The purpose of the present study was to investigate integrally the relationships among task conflict, relationship conflict, team efficacy, and task performance of the Air Force Combat Flight Team. Also, the study illustrated whether participative decision-making moderated the relationship between task conflict and team efficacy, and the relationship between relationship conflict and team efficacy. Surveys and supervisor-rating performance data of 284 combat flight teams of two Air Force fighter pilots were collected for assessing the aforementioned relationships. Analyzing through structural equation modeling, the results indicated that task conflict was negatively related to team efficacy and task performance. Relationship conflict was negatively related to team efficacy whereas they were positively related with task performance. Moreover, team efficacy mediated the relationship between task conflict and task performance, and the relationship between relationship conflict and task performance. Furthermore, participative decision-making moderated the relationships of task conflict and relationship conflict with team efficacy such that these negative relationships were stronger when wingman pilot’s perception toward leader pilot’s participative decision-making was low. We discuss the implications of these results, study limitations, and practical suggestions for future research.

We investigated the mediating effects of positive affect and strengths use in the relationship between perceived organizational support for strengths use (POSSU) and employees' task performance. Data were gathered at 2 time points, separated by a 2-week interval, from 157 employees working in various Chinese enterprises. We applied structural equation modeling and PROCESS macro analysis to the data. The results indicate that POSSU was positively related to task performance and that this relationship was mediated by strengths use. In addition, positive affect and strengths use played a sequential mediating role in the relationship between POSSU and task performance. However, positive affect was not a significant mediator in the POSSU–task performance relationship. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed in the context of the literature on POSSU and task performance.

The authors examine cross-cultural differences in the effects of gender diversity on group identification and performance using workgroups from American and Chinese firms. Nationality is found to moderate the relationship between gender diversity and group identification in that gender diversity associates more positively with group identification in Chinese workgroups than in American workgroups. Nationality does not moderate the gender diversity–group performance relationship: although the Chinese sample shows a positive association between gender diversity and group performance, the American sample shows no association. A second longitudinal study explores the mechanisms of relationship conflict and task conflict by which gender diversity benefits group performance in China. Results show that gender-diverse groups perform better than homogeneous groups by decreasing relationship conflict and task conflict. Future research directions and practical implications are discussed.

The aim in this study was to examine the relationship between task and relationship conflict and their effect on team decision-making. A sample of 120 participants, divided into 40 teams, was recruited. We found that the relationship of task and relationship conflict was moderated by the decision-making process and teams performed better when making good use of task conflict, while relationship conflict was reduced.

Abstract This paper reports on an exploratory study examining the relationship between text characteristics, perceived difficulty and task performance in sight translation (ST). Twenty-nine undergraduate interpreters were asked to sight-translate six texts with different properties. Correlation analysis shows that Sophisticated Word Type and Mean Length of a T-unit are, respectively, the lexical and the syntactic variables having the highest correlations with all the three dependent variables (i.e. perceived difficulty, accuracy and fluency in ST performance). Surprisingly, the discoursal variables are weakly or modestly correlated with the dependent variables. Thematic analysis of the students’ reflective essays points to two hypothesized causal links among the three Ps in ST: task properties may cause decoding difficulties and cognitive overload in the cognitive process, which in turn lead to inaccuracy and dysfluency in ST performance. The research findings lend empirical support to the “shallow-scan hypothesis” in previous research. Finally, this study proposes a three-tier conceptual framework to inform and guide future research to operationalize variables in ST empirical studies. The pedagogical implications of ST are also discussed.

AbstractThis research investigates subgroup formation as an important mediator in the goal interdependence-intragroup conflict linkage. Specifically, it proposes that subgroup formation will mediate the relationship between cooperative goal interdependence and intragroup conflict, but not for competitive goal interdependence and intragroup conflict. Further, competitive goal interdependence is posited to have direct, positive effects on intragroup conflict. Using structural equation modeling analyses with 79 student project teams, the findings revealed that subgroup formation fully mediated the relationship between cooperative goal interdependence and task and process conflict, but only partially mediated the relationship between cooperative goal interdependence and relationship conflict. As predicted, subgroup formation did not mediate the relationship between competitive goal interdependence and intragroup conflict; however, competitive goal interdependence was negatively, rather than positively, related to intragroup conflict.

