Improving Grade VII Students’ Achievement in Procedure Text Through Still Pictures

This study was conducted as an attempt to improve students’ writing achievement in aprocedure text by using Still Pictures. The method of the study was Classroom ActionResearch with two cycles and six meetings. The subject of the study was the students ofGrade VII students’ MTs. S. Syahbuddin Mustafa Nauli. The research was conducted intwo cycles and each cycle consists of three meetings. The instruments for collectingdata were taken from writing tests as quantitative data. The result shows theimprovement of the students’ score from orientation test to Cycles I and II tests. Themean of the students’ score for orientation test as Test I was 50.41, Cycle I test was66.25, and Cycle II test was 85.41. The total percentage of the improvement fromOrientation test to Cycles I and II tests was 99.2 %. It can be concluded that the use ofStill Pictures improves students’ achievement in writing a procedure text. Thequalitative data taken from Observation Sheet and Diary Notes show that the students’were enthusiastic and attracted in writing a procedure text because the Still Picturesencourage their creativities and ideas to write better. For English teachers, it issuggested to use Still Pictures as one alternative media of teaching writing a proceduretext.

This study attempts to improve students’ writing achievement in recount text through Think-Pair-Share Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VIII-1 SMPN 1 Pematangsiantar. The number of the students was 32 students, consisted of 5 males and twenty seven females. The research was conducted in two cycles and consisted of six meetings. The instruments for collecting data were writing tests as the quantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet, interview sheet and questionnaire sheet as qualitative data. Based on the writing score, students’ scores kept improving in every test. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the first test as a pre-test was 57.84, for the second test as a post test I was 73.56, for the third test as a post test II was 77.56. Based on diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that students were actively involved in writing process. The result of the research showed that Think-Pair-Share Strategy can improve students’ achievement in writing recount text.   Keywords: Think Pair Share, Writing, Recount text, Action research

This study was attempted to improve students’ achievement in writing narrativetext by watching movies. This study was conducted by using classroom action researchin two cycles. Cycle I consisted of four meetings while Cycle II consisted of twomeetings. The subject of the research was class VIII-A SMP SWASTA IMMANUELMEDAN. The number of the students was 34. To collect the data, the instruments werequantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data was the scores of the studentsand the qualitative data was interview sheets, observation sheets, and diary notes. Basedon the writing score, students’ score were improving in every test. It can be seen inOrientation test, Test I in Cycle I, and Test II in Cycle II. In Orientation test, the meanscore was 37.94 then it was improved to 65.85 in Test I. In the end of cycle II, the meanscore for test II was again improved to 83.41. Based on interview sheets, observationsheets and diary notes, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. In line withthe data, it showed that the application of watching movies significantly improvedstudent’s achievement in writing narrative text. English teachers were suggested to givemovies to be watched as guidance on students’ narrative writing in the class.

ABSTRACT This study concerns with the improve students’ creativity ability in writing descriptive paragraph through mind mapping technique. The objective of this study is to discover whether the use of mind mapping could significantly improve students’ creativity ability in writing descriptive paragraph. With support from the theory by Buzan. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out in two cycles in 4 meetings. The subject of this study was the Administration Public course in 2ed semester of Students Universitas Merdeka Malang which consisted of 20 students. The data will take in quantitative and qualitative data. Where quantitative data collected by giving descriptive writing tests that related to topic in TA( (tugas akhir) and calculating the mean of students’ scores. The quantities data were collected by the students’ score in (80. 55) which was higher than the first cycle (74.95) and orientation test (69.65). The qualitative data were collected observation and questionnaire sheets. The analyzed qualitative data gathered from the observation and questionnaire sheet during cycle I and II. It was found that students also made improvement students creativity in writing descriptive paragraph by using mapping on their TA (tugas akhir) while guidance and teaching learning proses . Despite all students got problems at 1st meeting, they could handle their difficulties and more enjoy their lesson. By the process they become active and creative in writing descriptive paragraph and  qualitative data showed students strongly agreed by mind mapping  had solve students problem in writing TA (tugas akhir) that related to writing descriptive paragraph. The result of the research showed that mind mapping significantly improved students’ ability in writing TA (tugas akhir) that related to descriptive paragraph text.

