AbstractThe distribution and abundance of marine organisms are directly or indirectly a function of biotic and abiotic features such as sediment and water properties. In this study we analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution of Callinectes danae in two distinct littoral areas of the northern coast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil and associated them with local geomorphologic features and environmental factors. We collected specimens on a monthly basis, from July 2001 to June 2003, using a fishing boat equipped with double-rig net, in two locations: Ubatuba (UBA) and Caraguatatuba (CAR). Collecting was carried out in seven transects with different depths, which were further subdivided into two regions: bay region (5, 10, 15 and 20 m deep); and inner shelf region (25, 30 and 35 m deep). Samples from different periods and transects differed significantly in abundance. A positive correlation was found between the abundance of C. danae and the following parameters: temperature at the bottom, organic matter content and Phi (grain diameter). By contrast, a negative correlation was established between specimen abundance and salinity at the bottom. The total abundance was highest in 5 m deep transects in both regions. Summer was the season when individuals were least abundant in both areas. We concluded that the spatial and temporal distribution of C. danae are determined by a set of environmental factors and not just by one single factor.

Abstract: This study evaluated the relationships between environmental factors and the spatio-temporal distribution of H. pudibundus, with the hypothesis of differential occupation in coastal areas of southeastern Brazil. The samplings took place monthly in January-December 2000 period, along nine transects from 2 to 40 m of depth, in Ubatuba region, northern coast of São Paulo. We collected 1808 individuals of H. pudibundus. The highest abundance was recorded in winter in the transects 10-25 m deep. Abundance was positively correlated with organic matter content and texture sediment (phi values). With the retreat of the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) in autumn and winter, the sediment swirls, suspending the detritivore and filter-feeding macrofauna, increasing the food availability. Sites characterized by finer sediment offer higher food availability, besides facilitating H. pudibundus burying behavior. Due to its opportunistic predatory behavior, this species feeds on a variety of organisms, including mollusks, annelids and foraminifera, which are preys more abundant in the studied area and in sediments of finer grain size.

This study investigated the importance of variations in environmental factors affecting the abundance patterns of decapods on the southeastern Brazilian coast. Sampling was carried out monthly from January 1998 through December 1999 in Ubatumirim and Mar Virado, Ubatuba region, using a commercial shrimp fishing boat equipped with double-rig nets. Six areas adjacent to rocky shores were chosen. Bottom-water samples were collected using a Nansen bottle, to measure the temperature and salinity. Sediment samples were also obtained by means of a Van Veen grab, for determination of texture and organic-matter content. The association of environmental factors with species abundance was evaluated by Canonical Correspondence Analysis (α = 0.05). Forty-one species of Decapoda were used in the multivariate analysis. The analysis indicated that sediment texture (phi) and bottom temperature were the main factors correlated (p < 0.05) with the spatial and temporal abundance of the species. Considering the study region as faunal transition zone, including a mixture of species of both tropical and subantarctic origin, the species responded differently to environmental factors, mainly temperature. It is conceivable that the decapods adjust their distribution according to their intrinsic physiological limitations, possibly as a result of the available resources.

ABSTRACT This study describes the reproductive and recruitment patterns of the swimming crab Achelous spinimanus (Latreille, 1819) in the Ubatuba region of the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil. Crabs were captured monthly from January 1998 to December 1999 in 18 sites located in three bays (Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, and Mar Virado), using a commercial fishing boat. In each sampling area, bottom temperature, salinity, and organic matter content were recorded. A total of 1,911 individuals were captured: 350 adult males, 475 non-ovigerous adult females, 584 adult ovigerous females, and 502 immature individuals. Reproductive females were more abundant in deeper areas; this migration might be a strategy to improve larval dispersion and survival. Ovigerous females were found year-round, indicating a continuous reproduction, and their abundance was positively correlated with temperature. During the 2-year survey, crabs with all gonadal development stages were found. We can infer that this region provides suitable resources for the development of A. spinimanus.

This is the first study to examine how different environmental factors may influence the distribution of swimming crab Achelous spinimanus across geographically distant and distinct habitats. We analyzed the influence of bottom water temperature and salinity, sediment texture and organic matter content on the spatiotemporal distribution of A. spinimanus. The crabs were collected from January 1998 until December 1999 by trawling with a shrimp fishing boat outfitted with double-rig nets. The sampling took place in Ubatumirim (UBM), Ubatuba (UBA) and Mar Virado (MV) bays, located in the northern coast of São Paulo State (Brazil). These three bays were chosen as they differed in many physiographic features. We captured 1,911 crabs (UBM = 351; UBA = 1,509; MV = 51), and there were significant differences in abundance between bays and between stations. The distribution of A. spinimanus was primarily associated with sediment features: abundance was higher in stations with sandy sediments classified as gravel, very coarse sand, and intermediate sand. Portunoidea usually burrow in the sediment for protection against predators and to facilitate the capture of fast prey. In addition, the station with the highest abundance of A. spinimanus was also naturally protected from fishing activities, and composed of heterogeneous sediment, in terms of grain size. Hence, the combination of a favorable sediment heterogeneity and protection from fishery activities seemed to be effective modulators of the abundance and distribution of A. spinimanus in these bays.

