Purpose: The authors assessed common content knowledge of health-related fitness in a national representative sample of preservice physical education teachers in the United States. Methods: Six hundred and twenty-one preservice physical education teachers from 68 physical education teacher education (PETE) programs located in different regions in the United States completed the 40 multiple choice items health-related fitness knowledge test during the semester prior to their student teaching. In addition, each PETE program coordinator/department head completed the PETE Program Information Questionnaire. Results: The mean percentage correct on the test was 61.3% (M = 24.5, SD = 4.9). Analyses of variance and t-test analyses indicated that common content knowledge of health-related fitness was not a function of sex, program size, or region of the United States. Discussion/Conclusions: These data suggest that preservice physical education teachers in the United States lack common content knowledge of health-related fitness and warrant the attention of PETE programs.

The article reveals the features of building a system of physical education in the United States of America, which contributes to the development of a positive attitude and interest of students in physical physical exercise and sports. It is emphasized that this system is supranational in nature: American teachers and trainers use the experience of physical education of many other countries. Specificity of the organization of school sports and physical education in the US is seen through the prism of the numerous victories of the American team at the Olympic Games, as well as the successful performances of American athletes at various international competitions.

Twenty nine ostomy children (16 girls and 13 boys) with external openings in their urinary or intestinal tract for waste collection were assessed for fitness using the Health Related Physical Fitness test. The children, as a group, were discovered to be only in the 20th percentile in overall fitness when compared to the norm in the United States. Using guidelines established by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, all 29 children were identified as candidates for an individualized adapted physical education program.

Abstract The current COVID-19 pandemic has sparked growing global interest in understanding the spread and outcome of the virus. From previous pandemics, we have learned that several demographic, geographic, and socio-economic factors may play a role in increasing risk of infection. Our objective was to examine the association of timing of mandated stay-at-home orders at the county-level with COVID-19 cases, daily case rate and mortality in the United States of America (USA). Publicly available data were used to perform a cross-sectional study of USA counties with > 100,000 population, and at least 50 confirmed cases per 100,000 people as of May 24, 2020. The three outcome variables were: total cases/100,000, daily case rate (DCR), and total deaths/100,000. Out of 3142 USA counties, 569 met the inclusion criteria. Of all variables, the timing of state-mandated stay-at-home order had the most significant effect on all three outcomes after adjusting for multiple socio-demographic, geographic and health related factors. Additional factors with significant association with increased cases and deaths include population density, housing problem, unemployment, African American race, and age > 65. Policymakers at the local level must take this into consideration while planning for interventions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
