Odontoma, a mixed odontogenic tumor, is considered to be a hamartoma rather than a true neoplasm. Fully developed odontomas chiefly consist of enamel, dentin, pulp and occasionally cementum. They are subdivided into compound and complex types. The compound odontoma is composed of multiple, small tooth like structures, whereas the complex type consists of a conglomerated mass of enamel and dentin, having no anatomical resemblance to a tooth. They are usually asymptomatic, slow growing but cause bony expansion, which is often discovered during routine radiography. Here, we report a case of a complex odontoma in the posterior left mandibular region in an eight year old female child.

Ameloblastoma is an aggressive slow growing benign epithelial odontogenic tumor usually associated with an unerupted third molar. In this report, we present the case of a 71-year-old male with a large swelling on the left mandibular region causing a remarkable facial asymmetry. After clinical, radiological, and histopathological examinations the diagnosis of conventional ameloblastoma was made. To avoid probable recurrence our treatment choice was a segmental mandibular resection with the placement of a reconstructive titanium plate to maintain the space for subsequent bone graft.

Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumors. They are broadly classified in to Compound Odontoma and Complex Odontoma. Among them complex odontoma is a rare tumor. Occasionally this tumor becomes large, causing expansion of bone followed by facial asymmetry. Otherwise these tumors are asymptomatic and are generally diagnosed on radiographic examination. We report a rare case of complex odontoma of mandible in a young boy. The tumor was treated by surgical excision under general anesthesia.

Abstract Although odontomas are considered to be a common type of odontogenic tumor, they rarely occur solely in the primary dentition. This case report presents an eight and a half-year-old-child with a compound odontoma located in the mandible, which caused the impaction of both primary and permanent canines.

ReferênciasTeruhisa U, Murakami J, Hitasomi M, Yanagi Y, Asaumi J. The term odontoma refers to hamartomatous lesions (malformations) rather than true neoplasms. They are the most common odontogenic tumour of jaws. They are slow growing in nature. Missing permanent tooth or retained deciduous tooth brings the patient to the clinician usually during second decade of life. Two types of odontomas has been described: complex and compound. The compound type is more common and frequently found in the anterior maxilla. A 15-year-old male patient reported to department Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with missing permanent right central and lateral incisor with retained deciduous in place. Intraoral radiographs were done and multiple small denticles were seen. A total of 39 denticles of various sizes were enucleated from the lesion making this case very unusual.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare mixed odontogenic tumor consisting of both ectodermal and mesenchymal components. It occurs predominantly in children and adolescents, especially in the mandibular posterior region. Histopathologically,AFO exhibits the combination of ameloblastic fibromalike tissue and complex odontoma. A case of AFO in a 1-year-old child was presented. It produced an expansile lesion over the upper right anterior region and showed typical histopathological features of AFO. She was treated by enucleation with no recurrence observed after a follow-up period of 1 year.