The temporal and spatial variation of Paralonchurus brasiliensis density (fish per m2) in relation to environmental factors was studied on the coasts of Ubatuba and Caraguatatuba, south-eastern Brazil. The fish were collected by shrimp fishery trawl on a monthly basis from January to December, 2002. Seven depths were previously established and for each one the temperature, salinity, organic matter content and grain size of the sediment (φ) was measured. The seasonal analysis of temperature and salinity indicated the presence of the water masses South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) and Coastal Waters (CW) acting in the study area. A total of 29,808 fish were collected during the study period. The highest densities were registered during the summer and autumn indicating an association with CW. The fish population moved to shallow depths during the intrusion of the cold water mass, SACW. The highest densities were registered in depths where the sediment composition ranged from fine sand to silt–clay. Thus, the temperature and type of the sediment are the main environmental factors which affect the spatial–temporal variation of P. brasiliensis density in south-eastern Brazil.

AbstractSpyra A. Woodland ponds as an important habitat of Hippeutis complanatus (Linnaeus 1758) occurrence - effect of environmental factors and habitat preferences. Ekológia (Bratislava), Vol. 33, No. 2, p. 101-115, 2014.In industrial areas, woodland ponds are refuges of biological diversity. The impact of environmental factors such as the physico-chemical properties of water, organic matter content in bottom sediments and various types of substratum on the occurrence of Hippeutis complanatus were assessed. In Poland, it is considered to be a species with an established but unspecified risk, deserving the status of endangered species due to the decline of wetland environments. A Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) revealed associations between the distribution patterns of freshwater snails species and the concentration of nitrates (NO3) and calcium (Ca) as well as pH and the organic matter content in the bottom sediments. Based on statistical relationships, results of study suggest that the kind of substratum (Typha latifolia remains, Phragmites australis remains, fallen leaves of waterside trees) has an impact on the occurrence of freshwater snails including Hippeutis complanatus for which the preferred substratum is the fallen leaves of waterside trees and sites with a high content of organic matter in bottom sediments. The study has shown that isolated water bodies located in forest complexes can be refuges for species that occur in small numbers in other types of aquatic environments.

ABSTRAKWaduk Jatibarang terletak di Kecamatan Gunungpati, Kota Semarang. Waduk tersebut digunakan sebagai pengendali banjir, tempat pariwisata, kegiatan menangkap ikan, dan rencana akan dibuat sebagai sumber air bersih melalui PDAM. Pemanfaatan waduk untuk berbagai keperluan kemungkinan dapat menurunkan kualitas air dari waduk tersebut. Penelitian ini mengkaji kesuburan perairan Waduk Jatibarang berdasarkan distribusi dan kelimpahan bakteri heterotrofik. Bakteri heterotrofik berperan penting dalam sistem perairan sebagai perombak dan meremineralisasi bahan-bahan organik menjadi komponen anorganik sederhana. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui distribusi kelimpahan bakteri heterotrofik, kandungan bahan organik total, hubungan kelimpahan bakteri heterotrofik dengan bahan organik total, dan status kesuburan waduk Jatibarang. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif bersifat studi kasus.  Sampling dilakukan pada tanggal 27 April dan 11 Mei 2016 di lima (5) stasiun dengan kedalaman 1 meter. Penghitungan kelimpahan bakteri menggunakan metode Total Plate Count (TPC). Pengujian kandungan bahan organik total menggunakan metode Titrimetri Permanganat SNI 06-6989.22-2004. Hasil pengamatan menunjukkan distribusi spasial-temporal bakteri heterotrofik fluktuatif dan relatif tinggi, dengan kelimpahan berkisar (45 – 131) x 105 cfu/ml. Kandungan bahan organik total berkisar 11,771 - 21,883 mg/l. Hubungan antara bakteri heterotrofik dengan bahan organik total yaitu hubungan yang terbalik menunjukkan tidak adanya hubungan antara keduanya. Status kesuburan perairan Waduk Jatibarang berdasarkannilai kelimpahan bakteri heterotrofik (45 – 131) x 105cfu/ml > (22 – 120) x 105 cfu/ml dan kandungan bahan organik total 11,771 – 21,883 mg/l perairan bersifat eutrofik. Kata kunci: Waduk Jatibarang; bakteri heterotrofik; bahan organik total; eutrofik ABSTRACTJatibarang Reservoirs located in District Gunungpati, Semarang. This study examines the productivity waters Jatibarang Reservoir based on the distribution and abundance of heterotrophic bacteria. Heterotrophic bacteria play an important role in aquatic systems as to change and remineralize organic materials into simple inorganic components. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of the abundance of heterotrophic bacteria, total organic matter content, abundance of heterotrophic bacteria relationships with total organic matter and productivity status Jatibarang Reservoirs. The method used in this research is descriptive case study. The sampling was conducted on April 27 and May 11, 2016 in five (5) stations with a depth of 1 meter. Calculation of the abundance of bacteria using Total Plate Count (TPC). Tests using a total organic matter content titrimetric method SNI 06-6989.22-2004 permanganate. The results showed the spatial-temporal distribution of heterotrophic bacteria volatile and relatively high, with an abundance range (45-131) x 105cfu/ml. Total organic matter content ranges (11.771 - 21.883) mg/l. The relationship between of heterotrophic bacteria with total organic material that is an inverse relationship showed no relationship between both. The productivity status of the dam water Jatibarang based on the abundance of heterotrophic bacteria (45-131) x 105cfu/ml > (22-120) x 105cfu/ml and organic matter content of the total 11.771 - 21.883 mg/l  waters are eutrophic.Keywords: Jatibarang Reservoir; heterotrophic bacteria; total organic matter; eutrophic

