Psychometric Properties of the Spanish Form of Templer's Death Anxiety Scale

The aim of this study was to translate and adapt Templer's Death Anxiety Scale into Spanish and examine mean scores, internal consistency, temporal stability, and factor structure for a sample of 187 Spanish students, 147 women and 40 men, of an average age of 20.8 yr. Mean scores were 6.2 ( SD = 3.4) for women and 5.0 ( SD = 2.7) for men; these differences were statistically significant. Cronbach coefficient alpha was .73, and test-retest correlation over 3 wk. was .87. Analysis by principal components with varimax rotation produced four factors with eigenvalues greater than one; these were labeled (1) Cognitive-Affective, (2) Pain and Illness, (3) Stimuli Related to Death, and (4) Awareness of Time Passing. Obtained results were consistent with previous studies carried out on other versions of the scale and indicate this Spanish form of the Death Anxiety Scale is useful for evaluating death anxiety in Spanish-speaking subjects in Spain.

The aims were to estimate the psychometric properties of the Spanish form of the Death Depression Scale and to compare these with those of other versions of the scale. The Death Depression Scale was administered to a sample of 218 Spanish student nurses, together with Templer's Death Anxiety Scale and measures of general depression and anxiety. The Cronbach coefficient α was 83, and a 4-wk. test-retest correlation was .87. The correlations with scores on other tests were similar to those obtained in former studies. After applying a principal components factor analysis with varimax rotation, four factors with eigenvalues greater than one were identified. These factors were labeled Death Sadness, Death Finality, Meaninglessness of Life, and Feeling of Loss. Generally speaking, the results favour consideration of the Death Depression Scale as a valid and reliable means of assessment among Spanish-speaking individuals.

The aim of this work was first to translate into Spanish and then to adapt Abdel-Khalek's Death Obsession Scale (DOS) for Spanish subjects, and to establish the scale's psychometric properties. The scale was translated from its Arabic and English forms and administered, along with other instruments, to a sample of 344 Spanish university students. The results obtained indicate high coefficients of internal consistency and stability, as well as adequate concurrent validity and a factor structure which is meaningful and significant, such outcomes being similar to those obtained in previous studies with Arab or English samples. These results justify the use of the Death Obsession Scale in evaluating preoccupation with death among Spanish-speaking subjects.

Analysis of data from 255 U.S. pharmacists provides support for the consistency and validity of this short-form conservatism scale. The scale returned a coefficient alpha of 0.82, and principal components analysis yielded a strong general conservatism factor. Varimax rotation produced five factors consistent with the factor structure of the original Conservatism Scale.

Abstract Background Dental anxiety is associated with negative experiences of dental treatment and dental-visiting behavior. The Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) is widely used for assessing dental anxiety. The study aims to establish the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the MDAS based on the Taiwan sample (i.e., T-MDAS). Methods The T-MDAS and dental-visiting behavior and experience were assessed for 402 adult subjects recruited from community and clinical sites. The following psychometric properties were assessed: (a) internal consistency, (b) temporal stability, (c) criterion-related validity (i.e., the association with the score of Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear, IDAF-4C), (d) discrimination validity (i.e., the difference in scores between the subjects with and without a habit of a regular dental visit, and (e) the construct validity from a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results. The T-MDAS showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.88) and temporal stability (ρ = 0.69, p < 0.001). The score was significantly correlated with the score of the IDAF-4C (ρ = 0.76, p < 0.001) and differed between subjects who regularly visited a dentist or not, supporting good criterion-related validity and discrimination validity. Results from CFA supports good construct validity. Furthermore, higher dental anxiety was related to the lack of a regular dental visit, feeling pain during treatment, and feeling insufficient skills and empathy of dentists. A higher proportion of high-dental anxiety subjects in female subjects (8.5%), compared to male subjects (5.0%), was noted. Conclusions The T-MDAS is a valid tool for assessing adult dental anxiety. The score is highly associated with dental-visiting behavior and experience of dental patients.

Evaluating appreciation of measures attending to pupil diversity (EMAD) is a scale for evaluating the understanding of measures describing pupils' cultural and diversity needs among the staff responsible for such measures in Spanish primary schools. Its 9 Likert-scale items correspond to the various types of action in this area that are currently being promoted in Spain. The principal objective of this study was to assess the scale's factor structure and internal consistency, to which end the scale was completed by the heads of the Departments of Orientation of 140 Spanish primary schools. Corrected item-total correlations and Cronbach alpha (.91) indicated adequate scale homogeneity. Principal components analysis followed by varimax rotation indicated two factors jointly accounting for 71.4% of total variance, one associated with actions involving modification of syllabuses, and the other with actions not requiring such changes. Cronbach alphas were .89 and .79 for the two factors.

Background: There are presently no validated scales to adequately measure the stigma of suicide in the community. The Stigma of Suicide Scale (SOSS) is a new scale containing 58 descriptors of a “typical” person who completes suicide. Aims: To validate the SOSS as a tool for assessing stigma toward suicide, to examine the scale’s factor structure, and to assess correlates of stigmatizing attitudes. Method: In March 2010, 676 staff and students at the Australian National University completed the scale in an online survey. The construct validity of the SOSS was assessed by comparing its factors with factors extracted from the Suicide Opinion Questionnaire (SOQ). Results: Three factors were identified: stigma, isolation/depression, and glorification/normalization. Each factor had high internal consistency and strong concurrent validity with the Suicide Opinion Questionnaire. More than 25% of respondents agreed that people who suicided were “weak,” “reckless,” or “selfish.” Respondents who were female, who had a psychology degree, or who spoke only English at home were less stigmatizing. A 16-item version of the scale also demonstrated robust psychometric properties. Conclusions: The SOSS is the first attitudes scale designed to directly measure the stigma of suicide in the community. Results suggest that psychoeducation may successfully reduce stigma.

This study evaluated the internal consistency and factor structure of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5–Brief Form (PID-5-BF), and its relationship to aggression in 438 incarcerated Australian male offenders. Results provide support for the internal consistency and five-factor and bifactor structure of the PID-5-BF. The PID-5-BF total score, as well as the domains of Antagonism, Disinhibition, and Negative Affect (low), demonstrated significant relationships with aggression. These results provide preliminary support for the psychometric properties of the PID-5-BF within prison settings, and suggest that a PID-5-BF assessment may be useful within forensic settings to screen for broad maladaptive personality characteristics that are indicative of a greater propensity for aggressive behavior.

Our purpose in this study was to develop a scale to measure preference for online social interaction (POSI). The psychometric properties of the POSI Scale were tested with 2 separate samples of Chinese teenagers (age 13–18 years). The responses of the first group (n = 352) were used to explore the factor structure of the scale. The responses of the second group (n = 593) were used to test construct validity and consistency reliability of the POSI Scale. The results indicated that (a) the POSI Scale consists of three dimensions: online social interaction frequency, online social interaction propensity, and perception of superiority of online social interaction compared to face-to-face social interaction; and (b) the POSI Scale has good structural validity and internal consistency and reliability, and is a reliable and valid instrument for measurement of adolescents' preference for online social interaction, especially in the context of Chinese teenagers.
