Typical commercial restorative dental compositions in the form of medical resins contain in-organic fillers, multifunctional methacrylates and photoinitiators. The currently used resins for direct composite restoratives have been mainly based on acrylic chemistry to this day. The main problem with the application and radiation curing process is the shrinkage of photoreactive dental materials during and after UV curing. Shrinkage of restorative radiation curable dental composites is a phenomenon of polymerization shrinkage, typical behavior of multifunctional methacrylates during the polymerization process. The important factors in curing of dental composites are: the kind and concentration of the used methacrylate, its functionality, double bond concentration, the kind and concentration of the added photoinitiator and UV dose emitted by the UV-lamp. They are investigated multifunctional 1,3-butanediol dimethacrylate (1,3-BDDMA), diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DEGDMA), triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA), trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), 2,2-bis-[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryxloyloxypropyl) phenyl]propane (Bis-GMA), ethoxylated Bis-GMA (EBPDMA) and dodecandiol dimethacrylate (DDDMA). Reduction of polymerization shrinkage of restorative dental compositions is at the moment a major problem of dental technology. This problem can be solved through an application of photoreactive non-tacky multifunctional methacrylates in the investigated dental adhesive fillings.

Abstract This manuscript describes dental compositions contain in-organic fillers, multifunctional methacrylates and photoinitiators. The main problem by application and UV curing process is the shrinkage of photoreactive dental materials during and after UV curing process. Total shrinkage of UV curable dental composites is a phenomenon of polymerization shrinkage, typical behavior for multifunctional methacrylates during polymerization process. The important factors by curing of dental composites are: kind and concentration of used methacrylates, their functionality, double bond concentration, kind and concentration of added photoinitiator and UV dose. They are investigated UV-curable dental compositions based on 2,2-bis-[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryxloyloxypropyl)phenyl]propane (Bis-GMA) and containing such multifunctional monomers as 1,3-butanediol dimethacrylate (1,3-BDDMA), diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DEGDMA), tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate (T3EGDMA), trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA), polyethylene glycol 200 dimethacrylate (PEG200DA). Reduction of polymerization shrinkage of dental compositions is at the moment a major problem by dental technology.

Commercially available UV curable restorative materials are composed of inorganic filler hydroxyapatite, multifunctional methacrylate, photoinitiator and alkoxylated acrylate. Especially, the application of alkoxylated monomers with different alkoxylation grade allows the reduction of polymerization shrinkage which plays the major role by application of low shrinkage composites as high quality restorative dental materials or other adhesive materials in the form of UV-polymerized self-adhesive acrylics layers (films). There are several ways to reduce polymerization shrinkage of restorative compositions, for example, by adjusting different alkoxylated acrylic monomers, which are integral part of investigated UV curable restorative composites. This article is focused on the studies of contraction-stress measured as shrinkage during UV-initiated curing of restorative composites containing various commercially available alkoxylated acrylates. Moreover, studies with experimental restorative materials and recent developments typical for UV curing technology using special photoreactive monomers are described.

A number of new liquid urethane-based oligomers were synthesized, characterized and used to formulate the dental composites. Compressive strength and viscosity were used as a screen tool to evaluate the formed composites. Commercial available bisphenol A glycidyl methacrylate and urethane dimethacrylate-based systems were used as controls. Degree of conversion, shrinkage, water-sorption, solubility, flexural strength and diametrial tensile strength were evaluated. The results show that using mixed acrylate/methacrylate or methacrylates with different length to derivatize diisocyanates could be a good strategy to synthesize urethane-based oligomers in a liquid state. The developed triethylene glycol dimethacrylate-free urethane-based composites showed significantly reduced water sorption and solubility, decreased shrinkage and enhanced mechanical strength as compared to commercial resin-based ones.

This study is aimed at exploring the effects of SiO2 nanoparticles on the crosslinking and mechanical and thermal properties of UV curing acrylic epoxy coating. The curing polymerization process and thermal and mechanical properties of UV-curable acrylate epoxy system have been evaluated with or without the presence of SiO2 nanoparticles. To fabricate the UV curing acrylic epoxy/SiO2 nanocomposite coating, nano-SiO2 particles (0.5–5 wt.% by weight of resin) were added in the photo-curable system using sonication for 3 h. Various techniques for characterization have been used, such as FESEM (field emission scanning electron microscope), FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), TGA (thermogravimetry analysis), gel fraction, and swelling degree analyses. FESEM data indicated that at the content of 2.5 wt.%, nanosilica was homogeneously dispersed in the coating procedure. However, once added 5 wt.%, large aggregation portions were found inside the coating matrices. Surprisingly, nano-SiO2 could play dual roles, as both UV absorbers and nanoreinforcers, in this nanocomposite coating. Besides, data from FTIR, gel fraction, and swelling degree analyses confirmed the role of SiO2 nanoparticles as UV absorbers that reduced the conversion performance of acrylate double bonds, thus increased slightly the swelling degree of coating. In addition, incorporation of SiO2 nanoparticles (as nanofillers, at content of 2.5 wt.%) in the polymer matrix enhanced significantly the abrasion resistance and thermal stability of the coating, by 60% (from 98.3 to 158.4 lite/mil) and 9°C (from 348°C to 357°C), respectively.

