Surface water pollution through the discharge of untreated wastewater is on the increase globally. Efforts made using conventional techniques had not yielded the needed results. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of some native aquatic plants for the removal of some physico–chemical parameters from car wash wastewater effluents in Yenagoa metropolis. The plants used for this study were lemna minor, nymphaea nouchalli, pistia-stratiotes, eichhornia crassipes and ceratophyllum demersum; while the physico-chemical parameters investigated in this study include pH, DO, COD, BOD5, NO3, PO4 and turbidity. The wastewater samples collected from car wash bays were analysed to determine the level of the physico-chemical parameters concentrations using standard methods. The experiment was conducted in a green house for 42 days retention period. The results indicated that the cultured plants reduced the physico-chemical parameters to a minimum level, except DO, which increased in concentration. Therefore, they are considered good bioremediators of the parameters under review and the bioremediation potentials of the plants are in the order of P. stratiotes > L. minor > E. crassipes > N. nouchalli> C. demersum. It is therefore recommended that these plants should be used to treat wastewater effluents based on the investigated physico-chemical parameters.

Abstract Distribution and diversity of macrophytes in relation to some physico-chemical factors in the Ketar River were studied from December, 2017 to November, 2018. Physico-chemical parameters and macrophytes were collected from three stations along the river for eight months. Onsite measurements and laboratory work of physico-chemical was analyzed as recommended by APHA [31]. Macrophytes were collected manually using belt transect method. Except for pH and surface water temperatures, all the physico-chemical parameters measured showed no significant difference spatially. During the study period, sixteen macrophyte species belonged to fourteen families were identified. Among the identified macrophyte, 11 of them were emergent, while 3 were rooted with floating leaves and 2 free-floating. Free-floating macrophytes were shared the highest abundance followed by emergent. This research observed that the site (site 3) that was exposed to minimal human impact was rich in diversity and abundance of macrophytes. All the sites were dominated by emergent macrophytes that attained the highest relative frequency followed by rooted emergent species. Azolla nilotica and Pistia stratiotes were shared the highest abundance and were the dominant macrophyte with the relative frequency of 7.24% and density of 40.91%, and 7.93% and 26.54%, respectively. Under a favorable environment, nutrient loading from nearby creates more favorable conditions for the infestation of the invasive species (A. nilotica and P. stratiotes) to flourish and out-compete the other species of macrophyte. Therefore, anthropogenic activities that enhance nutrient addition to the River should be regulated.

The present research study was conducted on Health risk assessment of heavy metals due to untreated wastewater irrigated vegetables in Faisalabad city. Samples of soil, groundwater, wastewater and vegetables were collected from different regions of the city where wastewater irrigation was in practice. The ground water and wastewater samples were analyzed for all the basic physical and chemical parameters and heavy metals like (Nickel, Lead, Cadmium, Zinc, Copper and Chromium). Most of the chemical parameters where in access to standard limits of USEPA. It was found that the majority the heavy metal concentrations in soil are deteriorated because of wastewater. Analysis of heavy metals in Vegetables that their concentrations in vegetables were in the order of Zn>Ni>Cr>Cu>Pb>Cd. The concentration of heavy metals like (Zn, Ni, Cr and Cu) in vegetables were above the safe limit. While TF was lower for all metals except Cd. HRI was maximum for Pb and Ni in all vegetables. HQ was maximum for Ni, Pb and Cd. The vegetables tested were not safe for human use, especially those directly consumed by human beings

In the present study, we conducted an experiment to evaluate the effects of duckweed (Lemna minor) as feed on fish production in polyculture. The experiment had 2 treatments where in treatment 1 (T1) ponds were supplied with duckweed as feed and in treatment 2 (T2) ponds were kept as control (without supply of duckweed). Average survival rates in T1 and T2 were 90 and 89%, respectively. The specific growth rates (SGR) were higher in T1. Calculated net production in T1 was 6.25 tons ha.-1 yr.-1 and in T2 was 2.84 tons ha.-1 yr.-1. The ranges of physico-chemical parameters analyzed were within the productive limit and more or less similar in all the ponds under both treatments during the experimental period. There were 24 genera of phytoplankton under 5 major groups and 10 genera of zooplankton under 3 major groups found in the experimental ponds. The net production in T1 was significantly higher than that of T2 indicated the use of duckweed as feed for fishes is economically sustainable in polyculture. The safety of vegetables has been an issue of public concern in recent years. Thus, heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Mn, Pb, Zn and Fe) in the shoot and root of Sacciolepis africana, Ceratophyllun demersum and Pistia stratiotes in Owena reservoir, Nigeria were tested using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer while some Physico-chemical parameters of water were measured using multi parameter hand-held meter. The water quality result revealed that the average temperature, turbidity, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and pH were 27.77oC, 7.21NTU, 101.83Ω/S, 6.95mg/l and 6.55 respectively. The single factor pollution index showed that Temperature (0.93), DO (0.99) and pH (0.99) fell within the category of slight pollution while turbidity (1.20) and conductivity (1.02) fell within the medium pollution category. Sacciolepis africana bio-concentrated more heavy metals than Ceratophyllun demersum and Pistia stratiotes. The HRIs of Cu, Cd, Mn, Zn and Fe indicated no risk since all values were less than 1. However, there was a potential risk for Pb through the consumption of the plants despite that the HRI of the shoot of Ceratophyllun demersum (0.65) and root of Pistia stratiotes (0.46) were less than 1. The THQ and HI values for the root and shoot of all the vegetables were less than 1, indicating that they are unlikely to result in any chronic systemic risk-averse health effects.
