Reading comprehension in Indonesian students is very weak. It is proven by Pisa 2018, a result which states that from a comparison between science, mathematics, and reading comprehension, Indonesian students are ranked 74th in the sixth from bottom. This article aims to analyze the level of questions used in an English textbook entitled "Stop Bullying Now" for class XI SMA published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia in 2017. This analysis uses Barrett's taxonomy to test reading comprehension. Questions in the book with content analysis of qualitative research. Based on Barrett's taxonomy, there are five levels of reading comprehension questions: literal comprehension, reorganization, inferential, evaluation, and appreciation. The results showed that the level of literal understanding (7.45%), reorganization (0 %), inferential (39.36%), evaluation (36.17%), and appreciation (17.02%). This shows that the higher-level comprehension is dominant over lower-level comprehension, but the level is not evenly distributed in all texts. The results of this study can provide an overview of the level of reading comprehension questions used in the English textbook entitled "Stop Bullying Now," which is helpful for teachers as a guide in learning English reading comprehension.

Abstract: This study examined what character education values presented in the English textbook published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Republic Indonesia for grade 12. This type of this research is a content analysis. The data source of this research is the English textbook for grade 12 SMA/SMK. Fourteen speaking scripts of this textbook were analysed by using content analysis to find what values inserted in it. The finding showed that there were 17 character education values presented in the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris SMA/SMK. It means this textbook is suitable as the materials and guidance for English teachers to teach English and to develop the character education values suggested by the 2013 Curriculum to the students.Keywords: character education values, content analysis, the english texbook, the 2013 curriculumANALISIS NILAI-NILAI PENDIDIKAN KARAKTER DALAM BUKU TEKS BAHASA INGGRIS UNTUK SISWA KELAS DUA BELAS SMA: BAHASA INGGRIS SMA/SMK Abstrak: Penelitian ini menguji nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter apa yang disajikan dalam buku teks bahasa Inggris yang diterbitkan oleh Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia untuk kelas 12. Empat belas potongan pembicaraan dari buku teks ini dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis konten untuk menemukan nilai-nilai apa yang ada di dalamnya. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 17 nilai pendidikan karakter yang disajikan dalam buku teks bahasa Inggris berjudul Bahasa Inggris SMA/SMK. Ini berarti buku teks ini cocok sebagai bahan dan pedoman bagi guru Bahasa Inggris untuk mengajar Bahasa Inggris dan untuk mengembangkan nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter yang disarankan oleh Kurikulum 2013 kepada para siswa.Kata Kunci: nilai pendidikan karakter, analisis konten, buku teks bahasa inggris, kurikulum 2013

This study aims to find out the GI and LD level, the text which has the highest GI and LD and what make the text has the highest GI and LD of Advanced Learning English 2 textbook. This study was conducted by using qualitative research. The data of study were the 18 texts inside of the Advanced Learning English 2 textbook for grade XI Senior High School. The data were analyzed by using Eggins (2004) theory. The result of this study: 1) GI level of text was high based on Eggins theory that the texts had more complex clauses than simple clause. Text 1 was 0.52. Text 2 was 1.24. Text 3 was 0.84. Text 4 was 0.92. Text 5 was 1.95. Text 6 is 1.46. Text 7 was 1.03. Text 8 was 0.90. Text 9 was 1.62. Text 10 was 1.85. Text 11 was 1.64. Text 12 was 2.25. Text 13 was 2.60 Text 14 was 1.40. Text 15 was 1.80. Text 16 was 4.00. Text 17 was 1.42. Text 18 was 1.73. The LD level of text was low based on Eggins theory that the texts had more content carrying lexical item than non-content carrying lexical items . Text 1 was 0.56. Text 2 was 0.52. Text 3 was 0.52. Text 4 was 0.54. Text 5 was 0.55. Text 6 was 0.40. Text 7 was 0.42. Text 8 was 0.36. Text 9 was 0.44. Text 10 was 0.46. Text 11 was 0.44. Text 12 was 0.39. Text 13 was 0.38. Text 14 was 0.38. Text 15 was 0.42. Text 16 was 0.38. Text 17 was 0.46. Text 18 was 0.42. 2) The text had the highest GI was 4.00 within title Removing Lead from Petrol in hortatory exposition text and the text had the highest of LD was 0.56 within title Panda in report text. 3)The length of the sentence didn’t influence the grammatical intricacy of the text but the more clause complexes and content carrying lexical items could make the reader difficult to process the text.

This study aims at finding how English textbook published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia for Grade X of senior high school represents gender. It is a descriptive work using content analysis as its design in looking at how gender is represented in the book both quantitatively and qualitatively.The findings showed that the text book is generally gender friendly in which it represents women and men in mostly equal manner. However, it is still not free from stereotyping attached to its female and male characters. Furthermore, the differences in verbosity, the use of question form and intensifiers by female and male characters are identified.  Key words: gender representation, English textbook, Grade X

Nowadays, moderate Islamic thought has been emphasized by the Indonesian government. This can be seen from the school curriculum that includes moderate Islamic thought and tolerance. This study seeks to review moderate Islamic thinking that was initiated by Islamic reformers in the book Pendidikan Agama Islam (PAI) dan Budi Pekerti of class XI Senior High School, that was published by the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2014 and 2017. This article used library research. All data is collected through documentation and analyzed using content analysis. The results of this study stated that in the 2014 edition of the PAI dan Budi Pekerti class XI there was one Islamic figure whose thoughts were extreme and did not include moderate, namely Muh}ammad b. ‘Abd al-Wahhāb. So that in the 2017 edition of PAI dan Budi Pekerti class XI, the figure of ‘Abd al-Wahhāb is no longer presented and replaced with a moderate-minded Islamic figure, namely Namik Kemal. The nine other Islamic figures have moderate Islamic thoughts both in the 2014 and 2017 book edtions.

Language in any forms, including pictures, conveys massage. Pictures and images carry culture within that reflect attitudes and social life in the world any specific language spoken. Learning English should also be learning its culture to get a better picture of it. One of the sources in learning English is a course book. This article was aimed at finding out what elements that were presented in a senior high school course book of a second grade because of the focus is assumed to be on the lessons in Indonesia. This article report used content analysis as a framework to analyze the culture presented in pictures. It was found that the pictures were well representatives of an English speaking country’s culture. The pictures shared the activities, the seasons, the habit, and the way they dress, behave, and speak that in some ways were different that of Indonesia. The pictures also gave information on different values between Indonesia and English speaking countries