SUMMARY Objective Monomers such as triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) can leach from dental composites. TEGDMA-induced apoptosis in human pulp has been reported. However, the apoptotic (pro or anti) proteins involved in this process remain unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine which apoptotic proteins are enhanced or suppressed during TEGDMA-induced apoptosis. Materials and Methods Human pulp fibroblasts (HPFs) were incubated with different TEGDMA concentrations (0.125-1.0 mM) and cytotoxicity was determined. TEGDMA was shown to be cell cytotoxic at concentrations of 0.50 mM and higher. The highest concentration with no significant cytotoxicity was then incubated (0.25 mM TEGDMA) with the HPFs. Cell lysates were then prepared and the protein concentrations determined. Human Apoptosis Array kits were utilized to detect the relative levels of 43 apoptotic proteins. Results HPFs exposed to TEGDMA showed significant increases in multiple pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bid, Bim, Caspase 3, Caspase 8, and Cytochrome c at 24 hours. Some anti-apoptotic proteins were also altered. Conclusions The results indicated that TEGDMA activates both the extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways.

м.н. Каливраджияна Э.С. The development of technologies based on the use of low-toxic materials will make it possible to begin their application in medicine in the near future. The use of nanoparticles of silver, copper, silicon, zinc, titanium, cobalt as a modifying additive will make it possible to actively influence the structure of the starting materials and change their properties, namely, improve the physicomechanical, physicochemical and toxicohygienic properties of materials. Nanosized silicon particles introduced into fixing dental materials lead to an improvement in the physicochemical, physicomechanical properties of crystallizing materials, and the low thermal conductivity of silicon can increase its working time and reduce heat generation during the crystallization reaction. Since the volume of manipulations depends on these characteristics, when fixing orthopedic structures on abutment teeth, it would be advisable to bring the working time of hardening to a pure hardening time, which will increase the volume of manipulations with the prepared mass without deteriorating its properties. The development of high-strength, biocompatible, high-tech nanoplastics for the bases of removable plate prostheses is an urgent problem to improve the quality of life of patients. Modification of acrylic polymer with nano-sized particles of silver and silicon will improve such physical and mechanical properties as impact strength, strength, temperature resistance, barrier properties, and reduce polymer shrinkage at the stage of polymerization, in contrast to the already known domestic and expensive imported polymers. Nanosized particles of silicon, silver are cocatalysts of methyl methacrylate, affecting the reduction of the amount of residual monomer after the polymerization process, thereby increasing the sanitary-chemical and toxic-hygienic characteristics of the polymer. All of the above made it possible to formulate the goal of research on nanostructured materials under the guidance of the professor …dedicated to the memory of the professor, d.m.s. The presented paper concerns current knowledge of commercial and alternative photoinitiator systems used in dentistry. It discusses alternative and commercial photoinitiators and focuses on mechanisms of polymerization process, in vitro measurement methods and factors influencing the degree of conversion and hardness of dental resins. PubMed, Academia.edu, Google Scholar, Elsevier, ResearchGate and Mendeley, analysis from 1985 to 2020 were searched electronically with appropriate keywords. Over 60 articles were chosen based on relevance to this review. Dental light-cured composites are the most common filling used in dentistry, but every photoinitiator system requires proper light-curing system with suitable spectrum of light. Alternation of photoinitiator might cause changing the values of biomechanical properties such as: degree of conversion, hardness, biocompatibility. This review contains comparison of biomechanical properties of dental composites including different photosensitizers among other: camphorquinone, phenanthrenequinone, benzophenone and 1-phenyl-1,2 propanedione, trimethylbenzoyl-diphenylphosphine oxide, benzoyl peroxide. The major aim of this article was to point out alternative photoinitiators which would compensate the disadvantages of camphorquinone such as: yellow staining or poor biocompatibility and also would have mechanical properties as satisfactory as camphorquinone. Research showed there is not an adequate photoinitiator which can be as sufficient as camphorquinone (CQ), but alternative photosensitizers like: benzoyl germanium or novel acylphosphine oxide photoinitiators used synergistically with CQ are able to improve aesthetic properties and degree of conversion of dental resin.
