IoT provides device interaction and provision of advantages capability for networking and socialization with consideration of intermediate devices. Through innovation in technology IoT devices convert cyber environments with hyper-connectivity. IoT communication contains several smart devices such as body sensors, smartphones, tags, electronic gadgets, and so on. IoT communication is involved in the provision of heterogeneous connectivity among devices for the provision of interface and connectivity for enhancing service quality. The data sending among IoT devices is affected by several threats that have an impact on the network’s performance. To overcome the limitation related to IoT communication, it is necessary to develop an appropriate technique for enhancing IoT network communication performance. In this research developed a multi-channel routing approach is adopted in IoT communication. The developed approach utilizes a meta-heuristics approach with probability-based characteristics. For the meta-heuristics approach this research utilizes whale optimization technique combined with probability characteristics for improving the IoT communication performance of the network. The proposed approach utilizes initially constructs the IoT communication path for information sharing and gathering. This path information is identified through the objective function of a meta-heuristic approach. Based on the objective function hoping between the devices is minimized through which data are transmitted in the network. Simulation is performed as a unique proposed approach with a coverage area of 100 meters. For identification of the optimal path in the network, WOA identifies the path of communication through probability function. Comparative analysis of research exhibited that WOA provides significant performance with the identification of optimal value at the range of 1.0746e-78. Further, the proposed probability-based WOA approach significantly improves the performance of the IoT network.

Wearable internet of things (IoT) devices can enable a variety of biomedical applications, such as gesture recognition, health monitoring, and human activity tracking. Size and weight constraints limit the battery capacity, which leads to frequent charging requirements and user dissatisfaction. Minimizing the energy consumption not only alleviates this problem, but also paves the way for self-powered devices that operate on harvested energy. This paper considers an energy-optimal gesture recognition application that runs on energy-harvesting devices. We first formulate an optimization problem for maximizing the number of recognized gestures when energy budget and accuracy constraints are given. Next, we derive an analytical energy model from the power consumption measurements using a wearable IoT device prototype. Then, we prove that maximizing the number of recognized gestures is equivalent to minimizing the duration of gesture recognition. Finally, we utilize this result to construct an optimization technique that maximizes the number of gestures recognized under the energy budget constraints while satisfying the recognition accuracy requirements. Our extensive evaluations demonstrate that the proposed analytical model is valid for wearable IoT applications, and the optimization approach increases the number of recognized gestures by up to 2.4× compared to a manual optimization.

This paper introduced a new swarm based optimization technique for tuning Power System Stabilizer (PSS) that attached to a synchronous generator in a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system. PSS which is installed with Lead-Lag (LL) controller is introduced to elevate the damping capability of the generator in the low frequency mode. For tuning PSS-LL parameters, a new technique called Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is proposed. This method mimics the social behavior of humpback whales which is characterized by their bubble-net hunting strategy in order to enhance the quality of the solution. Based on eigenvalues and damping ratio results, it is confirmed that the proposed technique is more efficient than Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Evolutionary Programming (EP) in improving the angle stability of the system. Comparison between WOA, PSO and EP optimization techniques showed that the proposed computation approach give better solution and faster computation time.

Recent advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have enabled ubiquitous smart devices to sense and process various kinds of data. However, these innovations also raise the concern of efficient data transmission. Tackling the above issue is nontrivial since the resource constraints and environmental randomness in IoT require a lightweight transmission scheme while guaranteeing system stability. In this paper, we formulate the transmission scheduling problem of multi-interface IoT devices as a concave optimization, aimed at accommodating the randomness of the IoT environment within the network capacity. By applying the Lyapunov optimization technique, we divide the stochastic problem into a series of low-complex subproblems, which can be individually solved per time slot, and develop a dynamical control algorithm that does not require a priori knowledge such as link states. Theoretical analysis shows that our algorithms nicely bound the average queue length and are asymptotically optimal. Finally, extensive simulation results verify the theoretical conclusions and validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Optimal inclusion of a photovoltaic system and wind energy resources in electrical grids is a strenuous task due to the continuous variation of their output powers and stochastic nature. Thus, it is mandatory to consider the variations of the Renewable energy resources (RERs) for efficient energy management in the electric system. The aim of the paper is to solve the energy management of a micro-grid (MG) connected to the main power system considering the variations of load demand, photovoltaic (PV), and wind turbine (WT) under deterministic and probabilistic conditions. The energy management problem is solved using an efficient algorithm, namely equilibrium optimizer (EO), for a multi-objective function which includes cost minimization, voltage profile improvement, and voltage stability improvement. The simulation results reveal that the optimal installation of a grid-connected PV unit and WT can considerably reduce the total cost and enhance system performance. In addition to that, EO is superior to both whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and sine cosine algorithm (SCA) in terms of the reported objective function.

