360◦ photogrammetry captures the surrounding light from a central point. To process and transmit these types of images over the network to the end user, the most common approach is to project them onto a 2D image using the equirectangular projection to generate a 360◦ image. However, this projection introduces redundancy into the image, increasing storage and transmission requirements. To address this problem, the standard approach is to use compression algorithms, such as JPEG or PNG, but they do not take full advantage of the visual redundancy produced by the equirectangular projection. In this study of the 360SP dataset (a collection of Google Street View images), we analyze the redundancy in equirectangular images and show how it is structured across the image. Outcomes from our study will support the developing of spherical compression algorithms, improving the immersive experience of Virtual Reality users by reducing loading times and increasing the perceptual image quality.

Architectural design is one of those areas that have actively employed interactive design tools such as CAD/CAM software. In order to add a realistic view of the design results in the 3D work process, there have been several recent attempts to employ a virtual reality technology that allows architects to explore design in 3D space. However, VR’s weakness is that common interaction tasks, such as navigation and selection, are still not supported conveniently in 3D space. In addition, VR devices are generally unfamiliar to the average person and are too expensive to use. This paper presents a VR framework that makes the design task easily achieved by employing a PDA interface for a VR interaction applied to street-view emotional color design problems.

Images of encounters between animals and drones or Google Street View cars are quite viral on the web. This article focuses on the different regimes of animacy and conflicts of affects in these images using an anthropo- semiotic approach. It investigates how other- ness reveals something that exceeds us, from the materiality of the machine to systems of values. It suggests that the disturbance of ani- mal presence in contemporary digital images helps us to read media technologies.
