In the quest to produce an acceptable local beverage that could serve as an alternative variety to kunun-zaki for many millions of Nigerians who take the cereal-based beverage as their most preferred and affordable drink a study was undertaken to assess the microbial and sensory quality attributes of laboratory-produced Date fruit-based kunun-zaki. Different blends of dry date fruits (Phoenix dactylifera) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) formulated as follows; F1 (100:0), F2 (70:30), F3 (50:50), and F4 (30:70%) of date fruits/sorghum were soaked overnight in water, drained and were wet-milled with ginger and cloves using an equal volume of sterile water, F5 (0:100) was market (Control) sample. The microbial succession study included the identification of organisms at various critical stages of the production of the beverage. The results of the study showed the mean pH, and TTA (%) values for the respective formulated Kunun-dabino product were F1 (4.87 and 0.3870), F2 (4.66 and 0.4508), F3 (4.29 and 0.4600), F4 (4.04 and 0.4690), F5/Control (4.32 and 0.4589) respectively. The mean Total bacterial, coliform and fungal loads of the four experimental products were 2.58 x 104, NIL, and 3.56 x 103 CFU/ml respectively which fall within W.H.O’s recommended standards for ready-to-eat foods. Species of Bacillus, Enterobacter, Shigella, Lactobacillus, Aspergillus, Penicillium Mucur, and Candida were present at the initial production stage while Bacillus and Lactobacillus species persisted right through to the final stage of production. The results of the sensory evaluation showed that while F1 was the least liked, F3 was significantly preferred over the other samples (P < 0.05). The study has shown that ‘Kunun dabino’ produced under the laboratory conditions in this study provides a new brand of beverage that is both microbiologically safe and organoleptically more acceptable to taste panelists.

AbstractDate fruits are endowed with medicinal values, including boosting the male fertility status, but with meagre empirical evidence. Thus, the current study was designed to assess the ameliorative and potential adverse effects of date fruit extracts (Phoenix dactylifera) on cypermethrin-induced male infertility. The study was conducted in two phases using adult male Wistar rats (n = 42, 180 – 220 g and aged 14 - 16 weeks). The first phase was a single oral dose toxicity study to ascertain the suitability of date fruit extract and cypermethrin administered at 250 mg/kg and 60 mg/kg, respectively. The second phase, which included four treatment groups of six animals per group, assessed the effects of date fruits on cypermethrin-induced infertility. At the termination of the experiment, semen was collected by epididymal extraction for the assessment of sperm abnormalities, motility, mass activity, semen pH, and percentage live. Serum samples were also collected for testosterone and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) profiling, and the collected data was subjected to statistical analysis. The group administered only cypermethrin showed a decrease in percentage motility, live, mass activity and an increase in total abnormalities over the control group while the group exposed to only date fruits extracts showed increased percentage motility, live, mass activity and a decrease in total abnormalities over the control. The results of a combined administration of date fruit extracts and cypermethrin on a separate group showed a consistently reduced percentage of anatomically abnormal sperm cells and a general improvement of sperm motility and mass activity. There was no significant difference in the weight of the Wister rats in all the groups (p > 0.05). However, testosterone and FSH levels were significantly reduced (p < 0.05) by date fruit extract treatment. The current report provides evidence of the potential ameliorative effects of date fruit extracts in cypermethrin-induced male infertility and cautions excessive use or abuse since some adverse effects were observed.

Spontaneous speech samples of 27 children with trisomy-21 type Down’s syndrome and 66 normal children were tape-recorded and analyzed for mean fundamental frequency, standard deviation, and range. Results indicate that the mean speaking fundamental frequency (SFF) level for the sample of children with mongolism was significantly higher than the mean SFF level for the control sample. Approximately 50% of the children with mongolism had mean SFF levels exceeding the highest mean SFF level of their matched controls. In only two cases did the mean SFF for a child with mongolism fall below the mean SFF level for control children of the same age and sex. No child with mongolism exhibited a mean SFF level below the lowest mean SFF for any control subject. The subject in question is the clinical observation that children with mongolism typically have low voice fundamental frequency levels.

The old world date mite Oligonychus afrasiaticus is an important spider mite pest of the date palms Phoenix dactylifera L. mostly in North Africa and the Middle East. A population of the predaceous mite Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) athenas has been recently found in Tunisia in association with a decrease of O. afrasiaticus densities. The objective of this paper was to assess the development and reproduction abilities of T. ( A.) athenas on O. afrasiaticus under laboratory conditions at two temperatures: 27 and 32 °C. The results obtained show that females of T. (A.) athenas develop in 5 days at 27 °C and 4.1 days at 32 °C. The mean fecundity of T. (A.) athenas was 32.1 and 23.2 eggs per female at 27 and 32 °C, respectively. Life table parameters were stimated: the net reproductive rate (Ro) 27.9 and 17.9 eggs/female, the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) 0.322 and 0,344 female/female/day and the mean generation time (T) 10.3 and 8.4 days at 27 and 32 °C, respectively. At both temperatures tested, T. (A.) athenas intrinsic rate of increase was greater than that of O. afrasiaticus (rm = 0.213 at 32 °C,against rm = 0.166 day1 at 27 °C). Typhlodromus (A.) athenas would be able to develop at a wide range of temperatures feeding on O. afrasiaticus and seems to be able to potentially control it.