For the precise simulation performance, the accuracy of fuel cell modeling is important. Therefore, this paper presents a developed optimization method called Chaos Game Optimization Algorithm (CGO). The developed method provides the ability to accurately model the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The accuracy of the model is tested by comparing the simulation results with the practical measurements of several standard PEMFCs such as Ballard Mark V, AVISTA SR-12.5 kW, and 6 kW of the Nedstack PS6 stacks. The complexity of the studied problem stems from the nonlinearity of the PEMFC polarization curve that leads to a nonlinear optimization problem, which must be solved to determine the seven PEMFC design variables. The objective function is formulated mathematically as the total error squared between the laboratory measured terminal voltage of PEMFC and the estimated terminal voltage yields from the simulation results using the developed model. The CGO is used to find the best way to fulfill the preset requirements of the objective function. The results of the simulation are tested under different temperature and pressure conditions. Moreover, the results of the proposed CGO simulations are compared with alternative optimization methods showing higher accuracy.

The aim of this paper is to develop a general methodology for the optimum design of magnetic head sliders in improving the spacing characteristics between a slider and disk surface under static and dynamic operating conditions of hard disk drives and to present an application of the methodology to the IBM 3380-type slider design. To generate the optimal design variables, the objective function is defined as the weighted sum of the minimum spacing, the maximum difference in the spacing due to variation of the radial location of the head, and the maximum amplitude ratio of the slider motion. Slider rail width, taper length, taper angle, suspension position, and preload are selected as the design variables. Before the optimization of the head, the effects of these five design variables on the objective function are examined by a parametric study, and then the optimum design variables are determined by applying the hybrid optimization technique, combining the direct search method and successive quadratic programming. From the obtained results, the effectiveness of optimum design on the spacing characteristics of magnetic heads is clarified. [S0742-4787(00)03701-2]

This article describes how cloud computing has emerged as a strong competitor against traditional IT platforms by offering low-cost and “pay-as-you-go” computing potential and on-demand provisioning of services. Governments, as well as organizations, have migrated their entire or most of the IT infrastructure to the cloud. With the emergence of IoT devices and big data, the amount of data forwarded to the cloud has increased to a huge extent. Therefore, the paradigm of cloud computing is no longer sufficient. Furthermore, with the growth of demand for IoT solutions in organizations, it has become essential to process data quickly, substantially and on-site. Hence, Fog computing is introduced to overcome these drawbacks of cloud computing by bringing intelligence to the edge of the network using smart devices. One major security issue related to the cloud is the DDoS attack. This article discusses in detail about the DDoS attack, cloud computing, fog computing, how DDoS affect cloud environment and how fog computing can be used in a cloud environment to solve a variety of problems.

SUMMARYThis paper presents an optimal trajectory planning method for industrial robots. The paper specially focuses on the applications of path tracking. The problem is to plan the trajectory with a specified geometric path, while allowing the position and orientation of the path to be arbitrarily selected within the specific ranges. The special contributions of the paper include (1) an optimal path tracking formulation focusing on the least time and energy consumption without violating the kinematic constraints, (2) a special mechanism to discretize a prescribed path integration for segment interpolation to fulfill the optimization requirements of a task with its constraints, (3) a novel genetic algorithm (GA) optimization approach that transforms a target path to be tracked as a curve with optimal translation and orientation with respect to the world Cartesian coordinate frame, (4) an integration of the interval analysis, piecewise planning and GA algorithm to overcome the challenges for solving the special trajectory planning and path tracking optimization problem. Simulation study shows that it is an insufficient condition to define a trajectory just based on the consideration that each point on the trajectory should be reachable. Simulation results also demonstrate that the optimal trajectory for a path tracking problem can be obtained effectively and efficiently using the proposed method. The proposed method has the properties of broad adaptability, high feasibility and capability to achieve global optimization.

In the power distribution network, real power loss and voltage profile management are critical issues. By providing active and reactive power support, both of these issues can be managed. This paper utilized the Meta heuristic-based method for the optimal size and placement of distributed generation (DG) and capacitor (QG) sources for loss reduction by incorporating network current carrying capacity constraint in the optimization problem. The overall problem is optimized using an upgraded method of the fitness assignment and solution chasing based on the aggregate approach called Multi-objective Whale Optimization Algorithm (MWOA). Wind and solar photovoltaic sources are utilized as the distributed generation with their probabilistic outputs. The developed method is tested using two feeders of practical Bahir Dar Distribution Network, Ethiopia. The results of loss minimization and voltage profile management with MWOA are compared with multi-objective particle swam optimization (MPSO) with an equal number of iteration to show the superiority of the developed method.