ABSTRACT   This study concerns on improving students’ achievement in writing analytical exposition text through guided writing technique. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the study was class XI IA-1 students of SMA Negeri 17 Medan, which consisted of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles, which each cycle consisted of three treatments. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (analytical exposition writing assessment) and qualitative data (diary notes, interview sheet, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet). Based on the students’ scores, students’ writing skill kept improving in every assessment given. The mean of the students’ score for the first competence as orientation test was 68, 12, the second competence test was 71,93, the third competence test was 79,87, and the total percentage of the improvement from the first competence test to the third competence test was 93,7%. Based on diary notes, observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, and interview report, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well. The students were active, interested, and enthusiastic in writing. The results indicated that Guided Writing Technique improved the students’ writing achievement in analytical exposition text.   Keywords: students’ achievement, writing, analytical exposition text, guided writing technique

This study aims to improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive text through Mind Mapping technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VIII-1 SMP Negeri 3 Tanjung Beringin which consisted of 30 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and every cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of collecting data were quantitative data (writing tests) and qualitative data (diary notes, observation sheet, and interview sheet). In analyzing the data, the students’ mean was 60.46 for the test I, in the test II was 67.5, and 74.06 in test III. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet, and interview sheet, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well, students were active, enthusiastic, and interested in writing. The research showed that the Mind Mapping Technique significantly improved students’ writing achievement in descriptive text.

The subject was students of Grade VIII, SMP Negeri 1 Stabat. Two classes from five parallel classes were taken by lottery technique which divided into two groups, 30 students as control group and 30 students as experimental group. The instrument used in this research is to find quantitative data. The analysis in were showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant  = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58, t-observed value 3.006 > t-table value > 2.000. The findings indicate that using Wordless Picture Book significantly affected the students’ writing achievement. So, English teachers are suggested to use Wordless Picture Book in order to improve students’ achievement in writing recount text.

This study was carried out to discover students’ speaking competence in reporting a procedure text by using video. It was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject was students of Grade X, State Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri: SMAN) 5 Binjai, which consisted of 42 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments used to collect the data were speaking tests as quantitative data and Observation Sheet, Interview, Questionnaire, and Diary Notes as qualitative data. The results of the speaking tests showed that the students’ score improved in every test. The mean of the students’ score in Orientation test was 51.17, the mean of the students’ score in Cycle I was 69.05, and the mean in Cycle II was 80.31. The mean score in Cycle II was the highest, so it can be said that the students’ speaking competence improved from 51.17 to 80.31. Based on the Observation Sheet, Interview, Questionnaire, and Diary Notes, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well. The findings of the study indicate that using Video significantly improved the students’ speaking competence. So, English teachers are suggested to use Video in order to improve the students’ speaking competence in reporting a procedure text.

The objective of this study is to find out whether the application of Index Card Match Strategy can improve students’achievement in writing procedure text. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was the grade elevent students of SMA N 1 Lau Baleng. The research was conducted in two cycles. The first cycle consisted of three meetings and the second cycle consisted of two meetings. The instruments for collecting data used writing test for quantitative data and as the quantitaive data used diary notes, questionnaires sheet, interview and observation sheet. Based on the writing tests result, the students score improved in every test. In orientation test, the mean score was 50,28. In cycle 1 the mean score was 64,96 and the mean score cycle II was 77,35. Based on the diary notes and observation sheet, students shown their progress in learning writing English by the application of Index Card Match Strategy and the classroom action research. Students enjoyed the process of learning writing English concluded from the interview sheet. In line with the data, it was found that the index card match strategy can improve students’achievement in writing pocedure text.