ABSTRACT Background: Infertility may give an impact on psychosocial. In Indonesia, the habit of consuming young dates is often done by couples to increase fertility. FSH is one of the factors that play a role in folliculogenesis. The lack of scientific evidence of young dates consumption effects on female reproduction has led to this study. This study aims to determine the levels of FSH hormone and the picture of ovarian tissue in mice after administration of young dates. Method: This study used an experimental design using 28 female Sprague-Dawley rats which were randomly divided into 4 groups. Group I to III was given young dates in successive doses: 17 mg, 34 mg, 68 mg per 200 grams of body weight and group IV was given distilled water. The treatment was carried out for 28 days. FSH levels were examined before treatment during the proestrus phase which was known from microscopic examination of rat vaginal swabs. The treatment begins during the proestrus phase. Result: The mean baseline and post-treatment FSH levels were 0.08 and 0.09 respectively Conclusion: There is no significant increase of FSH levels and FSH receptors as the effect of giving young dates (Phoenix Dactylifera) to female Sprague-Dawley rats Keywords: Dates, FSH, FSH receptors, Rats   ABSTRAK Latar Belakang: Infertilitas dapat memberikan dampak psikososial. Di Indonesia, kebiasaan mengkonsumsi kurma muda sering dilakukan oleh pasangan untuk meningkatkan kesuburan. Hormon FSH merupakan salah satu faktor yang berperan dalam folikelgenesis.  Belum adanya bukti ilmiah efek konsumsi buah kurma muda terhadap reproduksi wanita mendorong dilakukannya studi ini. Studi ini bertujuan mengetahui kadar hormon FSH dan gambaran jaringan ovarium pada tikus setelah pemberian kurma muda. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan desain ekperimental menggunakan tikus Sprague dawney betina sebanyak 28 ekor yang dibagi secara acak menjadi 4 kelompok. Kelompok I-III diberikan kurma muda dosis berturut -turut 17 mg, 34 mg, 68 mg per 200 gram BB dan kelompok IV diberikan aquadest. Perlakuan dilakukan selama 28 hari. Kadar hormon FSH diperiksa sebelum perlakuan saat fase proestrus yang diketahui dari pemeriksaan mikroskopis swab vagina tikus. Perlakuan dimulai saat fase proestrus. Hasil: Rerata kadar FSH baseline dan paska perlakuan adalah 0,08 dan 0,09 Kesimpulan: Tidak terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan kadar FSH dan reseptor FSH terhadap efek pemberian buah kurma muda (Phoenix Dactylifera) pada uterus tikus Spague Dawney Kata kunci : kurma, FSH, Reseptor FSH, tikus

The khoa roll samples were prepared by using of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 per cent cocoa powder and @ 22% sugar. On the basis of sensory evaluation, without addition of cocoa powder (T0), addition of 2.0% cocoa powder (T1), 2.5% cocoa powder (T2) and 3.0% cocoa powder (T3) and 22% sugar level were selected for experimental trials. The experimental samples were evaluated for sensory,chemical and microbiological qualities. Experimental data was analyzed using standard method. The sensory attributes i.e. colour and appearance, body and textureflavour and overall acceptability of the khoa roll samples significantly differed (P less than 0.05) due to addition of cocoa powder. The sensory scores for colour and appearance, body and texture, flavour and overall acceptability of the product ranged from 7.58 to 8.06, 7.60 to 8.06, 7.60 to 8.20 and 7.60 to 8.20. There was significant differences (P less than 0.05) with respect to fat, protein, lactose, total solids, titratable acidity and pH of khoa roll samples due to addition of cocoa powder. The mean fat, protein, lactose, total solids, titratable acidity and pH value ranged from 21.4 to 21.84 %, 17.31 to 18.74 %, 23.43 to 23.48 %, 67.27 to 69.63, 0.62 to 0.68 % LA and 6.18 to 6.21, respectively. The SPC and YMC count ranged from 5.4 x 102cfu/g (T0) to 8.2 x 102cfu/g (T3), 2.2 x 102cfu/g (T0) to 10.6 x 102cfu/g (T3), respectively. On the basis of results of sensory quality the better quality khoa roll can be prepared by blend of 2.5 per cent cocoa powder and 22 % sugar in khoa.
