This study presents the morphological characteristics of immature and adult male stages of Paraseiulus amacroporus Faraji, Jalaeian and McMurtry, 2008 (Phytoseiidae) collected from pistachio trees, Pistacia atlantica Desf. (Anacardiaceae), Shiraz vicinity (Fars province), South west Iran. The genders of the deutonymphal stage can be determined by the number of paired setae in the opisthogaster (six in female vs. four in male).

Many species of cutworms (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are important agricultural pest. They feed on roots and foliage of their host plants. Traditionally these species are identified based on morphological characteristics of adults. Hence identification of specimens in poor condition, immature stages and also closely related species or cryptic species is a difficult task. The basics of biological and ecological studies largely rely on an accurate species identification; consequently these investigations are impacted by potential misidentifications. In this study, we amplified 5' region of mitochondrial c cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene (DNA barcode region) of various common true cutworm species including Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel, 1766), Agrotis exclamationis (Linnaeus, 1758), Peridroma saucia (Hübner, 1808) and Xestia c-nigrum (Linnaeus, 1758) from agricultural fields of Guilan province (North of Iran). We were able to detect 66 conservative Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) among the targeted pest species and eventually design specific primers and develop a multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay as a molecular diagnostic tool for immature stages of two the most common and abundant species including A. ipsilon and X. c-nigrum in Guilan province.

Abstract Cercospora species are associated with leaf spot symptoms on various host plants. In this research, nine species of the genus on some medicinal and economic crops were found in different locations in Kohgiluyeh and Boyerahmad Provinces (southwestern Iran) and examined according to morphological characteristics of stromata, conidiophores, conidiogenous cells and conidia. Results showed that Cercospora species on Cichorium intybus (C. cichorii) and Nasturtium officinale (C. nasturtii) are new for the mycobiota of Iran. However, characteristics of Cercospora on Plantago lanceolata are very similar to the description of C. plantaginis, but morphologically indistinguishable from C. apii s. lat. Other species have already been reported from other parts of Iran, but are new in southwestern Iran. Furthermore, Rumex crispus and Trifolium resupinatum are new hosts for C. apii and C. zebrina in Iran, respectively.

Abstract The pistachio bark beetle, Chaetoptelius vestitus (Mulsant & Rey, 1861) is a serious pest of pistachio trees. Despite its phytosanitary importance, some aspects of its biology are still unclear. For example, determining the sex of this beetle is usually complicated by the lack of a discrete, externally visible gender-specific character. Here, the morphological characteristics of C. vestitus were studied in order to detect discriminative features for sexing living beetles. The shape of the seventh visible tergite effectively enabled the separation of the sexes. This method can be quickly learned, is non-destructive and permits sex determination of living C. vestitus adults with 100% accuracy and without damaging the insects. Sex determination using external morphology was confirmed by dissection under a stereomicroscope and by rearing experiments. These morphological criteria were further successfully verified on insects collected on seven other sites in Tunisia.

The adult male, female, immature stages, and egg of a new species of whitefly, Lipaleyrodes emiliae, are described from Taiwan and Hong Kong. The species has been found commonly on Emilia sonchifolia (Asteraceae). Scanning electron micrographs, photographs and drawings are included with descriptions of immature stages and adults. The immatures and adults of L. emiliae are compared with those of Bemisia tabaci.

The adult female, adult male and all immature stages (except the male prepupa and pupa) of a new species of Fiorinia (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae), F. yongxingensis Liu, Cai & Feng sp. n., collected from Hainan Province, China, are described and illustrated. A key is provided to identify the Fiorinia species known to occur in Hainan Province, China. The new species may become a significant pest on coconut palms.

We evaluated the factors that affect the food resource use by Plagioscion ternetzi using three approaches: spatial, seasonal, and ontogenetic changes. Fish were sampled between March 2000 and February 2001 and March 2003 and February 2004 in the Sinhá Mariana and Chacororé lagoons, wetlands of the Pantanal Matogrossense. Fish was the predominant food in the diet, but shrimps and insects have been also consumed. The diet of P. ternetzi was significantly different between lagoons, but no difference was detected between dry and flood periods. In Sinhá Mariana lagoon, the diet mainly consisted of Psectrogaster curviventris, in both periods. In the flood period in Chacororé lagoon, fish was the dominant food (especially Astyanax spp., Leporinus spp. and Schizodon borellii), and in dry, shrimp and Eigenmannia spp. The Spearman coefficient indicated no correlation between the abundance of caught fish species and their abundances in the diet of P. ternetzi in Sinhá Mariana lagoon, and a strong negative correlation at Chacororé lagoon, although some very consumed preys were numerically abundant in the environment. Despite the intake of insect and shrimp, P. ternetzi was piscivorous since immature stages. A correlation between each item and the size classes of P. ternetziwas tested by means of Pearson correlation that showed that the changes in the use of resources over ontogenetic development have been represented by increased intake of P. curviventris in Mariana lagoon, and S. borellii at Chacororé lagoon, accompanying the increase in the size of the predator. In this way, the results suggest that several factors can be involved in the use of food resources by P. ternezi, among them the abundance, the size and morphological characteristics of the prey.

Sexual dimorphism is recorded among the puparia of six species of Aleurocanthus from Taiwan, including Aleurocanthuslauriphaga sp.n. from Cinnamomum osmophloeum. A key is provided to the puparia of seven species of this genus knownfrom Taiwan, with illustrations of immature stages and the adult male and female of the new species. The flocculent waxsecretion pattern in the puparia of this new species is atypical amongst Aleurocanthus species. Newly recorded from Tai-wan is A. citriperdus Quaintance & Baker, and the record of A. spinosus (Kuwana) from Taiwan is discussed. A list of recorded host plants of Aleurocanthus species from Taiwan is provided.

Ceroplastodes dugesii (Signoret), the Mexican wax scale, is the type species of the genus but previous descriptions have not included some important characters. With the collection of new material of this species off Acacia from Mexico, the opportunity is taken to illustrate and either describe or redescribe all stages apart from the adult male.
