Abstract We propose to use the principles of functional modularity to cope with the essential complexity of statistical production processes. Moving up in the direction of international statistical production standards (GSBPM and GSIM), data organisation and process design under a combination of object-oriented and functional computing paradigms are proposed. The former comprises a standardised key-value pair abstract data model where keys are constructed by means of the structural statistical metadata of the production system. The latter makes extensive use of the principles of functional modularity (modularity, data abstraction, hierarchy, and layering) to design production steps. We provide a proof of concept focusing on an optimisation approach to selective editing applied to real survey data in standard production conditions at the Spanish National Statistics Institute. Several R packages have been prototyped implementing these ideas. We also share diverse aspects arising from the practicalities of the implementation.

Coastal-related data are four-dimensional in nature, varying not only in location and water depth but also in time. The heterogeneous and dynamic nature of coastal-related data makes modeling and visualization of these data a challenging task. A new object-oriented spatiotemporal data model to represent dynamic three-dimensional coastal data is proposed in this study. In the proposed model, a set of abstract data types allowing suitable spatiotemporal operations is defined to manipulate complex coastal data. In addition, a logical data model is proposed for the design of a spatiotemporal database. The proposed object-oriented and logical data models are implemented in a real-world coastal information management system in Hong Kong. An elegant visualization framework for displaying the coastal data, based on the concept of a time–depth bar, is presented in the case study.

The original RailML specification comes from 2002 and was defined using XML. Files in the RailML standard can be used for storing and exchanging data between numerous interfaces of railway ICT systems. Current version 2.4 includes rolling stock and railway traffic management, timetables, passenger information as well as booking and selling tickets. In the upcoming version of the RailML 3.1 standard, the subcheme is included, which is intended for the description of railway interlocking systems. In addition, compliance with the object-oriented, abstract data model for the railway infrastructure, defined in the UIC IRS 30100 standard (RailTopo-Model, RTM), will be ensured. In the paper, the authors discuss the current state of RailML and its perspective. Particular attention is paid to the use of RailML for the description of railway interlocking systems. The authors also present their proprietary software which allow to edit, visualize and verify RailML files.

An effective analysis of the battlefield situation and spatio-temporal data model in a sea battlefield has great significance for the commander to perceive the battlefield situation and to make the right decisions. Based on the existing spatio-temporal data model, the present paper gives a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of sea battlefield data, and chooses the object-oriented spatio-temporal data model to modify it; at the same time this paper introduces sea battlefield space-time algebra system to define various data types formally, which lays the foundation for the establishment of the sea battlefield spatio-temporal data model.

By analyzing the attributes of three-dimensional space data model, the integrated 3D spatial data adopts object-oriented method for digital landslide modeling. It achieves spatial data modeling for landslide geological entity. An experimental case is given to indicate the feasibility of this approach for spatial data modeling.

Abstract The data base requirements for concurrent design systems are discussed. An object-oriented data base, which allows for definition of complex objects, specification of relationships between objects, and modular expandability without affecting the existing information is defined. The data base is developed based on the object-oriented data model implemented in Smalltalk-80. An assumption-based truth maintenance system for maintaining the dependency relationships between design and manufacturing information is described.
