Detection of ferromagnetic objects in local magnetic anomaly of the Baltic Sea In geological researches several kinds of methods are applied to discovering the natural resources. Planes, helicopters and UAVs (UnmAnned Vehicle) are used in researches in large areas. The gravity, electromagnetic and magnetic methods, which are used in geological researches, are presented in this paper. The special attention was paid to magnetic systems installed on mobile platforms. The magnetic field of the Earth obtained from mathematical model was compared to the real magnetic field in the selected part of the Baltic Sea. The results of the calculations showed that the mathematical model of the Earth's magnetic field does not consider local magnetic anomalies. The strong local magnetic anomalies cause serious problems with detection of underwater objects. Special problems appear in the magnetic system on a helicopter, which are presented in this paper.

AbstractA mathematical model of the dynamics of the Baltic Sea is considered. A problem of variational assimilation of sea surface temperature (SST) data is formulated and studied. Based on variational assimilation of satellite observation data, an algorithm solving the inverse problem of heat flux restoration on the interface of two media is proposed. The results of numerical experiments reconstructing the heat flux functions in the problem of variational assimilation of SST observation data are presented. The influence of SST assimilation on other hydrodynamic parameters of the model is considered.

Some problems associated with forecasting water cooling in the entrance to the Baltic Sea are examined, using a diagnostic study from the severe ice winter of 1986/87 as a starting point. In the study, measured and numerically simulated data demonstrate that surface water cooling can be well simulated with the mathematical model presented by Omstedt (1987). Forecast tests during the same winter also indicate that the model may provide useful forecast information. However, because of the limited numbers of temperature and salinity profile measurements, the forecasts had to be accomplished with diagnostic calculations. These calculations will then produce the necessary initial data for the forecasts.

The aim of the paper is to present the use of marine magnetic surveying for mapping the location of anthropogenic objects on or buried in the seabed. The main purpose of collecting magnetic data is to detect local sources of increased magnetic field intensity, and to indicate the presence of ferromagnetic objects in the investigated area. The work contains the results of researches carried out in the Baltic Sea area by the Maritime Institute in Gdansk. Hydromagnetic surveys are implemented mainly in the framework of pre-investment studies in order to inventory objects in the sea bottom, which can hinder the construction of subsea installations or affect the technological process of construction. Based on the interpretation of measurement results the occurrence of anthropogenic objects such as wrecks, linear objects (e. g. gas pipelines, cables, trawl wires) or munitions can be determined.

Statistical data on reserves, production and exports of Russian oil are provided in the article. The author pays special attention to the expansion of opportunities of sea oil transportation by construction of new oil terminals in the North-West of the country and first of all the largest terminal in Murmansk. In his opinion, one of the main problems in this sphere is prevention of ecological accidents in the process of oil transportation through the Baltic sea ports.

The study of paleogeography of lakes is an actual and important direction in modern science. As part of the study of lakes in the North-West of the Karelian Isthmus, this analysis will establish the dynamics of salinity of objects, which will allow to reconstruct changes in the level of the Baltic Sea in the Holocene.

Holocene diatom biostratigraphy of the SW Gulf of Gdańsk, Southern Baltic Sea (part III)The palaeoenvironmental changes of the south-western part of the Gulf of Gdańsk during the last 8,000 years, with reference to the stages of the Baltic Sea, were reconstructed. Diatom analyses of two cores taken from the shallower and deeper parts of the basin enabled the conclusion to be drawn that the microflora studied developed in the three Baltic phases: Mastogloia, Littorina and Post-Littorina. Moreover, the so-called anthropogenic assemblage was observed in subbottom sediments of the study area.