Purpose – Organizations in India are multicultural in nature. In this context, cultural intelligence is a tool, which can increase an individual’s ability to interact with people outside his/her culture. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of cultural intelligence on task performance as well as to investigate the mediating role of cultural adjustment between the two. Design/methodology/approach – Extensive review of literature was done to acknowledge the cultural intelligence and task performance concept. Data for the study has been collected from the 225 managers working in nationalized banks in Jammu province (J&K, India). Data collected has been validated using confirmatory factor analysis and hypotheses have been tested through structural equation modeling. Findings – The study reveals that cultural intelligence significantly contributes toward task performance. The findings further reveal full mediation of cultural adjustment between cultural intelligence and task performance. Research limitations/implications – The study has been conducted in Indian cultural context, which can be extended to other Asian countries. Further, more outcomes of cultural intelligence can be taken into consideration in future for better understanding of the concept. Practical implications – The study contributes toward cultural intelligence theory. Organization should provide cultural training to the managers before sending them to out of home state assignment, which helps to understand the culture of that state and effectively interact with people belonging to that place. Originality/value – The paper empirically identifies the relationship between cultural intelligence and task performance in Indian context. Further, this relationship has been explored by using cultural adjustment as a mediator between the two. The model developed can be used for future research keeping it as a base.

Purpose This study aims to investigate how the strength of ties (i.e. strong ties and weak ties) in megaproject networks influences project performance in terms of types of conflicts. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire survey was undertaken with professionals in Chinese megaprojects and 445 valid responses were received. A conflict-based theoretical model was developed and tested with structural equation modeling. Findings The results indicated that task conflict had a constructive effect on project performance, whereas relationship conflict and process conflict had destructive effects. Both strong and weak ties positively affected project performance, and that weak ties exerted greater effects on performance. The introduction of conflicts significantly weakened the effect of strong ties on project performance. Strong ties indirectly affected project performance via task conflict and relationship conflict, whereas weak ties affected performance only through task conflict. Task conflict had a constructive effect on project performance, whereas relationship conflict and process conflict had destructive impact. Research limitations/implications This study identified the positive effect of strength of ties on project performance as well as the constructive and destructive roles of conflicts. Furthermore, the findings provided evidence that strength of ties and conflicts were critical factors for project performance. While, there are still limitations. There are other attributes of megaproject networks, such as network nodes’ characteristics and network structure, which may influence conflicts and project performance. Future research would be conducted to explore the role of these variables. Meanwhile, because different types of conflicts may mutually transform under certain conditions, future research would also address this issue in megaprojects. Practical implications As for the management strategies, project stakeholders should know the existence of project networks, exactly assess their resource endowment, especially their external and internal relationship network. In accordance with changes of the project network, stakeholders should share knowledge and learn techniques about how to respond to relationship disturbances, thus reducing relationship conflict and process conflict. Furthermore, stakeholders should place an emphasis on fostering and reinforcing communication and trust, thus effectively resolving task conflict, ambiguity and uncertainty engendered from network ties in a megaproject network. Originality/value The main contribution of this study is threefold. First, this study will enrich the literature on strength of ties by accentuating the roles of conflicts in megaproject context. Second, this study contributes to the theoretical development of a conceptual model for explaining the interrelationships among strength of ties, conflicts and project performance. Third, this study will respond to the call “which dimension, i.e. strong ties or weak ties, is more influential” by exploring the direct and indirect effects of strength of ties on project performance.

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between psychological detachment from work in nonworking time and it’s antecedents such as general self-efficacy and rumination behavior, and the relationship between psychological detachment from work in nonworking time and task performance. Also, this study tests the moderating effect of outcome-oriented culture in the relationship between psychological detachment from work and task performance. Using the survey research method, data were collected from 259 employees who were working in a variety of organizations in Korea. To reduce the effect from the common method bias, task performance of participants was rated by their peers or supervisors. The results indicate that general self-efficacy is positively related with psychological detachment, rumination behavior is negatively related with psychological detachment, and psychological detachment from work is not related with task performance. It is found the relationship between psychological detachment and task performance is moderated by outcome-oriented culture. When employees who perceive organizational culture is more outcome-oriented, there is a negative relationship between psychological detachment and task performance. In contrast, when employees who perceive organizational culture is less outcome-oriented, there is a positive relationship between psychological detachment and task performance. Based on there results, implication of results, future research tasks, and limitations of this study were discussed.

Abstract The current study investigates the link between Intra Group Conflict (Task Conflict, Relationship Conflict) and Group Performance of the employees in the Telecom sector of Pakistan. Employees’ performances are improved by harmony, friendly environment and lack of conflict in an organization. To find out the practicality of these assertions, 200 questionnaires were distributed among employees of five main mobile telecom companies namely Telenor, Mobilink, Ufone, Zong and Warid at their head offices. 122 questionnaires were received back that resulted in 61% response rate. The paper addressed the extent of employees’ perception about Task Conflict and Relationship Conflict in their groups and also investigated that how these types of Intra-group conflict were linked to the overall performance of their groups. A theoretical model was developed to test these hypotheses. For the measurement of intra group conflict (Task conflict, relationship conflict) and group performance two valid and reliable instruments were used. Furthermore for analysis of these data Correlation and regression were used. The result of the study showed significant positive relationship between task conflict and group performance. However, negative association was found between relationship conflict and group performance. At the end, conclusion, limitations, and future research bearings are likewise highlighted.
