Abstract In the last decades, electric power produced through photovoltaic conversion has been increasing because of the need to reduce fossil fuel burning. Recently, photovoltaic systems have become more competitive and their role in the renewable energies market share is steadily gaining in importance. Improvements in the power electronics employed in the DC/AC conversion are topics of interest in the quest for more efficient and eventually reduced-cost inverters. The goal of this paper is to perform an investigation of control strategies and propose a topology for a single-phase DC/AC converter for photovoltaic arrays using the simulation software Power System Computer Aided Design/ Electromagnetic Transient Design and Control (PSCAD/EMTDC). The circuit proposed in this paper employs an isolating transformer to a grid-connected photovoltaic inverter. The control strategy proposed uses the instantaneous reactive power theory (p–q theory) and phase-locked loop (PLL). The p-q theory uses two virtual axes in the Park Transformation, which provide to the control system a good dynamic response, accuracy, and decoupling between the control and power system. Computer simulations using the electromagnetic transient software PSCAD show the efficiency of the proposed strategy for a single-phase inverter. The control strategy and topology are quite simple and easy to implement in the future using a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). The results provide insights into new power electronics solutions, which can improve the efficiency and efficacy of the current available in DC/AC converters for photovoltaic systems.

This paper proposes an enhanced control strategy for mitigating state-transition oscillations in active and reactive power responses of self-synchronized converter system to secure the islanded power system stability. The self-synchronized converter is well known for “grid-forming” that is able to operate to stand-alone mode (SAM) providing grid voltage and frequency without phase synchronization units. Although the grid-forming (GFM) is self-synchronized, the inherent synchronization principle causes system degradation in which should maintain a point of common coupling (PCC) voltage for critical loads as well as transitions from grid-connected mode (GCM) to SAM and vice versa. Therefore, this paper focuses on resolving the inherent oscillatory issues in GFM self-synchronized converter system (especially adopted ‘synchronverter’ principle), and proposes a control strategy for controllability improvement based on stability analysis for smooth state-transition under islanded power system. The efficacy of the proposed control method is verified through a high-fidelity electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation with case studies on 30kW synchronverter system and further experimental hardware-in-loop system (HILS) test with Opal-RT (OP-5707) platform.

A Power System is actually a vast system that requires an outstanding plan for maintaining the continual flow of electricity. When a fault occurs at the power system, number of difficulties arises because of transients in system. so to attenuate these transients, power electronics based devices like FACTS are utilized. A unified power flow controller (UPFC) is one among different power electronics controller which can dispense VAR compensation, line impedance control and phase shifting. The thought is to see potential of UPFC to require care of active and reactive power movement within the compensated line (including UPFC) and to shrink the falloff of the bus voltage in case of grounding fault within the cable. power system block consisting of simulink is used for numerical analysis. Simulation outcomes from MATLAB reflects major improvement in the overall system’s behaviour with UPFC in sustain the voltage and power flow even under severe line faults by proper injection of series voltage into the cable at the point of connection. outcomes shows how the UPFC contributes effectively to a faster regaining of the power system to the pre-fault conditions.

The concept of electric springs (ESs) has been proposed as a new solution for stabilizing power grid fed by intermittent renewable energy sources. With a battery or active power source (DC, on the inside), the ESs can provide both active and reactive power compensations. So far, three typical topologies of single-phase ESs have been reported. Unlike traditional devices where power generation follows the load demand, the ESs are associated with non-critical loads form the so-called smart loads that transfer the fluctuated power to the non-critical loads, adaptively, according to the intermittent nature of power generation. After reviewing the main control strategies of single-phase ESs, the paper analyzes their advantages and disadvantages as well as their suitable applications. Comparisons among different control strategies on a specific topology version are implemented. Finally, conclusions and possible future trends are pointed out.

Nowadays, the application of distributed energy sources (DES) has been extensively employed to serve the power system by supplying the power into the grid and improving the power quality (PQ). Therefore, DES is one solution that can efficiently overcome the energy crisis and climate change problems. The DES, such as solar photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), and battery energy storage systems (BESS), are incorporated to form the microgrid (MG), which are interfaced with the power system. However, interfacing MG to the power system is undoubtedly a big challenge. Therefore, more focus is required on the control strategy to control the MG with the power system. To address the PQ problems, a controlled MG integrated with a hybrid shunt active power filter (HSAPF) is provided in this work. For controlling the MG integrated HSAPF, different control strategies are applied. In this work, a learning-based incremental conductance (LINC) technique is used as a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for tracking the maximum power in PV and WT. The voltage source inverter (VSI) of HSAPF is controlled using a wavelet-based technique with a synchronous reference frame (SRF). The main focus is to improve the PQ by compensating the harmonics and regulating the reactive power in both grid-interactive and islanded condition and also supply continuous and adequate power to the non-linear load. The power system model has been developed with MATLAB/Simulink tool, which shows the efficiency of the proposed method. The results obtained have been satisfactorily under various operating conditions and can be validated further using the real-time dSPACE.

Increasing penetration level of wind power integration has a significant impact on low-frequency oscillations of power systems. Based on PSD-BPA simulation software, time domain simulation analysis and eigenvalue analysis are employed to investigate its effect on power system low-frequency oscillation characteristic in an outward transmitting thermal generated power bundled with wind power illustrative power system. System damping enhances markedly and the risk of low-frequency oscillation reduce when the generation of wind farm increase. In addition, dynamic reactive power compensations apply to wind farm, and the simulation result indicates that it can improve dynamic stability and enhance the system damping.

To solve the problem of harmonic pollution in distributed power system, a new type of grid-connected inverter with harmonic compensation is studied in this paper. This system adopts a unified control strategy with decoupled active and reactive power based on grid voltage orientation. Both the grid connection and harmonic compensation are realized together in one inverter, which improves the inverter’s utilization efficiency and protects the power grid from harmonic pollution. The simulation and experimental results are shown to prove the correctness of the control strategy.
