganism” became fundamental with the issue of the great work N.M. Karamsin after all. Such history of this word reveals not only its complexity and ambiguity but the argumentativeness of the traditional view of “paganism” as a product of the church literature only.