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of various environmental factors on splash erosion based on the funnel method under natural conditions. The relationship between splash and wash erosion were also studied. The intermediate timescale study (2012–2016, from May to October) was conducted in the Western Polish Carpathians where Inceptisols predominate. The splash erosion rate (kg m−2) was variable and showed a strong correlation with environmental factors, including rainfall parameters, land use (black fallow, meadow), slope gradient (0°, 11°), and also the particle size of soil and usage time (organic matter content, OM). The splash erosion rate on the slope with black fallow was 95 times higher than in the meadow and up to 20 times higher than in flat area. The average downslope splash erosion was 75% higher than the upslope splash erosion, and the soil particles were detached to maximum heights of 50 cm (downslope). There was a positive correlation between splash erosion and wash and a negative correlation between splash erosion and OM.

The spatial and temporal distribution, abundance and assemblage structure of polychaete communities in the Kneiss Islands (central Mediterranean Sea) was studied at 42 stations selected among seagrass Zostera (Zosterella) noltei Hornemann meadows and unvegetated habitats sampled from April 2014 to January 2015. The Kneiss Islands represent a site of international interest in terms of their ornithological diversity (Important Bird Area, Ramsar Site and SPAMI). A total of 18,026 individuals and 92 species of polychaetes belonging to 25 families were identified. Analysis of the trophic structure reveals that the majority of stations are strongly dominated by deposit feeders (51.2%), followed by carnivores (34.8%) and suspension feeders (14%). Polychaete diversity and abundance were higher on the vegetated stations. Four polychaete assemblages are identified using MDS analysis. The distribution of polychaete assemblages are influenced by edaphic factors, particularly sediment structure and organic matter content. Seasonal variations of the polychaete community patterns at 20 stations show a maximum abundance and diversity during spring and summer and a minimum during winter. Seasonal fluctuations follow the seasonal variations of the environmental factors such as temperature and salinity, and correspond also to the lifestyle of the dominant species.

Spatial and temporal distribution of stream macroalgae in streams from southeastern Brazil were assessed for one year. The fluctuations in macroalgal species composition and environmental factors were monitored monthly. The region exhibit a tropical climate, with defined rainy and dry seasons. Nineteen species were found, with a predominance of Chlorophyta (52.7% of the species), followed by Cyanobacteria (26.3%), Ochrophyta and Rhodophyta (10.5% each). Scytonema arcangeli had the highest number of records (63.6%), while Mougeotia capucina occurred in all sampling sites. Community structure had low similarity (20-26%) and the environmental factors showed a weak contribution to the distribution pattern observed. Despite this, the light availability at the stream-bed seems to be a major influence on the macroalgal seasonal dynamics. We suggest that macroalgae communities are predominantly composed of rare species, and this could explain the lack of a clear spatial and temporal variation pattern of these organisms.
