This article is the first in a series that focuses on anatomy and physiology. Human anatomy, just like any other technical subject, has its own vocabulary. When learning anatomy for the first time, it can sometimes feel like you are learning a new language. This article provides the reader with an understanding of the language used when discussing various anatomical concepts. The healthcare assistant and assistant practitioner (HCA and AP) will need to understand anatomical terminology accurately, so as to provide care that is safe and effective. The article addresses roots, prefixes and suffixes, anatomical position, regional terms, directional terms, body planes and body cavities. Each article in the series ends with a glossary of terms helping readers understand some of the terminology that has been used. A series of ‘test yourself’ questions is also provided.

Ectopic spleen is a rare clinical malformation in which the spleen is relocated from its normal anatomical position to other parts of the abdomen. We report a rare case of abdominopelvic ectopic spleen caused by splenic ligament deficiency. A patient experienced intermittent pain in the left upper abdomen that was progressively aggravated. This was confirmed by comprehensive imaging examinations and postoperative pathology. We also performed a review of the literature on the current state of the field. Our data may help to improve the diagnosis and treatment of ectopic spleen.

This film makes three observations on the filming of tactility and movement in order to adequately convey tacit knowledge in embodied ways. The author, Wuon-Gean Ho, studied the craft of traditional woodblock printmaking in Japan, and demonstrates planning, carving and printing of a woodblock print. The first observation is that an alteration of the time-base of the film and subsequent manipulation of the soundscape can provide embodied affects. Secondly the film refers to the effect of mirror-touch-synaesthesia with close macro shots and intimate angles. Thirdly, the use of a birds’ eye point of view, with the hands of the artist in the same anatomical position as the viewers’ hands, enables the gaze of the viewer to mimic that of the maker, conveying haptic knowledge through poetic means.The voiceover to the film is made with deliberate reference to ASMR videos that engender a sense of intimacy. The non-objectivity of the recording process is commented upon. The conclusion is that constructed scenarios might convey more than real-time truthful indexical footage.

Abstract IntroductionDetection of exact location of greater palatine foramen and its anatomical variations are vital prior to posterior maxillary surgeries and gingival grafts. The aim of this study is to determine the anatomical position and size of the greater palatine canal (GPC) and foramen (GPF) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans.Materials and methodsIn this descriptive-analytic study, CBCT images of 148 patients were assessed. To determine the anatomical foramen position, the posterior maxilla area was divided into five regions on the axial view (A: from the mesial surface of the second molar to the center of the second molar, B: from the center of the second molar to its distal, C: from the mesial surface of the third molar to the center of the third molar, D: from the center of the third molar to the distal of the third molar, E: distal to the third molar.). The length of the canal was investigated on both coronal and sagittal views. Independent and paired T-test were used to analyze the data.ResultsAmong 80 females -68 males, the anatomical position of the GPF was mainly located in region E on the left (55%) and the right (50%), and then, respectively, in region D and region C. The mean diameter of GPF was 4/48 mm on the left and 4/63 mm on the right side (P-value = 0/01). The average length of the canal on the coronal view was 29.46 mm on the left side and 29.75 mm on the right (P-Value = 0/005). The average length of the canal on the sagittal view was 29.62 mm on the left and 30.02 mm on the right (P-value = 0/001).ConclusionThe anatomical position of the GPF was primarily located distal to the third maxillary molar. CBCT is a valuable diagnostic tool for evaluation of vital anatomic landmarks in the maxillofacial region prior to surgeries and interventions.

Removal of the anterior pituitary gland by extirpation, an operation considered impossible for a long time due to the special anatomical position of this gland, along with disturbed growth and metabolism, leads to a number of profound changes in the sexual apparatus: heat ceases, atrophy of the sexual apparatus takes place and, as a secondary phenomenon, the sexual instinct weakens. The opposite is observed when a small piece of the pituitary gland is transplanted.If the pituitary gland is transplanted to a non-mature animal, rapid puberty ensues, the ovaries enlarge, the follicles mature, which burst, giving rise to the formation of yellow bodies, with all the secondary phenomena in the sexual apparatus: uterine hypertrophy, the phenomenon of uterine heat from the vagina, etc.

This chapter provides both the classification and grading of pelvic organ prolapse, alongside assessment and examination of the patient. Management is split into conservative, pessaries, and surgery. Different types of surgery and their techniques are described, with indications and variants for various prolapses.

The use of single rectangular stimuli, applied directly to the heart surface, has been confirmed as a reliable method for measurement of the ventricular fibrillation threshold (VFT). The following factors which influence reproducibility were investigated: 1) spatial separation of bipolar electrodes, 2) interval between stimuli, and 3) anatomical position of electrodes on the heart. With bipolar electrodes placed 10–30 mm apart and an interval of 10–15 cycles between stimuli the VFT was remarkably constant for any single dog. An interelectrode separation of 2–4 mm or the placement of electrodes in a coagulated area of epicardium produced high, widely variable, and at times unobtainable thresholds believed due to short circuiting of the current delivered. Thresholds determined with stimuli 3–4 beats apart were significantly lower than when stimuli were delivered 10–15 beats apart. The VFT was significantly higher at the base than at the apex of the left ventricle. Investigations which measure the effect of a given influence on the VFT should control the factors studied here.
